They didn't even used to get paid for playing for country...that time! even Kapil said in one interview that after the 1983 win they were in dressing room of lords and champagne 🍾 party was going on!! but Kapil and team thought that who is going to pay for the goddamn champagne!! they are being celebrated, India came together in 1983..it was remarkable but the team was unaware of it.. everything was so innocent and pure! they couldn't even think to party with a champagne after the world cup win! it was a big deal!! that era, India team had numerous constraints for selection board, world cup committees, teams etc etc!! still they played their game! Kapil won! India won! we should show immense amount of respect for yester year, greatest cricketers who have actually paved the way of Indian cricket, they made history unknowingly... nowadays, when people bash these senior, veterinary cricketers I feel upset, that we have got 0 respect for these legends? who has inspired million Indians to play and watch cricket!! Sunil Gavaskar changed so much from his playing days and he is such an amazing personality. He is very frank and gives a lot of credit to others and downplays his role which is how a gentleman should be. He is so always in front of you in the comm box , analysis’ etc that you tend to neglect the achievements that he made. He has mellowed like fine wine and though his animosity with Kapil during the 84-85 period are well documented , he has mostly forgotten it I guess.

Why bring negativity into a positive conversation? Gavaskar's contributions to Indian cricket is unsurpassed. It is true that he wasn't a great one day batsman until late in his career. I still remember the innings he played against Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and co in the Bangalore test. No wonder Wasim Akram is still in awe of him. He is the man who did the unthinkable to the greatest ever WI pace quartet. Even today, he would be one of my two openers in an all time test 11. Outside of the cricket field, he stood up against the hypocrisy and condescending attitude of the English and Australian cricket establishment. Indian cricket owes a lot to Sunny!
