@@user-uh5im5vd9o Being a taxi driver is a very rare position and only held by the upper 0.00000000000001% of the population. I agree, no way his father could have possibly been a cab driver.
He must be 100
@@StryderFi I’ll entertain this since I’m a little bored at work. Even if I may be typing to a chat bot but whatever.
In NYC anyone can be a cabbie. You do need a livery license to operate a yellow cab. Medallions on the other hand are limited. The city issues a certain number of medallions to particular vehicles. Before Uber and Lyft medallions cost went up to almost $1 mil, now you can get them for a little over $100k. The livery driver rents the cab form the medallion owner.
"babe stop, youre not a 70s film noir detective, stop speaking in metaphors and see a therapist!"
"I stared back at her with a gaze as cold as the night outside, clawing at the heat from our apartment like a greedy rat, living from day to day"
"what the fuck are you talking about?!"
Man I wish I was a 70 noir detective discovering a huge conspiracy by the local town government.
"I had felt as though I am a prime example of the cassandra complex. Really makes ya think, about the pain of knowing, the pain of dealing with ignorance. It gave me purpose, a sense of self-inflected responsibility"
"you forgot to take your pills babe"
Brilliant 😁
Real
It needs more energy and more power!
Like throw a goddamm bowl of half-eaten cereal at the wall for punctuation.😂
I drove a cab in the 80s to put myself through college. Out for 12-26 hours. Insane the things I saw. Changed me. Made me quit drinking, become a writer.
As an Uber driver6 years, I can relate 🙏🏽
did you ever kill a man
Likewise, early 80s in KCMO and was just thinking about all the crazy things that happened. So many stories that most would not believe
@@chriss314 did you ever do a hit and run
So you were driving around for 26 hours while drunk? The 80s was wild man 😂

maybe scary... ;-)
Travis Bickle in 2023: "You know, it's somethin' else, lookin' out at this city now. Back in the day, in the gritty streets of the '70s, this place had a pulse, a rhythm. You could feel the tension in the air, like a coiled spring just waitin' to snap.
I used to cruise these same streets, my taxi's wheels rollin' over the asphalt, takin' me to places where the neon lights flickered like promises. People, they had this edge to 'em, a rawness that told you they were fightin' to survive. It was a city of contradictions, beauty and decay intertwined in a dance that played out every night.
Now, though, it's like a different world. The pulse, it's faded. The neon's still there, but it ain't got that same fire. Everyone's starin' at screens, lost in their own little digital worlds. The streets are cleaner, but they've lost their soul. People don't talk no more, they just text and swipe, too afraid to look each other in the eye.
The city's lost its character, its authenticity. It's become sanitized, homogenized. The filth and the grime, it's been replaced by sterile buildings and gentrified neighborhoods. It's like they've taken a scrub brush to the soul of this place, tryin' to polish it up, make it presentable for the suits and the tourists.
But you know, deep down, I can't help but think maybe I'm just seein' it through my own messed-up lens. Maybe the city's always been changin', evolvin'. Maybe this is just the way of things. Hell, maybe I'm the one who's stuck in the past, clingin' to a version of reality that was never gonna last.
But one thing's for sure, in this sea of change, one thing remains the same - the loneliness. That ain't never gonna change. No matter how many fancy gadgets they come up with, no matter how many shiny buildings they erect, people are still gonna be searchin' for a connection, for somethin' real.
As for me, I'll keep drivin' these streets, watchin' as the world keeps spinnin' and changin'. Maybe one day, I'll find my own place in this new reality, a way to connect, to make some sense of it all. Until then, I'll just keep rollin', a lone sentinel in the night, tryin' to find my own path in this ever-shifting landscape.
The grunge is still there. It's just been run outdoors to sleep now. Drove through NYC a few years back. In an old fullsize Mercury, navigating with a paper map. Chinatown, Manhattan, Queens... I've never seen anything like that city. You wonder how the hell people can live there but at the same time it feels kind of like you kind of want to stay and see what happens.

