- Last month, Jordan and Dan Darnell made the trek out to sunny southern Alberta to check out the last surviving Fairbanks-Morse/CLC H16-44 in Canada. In addition to getting some detail shots, we did a 3D scan to firm up some of the dimensions on our upcoming model. We go that extra mile here at Rapido! Actually, in this case, we went that extra 1,678 miles...

It's neat the way the 3d camera lights up the engine and plays music to entertain the humans while it works. 😁

The reason for the cement block in the short hood was that 8554 was originally equipped with a steam generator. When it was removed in 08-03-71, they had to add the block to replace the weight of the missing SGU.
Ingenious!
The throttle stand denotes that this engine is equipped with GE electrics, traction motors, generators , etc. If it had Westinghouse electrical gear, it would have a different control stand.
Amazed this example survived to this day.

Nice and interesting video. I have a pair of Virginian H16-44 locomotives reserved at a major retailer. I'm pleased to see that you are trying to make sure the models are accurate. I have four Atlas H24-66 models that they did years ago, and one big complaint is that the the radius of the hoods wrong (too round). The ancient Athearn version actually got that correct.
We're trying to make this the definitive H16-44 model!
I sure hope this model is also released in N scale. I'd love to see an N scale FM H16-44 in Pittsburgh & West Virginia Railway paint scheme (I know they only had 4 so chances are very slim) But just seeing one in N scale would be a start. Going by previous Rapido Trains releases, I know this model will blow the Bachmann version right out of the water. Cheers, Rich S.

Very cool video and glad to see you guys doing the more unusual locomotives! I will say, it was kind of depressing to see this locomotive in such rough and degrading condition, hopefully it will at least recieve a cosmetic restoration or even better, fully restored to operating condition!
She looks rougher than she is. Definitely savable!
That was some super cool scanning. Laser H16 with some Synthwave. Never knew the inside radiator area of an H16 looks like a cramped attic. Glad this still exists and looks great with the multimarks
Hopefully she'll be restored to her full multimark glory sooner than later!
Nice to see some of the last remaining fairbanks morse diesels receiving some much needed attention.

This unit was kept on the SAIT campus while I attended there. I had chance to walk through it although at the time, I didn't realize the history behind it. I remember when it was moved along with all that other equipment to the current location... probably one of the only times I actually went out to chase a train... Unfortunately, missed the move.. would have been quite the site.
Someone needs to save this Fairbanks Morse H16-44 today!

Can I suggest for all the Espee fans the Krauss-Maffeii ML4000C, of which one survives at the Niles Canyon Railway in Sunol, California? Nobody has made a model of it in plastic since AHM over 50 years ago, and that was the prototypes, which were carbody types, while the production models were roadswitcher types, of which one survives.
I really hope you guys got that BC rail rc car scanned too! :)

Really eager for this locomotive. I wish you guys did this unit. I really wish she could be restored and operable.
Been hearing rumors that this unit and the two C-liner B units have been scrapped. If it's true at least you guys were able to get the scanning from the H16-44, but it's definitely a big loss for Canadian railroad preservation in general.
I was just on your site, and I'm really happy that you're doing the two orange and black New Haven schemes.
We just couldn't choose between them!

Thanks for the update. Don’t know if I’ll get any because I have the Bowser ( from the Pennsylvania Scale Models molds) and the Bachman version. BTW did the CP unit have the OP diesel in it? Also what’s the status of those 2 B units? Would be cool to see those restored to running condition, but would require the money to acquire an OP engine and all the electrical gear. BTW FM is still in business building new OPs and they also own and produce Alco 251s.

is the Tie Vac suit for the asbestoses that might still be lingering?
The unit is stored on the grounds of a decommissioned sour gas plant which is undergoing remediation. While unlikely, as a precaution it was required to wear the suits in case of fire.

It's all surface rust. It's actually in remarkably good shape!
would it be possible to have a HO scale c-2-t 2-6-0 hk porter and a 1929 c class shay both like the ones from the hesston steam museum made?

We don't own it, but it will get the treatment it deserves.
Hopefully while there you scanned the Robot car too for a future project??
While not planned as a Rapido project, we did scan the roof curvature of the B units should it be needed at some point in the future.
