Very well done and well informed video! I must admit after watching it that my initial post about Urbanspook did feel quite harsh in hindsight. I wasn't exactly trying to do some major "call to action" against his series or rally my community against him, I was moreso just trying to express my confusion as to why a series with such distasteful and poorly handled elements such as CSA was given such high praise despite there being so little there of substance besides it. If I could go back and rewrite that tweet, I would probably do so in a way that expresses that better and makes it feel less like I was trying to weaponize my audience against a smaller creator. I will take responsibility for that and admit that was very immature of me. I can have my opinions about the guy and BELIEVE ME I DO, but I can keep those opinions to myself or at least present them in a more respectful way in the future. Thank you for making this video, I feel like this kind of stuff absolutely needs to be talked about so that everyone can learn from it.
Trust me, dude, your comment was still pretty tame compared to the way UrbanSlug reacted. He basically shot himself in the foot the moment he decided to throw out ableist insults (as someone who’s actually on the spectrum, shit like that really gets under my skin).
repeating what I said in the premiere: how did the police not think to search any arts or crafts stores in the area for security footage containing the suspects? you're telling me that this sleepy suburban town DOESN'T have a michael's at the very least??? where are they getting the paint, canvases, and brushes from?!
well the killer doesn't even live anywhere normally, the depctions of him show he's clearly homeless, so its more likely he just has them from childhood or found them on the premise's.
You missed out on the best part of the twitter response. Chezzkids, who is one of the most positive and cool Analog/Digital Horror creators, broke character just to say "go fuck yourself honestly" to Urbanslug
Hello! Male child SA survivor here, just thought I'd give my 2 cents. My history of frequent assault started when I was 9, ending when I was 17. That's nearly a decade of experience being on the receiving end of the type of treatment that UrbanSlug wants to label as "extreme horror" in his attempt to justify his blatant exploitation of seriously dark, life ruining events in other peoples' lives. He handled the topic with the respect, tact and sincerity of a brick to the face. What he simply does not understand about CSA is that the horror of it is not simply the act itself, and any homicidal act that may or may not follow. The true horror of CSA is the after effects - the constant nightmares, the constant fear and anxiety, the irreparable harm done to a child's psyche. I could go into great depths explaining various scenarios I was pushed into, how I felt and how it's permanently scarred me. But unfortunately I think that all that will achieve is giving people like UrbanSlug something new to put on a tshirt, or a new scenario to exploit to try to legitimize their paper-thin excuse for a plot. I fully believe that the subject of CSA can be approached properly. As it has successfully been done before by games like Silent Hill 2, where it was approached with subtlety and sincerity. I believe it can also be successfully approached in a manner similar to how the movie Come and See handled the subject of war - as a harrowing glimpse into the harsh reality of something that people don't really want to think about. I believe there are creators out there who can shed light on the topic in a meaningful way, regardless of how they choose to approach it. But definitely not someone like UrbanSlug, who sees it as a very edgy thing to throw at people just to shock them as much as possible.
I gurantee you dont call out other things that harm others lmao, its only because you have gone through it do you realise how bad this thing is, but that doesnt mean people cant create horror works like this because this one thing is something thats traumatic for you, if you are not able to watch these videos then dont watch them lmao? nobody forcing you to watch, theres warnings like the hypocrisy you have no idea you are doing because its based upon feelings that are valid but we cant always act on feelings despite what they may be, its so goddam hard to do and for something of trauma to that level I dont know but you cant dictate art based upon personal experience because thats all it is, traumatic feelings that will have biases and to go back on these and be open to maybe tohers can enjoyn these just as easily as me avoiding these, the sa ect is in no way shown in a good way as well, its shocking for those who like this shock value
"Stop calling my work nothing but shock value! In other news, today's video will be about 28 blenders, 13 orphanages, a woman's shelter, and a homeless guy i fed rusty gears to!"