@@GrandMerc89 NYC has this unmistakable feeling about it for those who have been there and seen it. Not just the tourist areas, but the areas beyond those. Its still the same dirty, tense and soulful city it was, just gotta know where to look. Same with any major city in the US anymore. The more things change, the more they stay the same and all that.
@@Stargazzer811 For sure. My paper map led me through it well, got to see a great mix of everything walking and driving. Was limited to a few hours in one day but I probably could have driven another day just looking at stuff. I like older industrial areas of cities and railroad infrastructure. Long Island RR was like a trip back in time.

I'm a cabbie. ❤. Yes, it sometimes gets like this. Lol. I play Blade Runner Blues when it gets like this.
Wasn't interested in jazz at all when I was young, now I can't get enough of it
As a kid that grew up in Manhattan in the 70's/80's, it's just as trashy, grimy and disgusting as I remember! NYC has come a long way.
I've played LA Noir previously and watched this movie in my late teens. This is the playlist I've been looking for a long time. Obviously, hit right in the feels. Takes me back to when times we're a lot simpler. To all the doomers out there, no matter how permanent your " doom " is, may you get out of your rut and live life again . Cheers!!.
Same there👍

The winds from the Hudson blew like smoke through my apartment window as I thought about a night sky dark and ominous. There was a fever in the night so hot it hurt my eyelashes or maybe it was the heat of the camel tip hanging from my lip. I took another drag and tossed it into the flooded ashtray that told the tale of hours just watching and waiting for a knock on the door. The double bourbon made it easier to wait, but the wanting never ceased the hunger for action. The door clicked and my eyes flicked up. She swung the door open and all I could see were legs that stretched from here to Long Island. Her red lips parted slightly, but she didn't say a word just stood there in the hot silence. The action was in her eyes and the fever was in my blood. The winds blew again and the street sounds broke the silence. That's when I saw the gun in her hand...
exactly!

Not a single cell phone, no gps or computers and we were doing juuuuust fine. Like this fine mood-making midnight Jazz allows our imaginations to be truly free and all without 0’s and 1”s.
We need this today.
Yep, but them rich folks sat phones (early 80s) would bleed thru our radios. Mostly guys saying "I'll be home in 20 mins". Used to think 'what a dork' but now that is EVERYONE... lmao
Had a boombox in the cab.
When I made my green light record (36 greens in row -Westport to Downtown Hyatt)

its been a while since i took some time off. i dont even remember when was the last time i laid my head down on a soft pillow. my bed has become my friend i never get to see. this rainy and cold weather withers away my skin cells depleting me of every moment of every second. Each breath is as lucky as the last. i guess i could have another beer. its too much, its as if im holding two boulders over my shoulder. to be thinking about this again....come on.....you know things dont change. people dont change. as i take another sip of my ice cold beverage, i cant seem to stop staring out into the abyss. all i see is my reflection
Beautiful.

It’s not often that we actually get to live the life that we want right now, and that’s alright. I want everybody reading this to know y’all will achieve your highest of dreams.
Don’t forget that it’s normal to escape. I reward myself by listening to this without any distractions whatsoever. It takes me back to a time when the world was perfect. A time when the skies were actually blue, the grass was green, and the people around your were an absolute blast and joy to be around. A time where we didn’t want to be separated from our friends. A time where there are no ill-intentions from those around you. We misjudge how blessed we were as kids. Thank you for this wonderful playlist.

The looped video of late nite old NYC cityscape during the summer, whilst having this ominous jazz soundtrack playing is mesmerizing. Brings back memories of childhood in the early 80s., which apparently the 2 decades have frozen in time and look exactly alike.

I never ever saw 1 mohawk in the ENTIRE 1970s. So seeing taxi driver - that was the first mohawk that most people had ever ever seen anywhere, anytime. It was years later that such a style would appear in real life in America.

Denver was my home when I drove for Yellow Cab and Metro Taxi sporadically during the 80s and 90s. So many stories, so much life, at times raw, other times, grace-filled. Though I preferred the late nights and early mornings, the heartbeat of the city never stopped. For me, as a single man, it was a decent living. The long hours could easily be broken by as much freedom as I required to live my life on purpose.
I wrote half a chapter thanks to this playlist! Also congrats for the editing, you chose scenes that blend well with each other and the repetition isn't obvious! Also the doomer Travis brings in mind the glorious days of TH-cam Poop fan videos!!
