Gas fired heaters were super common in air-cooled VWs. Probably also in Corvairs of the same era. Webasto and Eberspacher were two common names from companies that are still in business.
My brother had a gas heater in his VW up here in Canada. Without it the Beetle had great heat, but it would take 30 minutes to come up to temperature. The gas heat was instantaneous and had the car toasty warm in just a few minutes. And there weren't problems with fumes because it was plumbed like a house furnace with a heat exchanger.
It was standard in the Soviet Zaporoshetz as well. They needed some serious heat over there on the steppes, in case it broke down, again... :D
Diesel shop heaters are quite effective for cost vs performance but no way would I have a gas powered one in a moving vehicle. That just seems like an invitation to burn to death...
Every modern semi (or lorry for those across the pond) has a diesel-fired bunk heater for winter use. When maintained properly they're pretty safe. Then again this is an 80 year old car with a gas-fired heater so I'm not too optimistic with THAT setup
People that are still driving these cars, what solution are they using for colder times? Unless they are just putting them in a garage. I do know of two Corvairs local to me, but I know I don't see them much in the winter. I do know one of the two is still owned by the original owner.

Gas fired car heaters were more common than we realize in the 40’s and 50’s. They were a heat upgrade in VW Buses and other air cooled VW’s into the 70’s! It’s definitely got some value to someone restoring a car or for display purposes. Heck it’d be fun to get it working and okay with it in the shop!

Every time you show the Z8 I am reminded of my dad. He had one. He was also invited down to SC for the BMW driving experience. They gave a group of about 14 of us 8 Z8s to test the limits of the car. What a blast, they kept telling us over the radio “it’s not your car! Step on it!”
Been there done that, loved it. My partner no showed so I got twice the driving time as everyone else.
But they told me to be nicer to the tires...

Came around in the big sedan and asked the guy “are we still being encouraged to drive these aggressively?” He smiles and says yes we are. Next thing you know, I am slaloming the thing.

The ‘61 VW my dad drove back in the day had a gas heater made my Stewart Warner and installed by the VW dealer. It took up about half the frunk.
It got him through many MN winters.
Combustion heaters are still common in diesel vehicles. I have never seen a gas version before. Big rigs use them for sleeper cab heating in the winter, though these days an option is to use a standby diesel generator that provides electrical power to the cab, and waste heat to the engine, so that your truck engine doesn't need to run overnight in the frozen north. Combustion heaters are commonly available and cost little more than $100. Both options save huge amounts of diesel compared to idling the truck engine all night. There are even hydronic heaters which just heat the engine coolant. Fuel burn for these things for the models I checked is around 1 pint her hour on high output, compared to a gallon per hour for idling the diesel.

All you have to do is contact 1 or 2 of your area TV stations and their problem solving person will get involved and watch how fast they show up with the rest of your garage. Local media gets these types of grievances all the time. It's not news worthy enough for them. The only real options are Yelp and Google, but even there there is the stigma of being sued for a bad review.

Those fuel powered heaters are not uncommon here in Northern Europe and you can still get them on VW from factory. Works nice and heats up the frozen car very fast. Some also preheats the engine. Webasto is one brand.
That heater might be some kind of collectors item since Motorola has gone. They made a huge range of items, but in that era things were hand built in small numbers. Might be worth something to someone, or at least worth the cost of nostalgia.

Tyler, you were shocked by heaters being an option in 1946. In the late 60s, I had a 1961 Morris Minor as a student in the UK. If I remember right at that time you had to pay £40 extra for a heater to be fitted. And they were rubbish, I drove 300 miles once and the back window never defrosted!
You can get 6v to 12v converters to run that 12v heater fan which is a much better solution, then you can also use the 12v for modern accessories like a charger socket etc.
2 thoughts:
#1 - I think the car wizard should use a step-up transformer to power the new heater and use the included motor. A PC fan is a dinky solution.
#2 - I replaced the front brake rotors and pads on my S55 AMG with aftermarket parts that have worked perfectly for years. The entire kit was less than $200 so $3k for brakes sounds ridiculous.
Step up transformers work with AC. The electrical system in cars is DC.
There are solid state DC voltage converters. Maybe that would be a solution.

Imagine if other industries tried to function with the missed timing and promises you constantly see in construction... crazy they constantly get away doing this without repercussions
All industries have their lows and short comings.
Transport for example. Drivers mostly work out of brokers who give bare bottom prices and drives have to drive for pennies. Real estate has to deal with owners with a shack worth 50k, but they want 500k. If anything construction is simply cyclical. Like the winter months are a grind to a halt cycle. Everything slows down because of snow and muddy conditions.
The fact that you hold such a negative outlook on an industry from 1 TH-cam’s experience shows you’ve never owned or operated a business.
Just be thankful if they eventually show up and finish the job and don't run off with your money instead.
Kinda glad to see your do a 180 on the SLS. Probably one of the better looking modern Mercedes. Looks way better than the SLR in my opinion. I'd rather see ya sell off the cheaper stuff again, so that a little later on, you can rebuild that collection with other stuff. Just a revolving door or hoopties. But either way, do what ya gotta do to keep things moving in the right direction and stay stable.
My Dad has a 1946 Dodge pickup truck, and I think the factory heater for that truck is also fuel run. It's been a long time since I've looked at that part of the truck, but it sounds familiar. I really hope you can keep the AMG SLS, I think it's a phenomenal gorgeous car. If I had some money, I'd love to buy it, but I'd never be able to pay what it's worth.

