Yeah it's sad. I'm surprised people think he is cocky. Sometimes I feel like Kuroko whether on purpose or by chance helped Aomine. By raising Kagami to a high level he created a new competition for him someone who could make Aomine feel that sense of fire in him again.

Aomine is my Favorite out of the members of Generation of Miracles. I love the reason why he suddenly stop smiling when playing basketball, and how he cried when Touo Academy lost against Seirin and how he's cool conceited yet caring and sweet attitude. And I literally cried when kuroko said, when I saw him crying
Kagami is not my favorite, but I respect him for caring so much about his shadow that he couldn't take seeing Kuroko crying in defeat---which Aomine failed to do. Now, Aomine must be feeling so much regret for abandoning the shadow he once had (which is evident when he cried during Rakuzan arc), and the very shadow who could bring him to the true Zone. Nonetheless, Aomine is still one of my favorites.
His words sounded so confident. So arrogant. I'd want to smack him and tell him he sounds like an idiot. But that isn't the face of someone that revels in power and looks down on people. That's the face of a broken man, a god damn plea for help. Everytime I rewatch these moments, I wonder like kagami did. If I were tetsu, could I've done anything to save them? Could I have stopped all of this? Was it better to never had played with teiko? And every time I agree with him that it might not have mattered and that I just wanna punch away this darkness. I was so happy when kuroko was able to find a way to help his old friends in the end. May they play the sport they love for as long as time allows.

It is proven he is the strongest of his age, and he knows that. 2 entire years of winning and no losses, obviously he would have lost his drive and motivation. He deliberately skips practise so that others can catch up, so he can find a rival to play against, and finally find joy in his favorite sport.
