- Talk’s Kevin O’Sullivan and royal commentator Kinsey Schofield discuss the controversy surrounding Prince Harry being honoured with the Pat Tillman award.
The Duke of Sussex is set to collect his award on Thursday, being honoured for his service and using his platform to “change the world” at this year’s ESPY awards in the US.
The Pat Tillman Award for Service is named after former NFL player and US Army Ranger Pat Tillman, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2004.
The mother of Pat Tillman is unhappy with ESPN’s decision to give the award that bears her son’s name to Prince Harry, a “controversial and divisive figure”.
A former Royal Navy chief has urged the Prince to turn the award down and said it doesn’t sit well with people in the military.

Vet here. My Dad earned several purple heats in Korea/Vietnam. According to harry, the only time he saw injured soldiers was on the flight home. Because he was nowhere near the front. My dad earned his last purple heart getting shot down in Vietnam in a chopper. I find this insulting. Give the award to a US purple heart Vet who did something special.

I have read, in several places, that he also failed his air gunner test twice, so that's a negative, too. The PR at the time called him a "forward air controller". I'm beginning to think, "yeah, on his playstation - maybe." I don't think Xbox even existed during the period that he was in Afghanistan.

It was all PR because public support for the war was waining here in the uk. The spare was just a poster boy. Back then we didn't have the technology we have now to check what these media ghouls say.
During an attack on camp bastion that the spare slept through, two American Marines were killed defending him their names were Ltn Christopher Raible and Sgt Bradley Atwell, a dozen uk soldiers were also wounded. At no point has the spare mentioned the brave men who died because he was playing soldier in Afghanistan.
The attack was on his birthday and he was the target.