That gas heater may have been a cold weather retrofit. Somewhere that the regular engine would struggle to come up to temperature. Even now, there are Webasto diesel heaters on school and transit buses in areas that see sub-freezing temperatures often.
You should sell the Ferrari and another 2 cheaper cars. The SLS will appreciate like crazy in the next 5-10 years.
And why are you expanding an already big house for only 2 people live?

My dad's 38 Studebaker had a South Wind gas heater, I still have a couple of them on a shelf in my shop.
The gas fired heater actually isnt too unusual. A lot of RVs use similar heaters, although most are run on diesel. But there are modern gas versions too. A small diesel heater can heat a very large space very efficiently. All the fumes are vented outside (it works like your natural gas furnace at home). You should absolutely have a carbon monoxide alarm though (just like at home).
One of the twin engine piston planes I fly (Beechcraft Duchess) has a combustion heater made by Janitrol for the cabin.
As they described how it works, I also said to myself, this is nothing new....maybe odd, but not unheard of; but so cool is "Motorola" ...Do keep it around with most of it's fitting for originality. But do let the Wizard do his tasteful adaptable solution.. Also Cool!

Semi trucks have them too, it's a good way to provide heating while you sleep in the cab without needing to have the engine running or draining battery.

It's honestly wiser to just not get married at all. Even with a prenup, they can still get around it and take everything from you, there are endless loopholes in all that legal BS that a decent lawyer will pull out. In the 40's heaters and radios were usually extra cost options. Ventilation systems were standard, windows and cosy wings.

Many vintage VW’s had optional gas fired furnaces. And they were mounted almost directly on top of the gas tank. Crazy.
My work Semi truck has a diesel fired furnace mounted directly below where I sleep. Coincidentally, it’s made by the modern company that made VW’s Gas furnaces back in the day.
An old Soviet Union car had a gas heater as well {1978) : ZAZ 968 , handy when you live in Siberia, according to
the dealer included a full bag of tools (55 lbs about 25 kg ) and ..5 wheels ( 4 wheels and 1 spare)

Gasoline heaters are still used in aircraft. Twin Cessna’s like the 414 and 421 use them since there isn’t s good way to get exhaust heat through the wings and into the cabin. Also, since they fly in the mid 20000 foot range the outside temp drops well below zero.
My mid-sixty Corvair had had an optional gasoline heater located in the "frunk" (front trunk). The basic engine-shroud heater was a carbon monoxide death sentence if there were exhaust leaks that got into the shrouding.
The heater is still very popular in Germany as remote start is forbitten and you use them to pre heat the car . It’s called „Standheizung“
And it can still be ordered new as a option on most Northern European brands like Mercedes Benz, BMW or (of course) Volvo.

The vw bugs in the 1960’s had gas heaters. When they were on your gas mileage was cut in half. They were a blessing on a really cold day up here in the great white north.
In Europe some people still use diesel heaters called Webasto especially on work vans because it uses way less fuel than the engine.
When i was in the army late 80's, our tracked vehicles all had similar heaters, only those ran on diesel, even if it is a old system, it is actually a very effective heater system.
I can understand Wizard being wary of it though, it is not a very common type of heater, but if well kept, it is safe and works like a charm.

I trust diesel waaay more than gasoline. I have a kerosine garage heater that works great...but I get a bit woozy using it. Guess Carbon Monoxide does that. Emergency use only! 😄
@@miketeeveedub5779 yeah those diesel heaters also had that effect (if they were dirty), but opening one of the hatches for a tiny fraction, pretty much solved that problem.
Diesel heaters are still common, ranging from $100-$2000 depending on whether they heat air or the engine coolant, and who made them. They exhaust outside, so the only time you get fumes is when they failed already, or you have an air leak allowing the fumes in.

In the 60's, I had a couple VW's that had gas heaters installed by the selling dealers. The service departments had strict rules that if a mechanic was working on one of those heaters and wanted to test it, the car HAD to be taken outside first. But they worked well, especially because of air cooled VW's not making much heat otherwise.
I wish you would have documented more of the garage slab going down and the process and the room expansion... would have been a great channel add... maybe do a second channel for vlogging/misc items that dont fit in Hoovie's Garage, do some behind the scenes of your Barret Jackson, and your house projects and stuff... like what Off the Ranch (Now re-named to just Matt's name).

