Our carpet isn't even that thick. Wouldn't budge. We returned ours back to Costco. Didn't spend $300 to have to jury-rig a brand new vacuum with zip ties. How did the Dyson engineers overlook something so blatantly obvious. They never tested on carpet?

Exactly. Unbelievable that they didn't catch it. I'm getting old, but not too old to push a vacuum. Costco should pull this item, I'm sure many were returned.

Great fix but that gap releases fine dust back into room bypassing the hepa filter benefits on the dyson.

This modification does NOT work on the Dyson Ball Animal 2 Origin. We bought this model from Costco to replace an old Dyson Ball Multi Floor that was on its last leg, and we immediately noticed the problem. The suction created would cause the vacuum to stick in place, and the brush head would stop rotating. I noticed that the base plates for the two models were exactly the same. So, I mutilated the rubber gasket on the sides of the old base plate, and of course that works, as the amount of suction is reduced. I am pretty frustrated that Dyson is allowed to continue to sell this product as is with no disclaimer whatsoever.

Good solution! Unfortunately the newer model won’t let you feed a zip tie through. Solid piece. Did fasten a spacer based on your solution here and it works! My wife is screaming from the other room how much she loves vacuuming again. 🤪

I was ready to throw my Dyson in the trash. Then I watched your U-Tube Video tried it and it works, can't thank you enough for showing me how to fix my problem.

That's great to know! we actually have almost the same problem on our hardwood floor with a low pile rug with one of those slip-proof pads underneath. The vacuum wants to suck straight to the floor through the rugs. it's not impossible to push but it's difficult for not-strong person to push.

This worked for me, my older dyson animal 2 stopped working on carpet it used to work on, cleaned everything out and still had the same problem. Never would have guessed too much suction. I threw a zip tie on haphazardly and got the brush to spin again most of the time

Great tip! I used a small 9" ziptie first, but it didn't create quite enough space (the carpet I have is super-overly-plushed). I used a larger 13" ziptie next and it worked great. Much obliged!

Thanks! I will try this. Dyson should have a variable suction control for how expensive they are.

When I tried that, removing the half ball that covers the filter, I tried to recline the stand. Two pieces of broken Dyson plastic ended up on the floor. My 5 year warranty expired 3 months ago, have probably made close to a dozen warranty repairs over the years. It's in my trash bin now, I can't wait to buy a Shark.
Dyson just earned a spot up there with Samsung, I'll never buy anything with that name on it again

Recently bought Dyson Ball Animal 2 - a bit different undercarriage design than yours here. More complicated to rig. I haven't figured out how to allow more air to reduce suction. My carpet is Standard pile, it's not extra plush by any means. When I tried the Animal 2 head on my original Ball Animal model, it works perfectly. And vice versa. So, the Animal 2 simply had Too Much Suction. I think they should have identified this as a problem, a Big problem, before putting it on the market. I think it should have come with an Adjustable cleaner head, so you can Manually raise and lower it to suit your carpet. As well, once the cleaner head hits the carpet it stop and will not re-engage once lifted off the carpet. The cleaner head engage button needs to be pushed off then on again, on a flat surface like tile or wood, for it to begin rotating again. Touches the carpet again, you find Super suction, takes a good amount of strength to push and pull the vacuum, and the head stops again. Great suction for flat floors, but Terrible design for all other use cases. I think I'll try and find another Original model Ball Animal. Or try a different company. By the way, I called Costco corporate, and they said they don't know of Any complaints on these Dyson models having too much suction and not working in Standard carpet. Ignorant of customer reviews or lying, you decide.

I have a problem with this vacuum bc to use the hose I have to wrestle with it to stop the suction long enough to get any vacuuming done on baseboards or whatnot. I'd like to know what I'm doing wrong...

  • @connie2560

I had the same problem with new/lush carpet. I watched several Dyson videos and this worked for me - To turn ON the machine, there is a purple button. There is also a GREY button which lessens the suction. So once I turned on the machine I pressed the GREY button. It didn't work the first time, but the second time it definitely decreased the suction and I could vacuum the new carpet. Hope this is helpful to someone. I felt the same way! How does it not provide some adjustment option for suction?! Very nicely done video, by the way, so clear and well filmed, and easy to understand.

I think this is ridiculous. I just out together ours we bought online today and I can't push it at all. I called Dyson and they wanted me to package it up, load it up, and take it to a UPS Store to send for repair. I said that's ridiculous and inconvenient for me. They're sending a new part and it's suppose to work and I said I'm not holding my breath and I wasn't spending $550 when this one was $400.
