A Sikh man is most recognizable by his turban. After going through the Amrit Ceremony of initiation, Sikh men are required to grow their hair long (called Kes). In the Sikh faith, the body is considered a precious and holy gift from God. Any change or alteration to the body is forbidden. The hair, being an extension of the body, is to be wrapped in a turban for men and a chiffon for women.
Many people from outside of the community are typically curious about a Sikh man's long hair under his turban. Creative producer Gurjeevaan Singh, 31, often has to deal with questions such as, "Is your hair long enough to touch the floor? How often do you wash your hair? Do you go to the bathroom with a headscarf?"
While the turban piques the most interest, the Sikh faith goes much deeper. The faith advocates for gender equality and a caste-free system. Its followers believe that all people are brothers and sisters who should love each other.