A similar gas fired heater was/is used on a lot of piston powered aircraft stir flying today. I flew three different planes in the past that had gas heat. When they worked 😅they work great.
I used to work for a company that started its life making heaters for cars. I'm not sure of the date, but I think that heaters were optional into the late 50s. I know that you could buy your muscle car with a 'heater delete' option into the late 60s.

Gasoline heaters were commercially available on automobiles starting in the 1930s with continued use until the 1960s, when they were almost entirely replaced with heaters that blow air past a small radiator warmed by hot engine coolant.
on that fan motor for your heater you can do a step down converter supply module from 12 volts to 6 volts..they make them and it would blow air better than a computer fan motor and would be simple.

One of Bugs had a gas heater. Very toasty! There was no comparison between the stick heater channels off the air cooled engine. It was up front in the trunk area right next to the gas tank.
Don't be afraid of a gas heater in your car , they were pretty common in VW Type !! models back in the day. Heck I even had one in a Porsche 356 I had.
Why not convert the Woodie to 12 volt? It would only need new bulbs as the wiring will be ample.
VW bugs used a gas fired heater as an option over the standard hot blown air from the cylinders. I have diesel fired (factory original) engine/cab heaters on my Ranger and VW transporter.

Heaters WERE optional back in the day. I know my grandfather ordered his chevy (model and year unknown) without one when he came home from WW2. He lived in Florida.
I'm sure someone already mentioned it but Volkswagen used gas fired heaters and I don't know if lots of them burned up but I think eventually the powers that be decided it was dangerous to use but pretty sure other vehicles used them back in the day too. The one good thing is you could have instant heat as long as you had gas and power.
Combustion heaters are used on some light airplanes, like the Piper PA-44 Seminole. I used to instruct in these and NEVER turned that thing on, I was nervous about it catching fire.....

Keep it up bro! I'm in a bind from my '99 Toyota Solara needing every rubber piece, either mount or hose, valve cover gaskets, injectors, fuel filter (had to cut it out), erg sensor, 02 sensors, ect. And I got all that done but now I'm unemployed.
I'm a true "Renaissance Man" in the way I can fix almost anything I set my mind to and have the tools for, real Jack of All Trades type. Problem is people dont seem to like that, including bosses when you know as much as they do about most things, not all for sure. Mechanical Knowledge of all kinds is really strong, but ppl skills lack sometimes due to having little patience for laziness and ignorance. Anyway hope you make it through and if anyone in Ar/OK area needs any kind of handyman work or light mechanics hit me up! I'm 37 and not a kid just talking ish I'm 100% serious and trying to put myself out there to start something for myself.
The heater is very similar to a C&D aircraft heater it appears. May well have a ceramic liner. If so, these crack and most definitely result in CO leak. Whether enough it is enough to be sickening in a windy old car who knows. I would definitely put it on a shelf for preservation of you choose not to reinstall. A really cool antique.
That heater sounds very similar to a semi truck's Bunk Heater. It burns the trucks diesel to heat up the sleeper area in places where they dont let you idle (California.) It has its own exhaust under the cab and everything. They heat the sleeper extremely well.
Yes when dealing with contractors if you want it completed by a certain date confirm the contractor can meet the deadline and put "Time is of the Essence" in the control a completion date and penalty per day if Not completed

Gasoline heaters used to be around in my youth. CO isn't much of an issue with all the air leaks in the cabin. You might be able to still get them if J.C. Whitney or Warshawsky is still in business.
For fan speed control, if you're going to use PC fans, I suggest the biggest noctua 5v fans you can find and a pwm fan controller with a knob.

We only replaced the battery late last year in our 2012 F30 BMW 335i.

You can use a DC to DC converter to make 6vdc to 12vdc and keep the original blower motor
Gas heaters were common back then. Probably the last mass produced car with one was the 411 VW. Airplanes today use them as well. The nice thing about a big old car with a gas heater is you can park, with your date, and not have to run the engine for heat... ;-) I wouldn't be surprised to see that J.C. Whitney still sold them as many were aftermarket items.

Yep, I remember them as a VW option. Today, it's diesel heaters that replaced the gas heater. Van-lifers use them a lot (and EV owners that don't want to drain their batteries)...😎
They are still very common in northern parts of the world. Not only for preheating the engine and interior before you set of in the cold weather but also in some cases to help to warm the interior while driving, because the car cant produce enough heat to keep the interior warm. For example a small diesel engine, 80kmh in -25c does not want to warm up much, so it uses the external heater to help in the situation.
I remember the GM corsair having a gas heater and when it was being used you could see the gas gauge drop

Hoovie my VW 412 1973 wagon had a gas heater, It was scary to me back then as well, BTW the car required leaded Premium gas, or it would not run! But i remember it was fun to drive but it ate brakes like crazy!

Janitrol made auxiliary heaters powered by gasoline for the air-cooled VWs of yore. Scarier still, many light aircraft are heated by burning 100 low-lead in an open flame box in a Janitrol heater. You might think a fire on a boat is bad, wait until your airplane is on fire! Glad you are keeping the SLS!