i think a digital horror/analog horror that depicts abuse in a tasteful way is lacey's flash games. like it's about a girl who went through abuse from her uncle, but its not just for the sake of an edgy story, its to show the effects of the abuse and how lacey has dealt with it in an unhealthy manner. it's perfect and also terrifying in the imagery, much better than urbanspook (although the memes are hilarious)
YESS lacey's flash games!! it's probably one of my favorite horror series right now just for its style and execution! i think that the themes of escapism and trauma and how they relate to the co-creator of lacey are done in a really interesting way. i'm really hopeful that lacey's flash games will become a pioneer for more "girlhood nostalgia" inspired horror. even though i (and also the creator) aren't women, i personally have always resonated more with it since for the entirety of my childhood, i was raised as a girl. so lacey's flash games was an awesome thing to come across, especially since it's being done by a nonbinary creator around my age! i think it's so cool and i'm excited for the future of digital horror.
@magpie689 It's so fucking good too, and it critiquing the dehumanization victims of serial killers experience by directly making the audience look at how this fake killer does and how the show continues to do it even when presented with real humanizing information. Urbanspooks wishes he could be as good at analog horror as ghosttundra is.
@@funnyfish0526 Are you joking? It's very much horror and horror has a long history of being used to critique things in modern day society. Bug murders is using horror to critique how society dehumanizes victims of serial killers, so yes its very much horror.
I’m in the camp that you CAN depict darker concepts such as SA and shit, but it has to be done TASTEFULLY. The original version of Lolita is written to show you how MANIPULATIVE and EVIL Humbert Humbert is, not to sexualize his child victim. The movie remakes completely miss this and I think the original author disapproves of them greatly. You can do so much with such dark topics. You can show through abstract art or cutaways the mental anguish or how it feels like WITHOUT being exploitative, without making it basically shock or fictional snuff. Another reason why Urbanspook is lazy-there’s not even emotional investment he just goes “HEY LOOK AT THESE DEAD BABIES AND R*PED CHILDREN” Urbanspook is a lesson on everything you SHOULDN’T do. Just in general.
yeah this is my opinion exactly. If you are going to depict realistically ANY dark subject matter, even just death, then you HAVE TO do so tastefully or at least with some care. To just toss in CSA and treat it almost like it’s a joke is disgusting and it’s the reason Urban should have no place in the analog horror community, or any community for that matter.
There should be no should when it comes to horror unless you're referring to TOS and legality. Ijs, you might dislike something but it doesn't discount the overall creation.
@@VinnyVenom dude, it's fiction. People have the right to not like it and state their opinions on it. It's basic criticism, it happens to all media. Also nobody thinks that this stuff doesn't happen irl, but that doesn't matter because we're talking about fiction, right? Ok but seriously, your reaction to something harmless that people have been doing in response towards media is like, really weird and dramatic
Thing about spook is he cant write for shit. The two killers are basically horror marry sues that are so violent and so much smarter than the pilice that they could kill in front of them and theyd still be clueless as to who did it.
The killers even have the stupid HyPerRealIStic ScARy faCEs AhhHhhHH, these feels like a 2012 creepypasta made to be edgy with no style or substance which were most of the creepy pastas at that time.
One of my favorite things about Mandela Catalogue is that the creator takes criticism well and can make fun of himself, so much so that I think he made a video parodying his own series joking about how its a tad lazy
Yeah, as much as I don't enjoy that series and don't find it at all scary I do respect the fact that the creator is putting legitimate effort into learning how to make it more filmic and ambitious than its earlier parts, whilst also reinterpreting the rather crude photo manipulation into something that actually works as a fully animated monster that looks like it could tangibly exist within the setting.
I think a good example of CA being used tastefully in analog horror is in Children Under the House by Vintage Eight. The way they depicted fucked up things happening to kids was way better than the nonsense urbanspook pulled.
It's because the children were depicted as people and victims- not just dead bodies or people to further the plot. One of the biggest faults in UrbanSPOOK's content is his inability to humanize the victims or make us empathize with them. we just see them as dead bodies and nothing else. The children under the house was about the kids, it was about the horrors of CA/Trafficking and how it takes it's toll on it's victims. The painter is just about scary faces.
Eh. Not really. There wasn't that much difference. The phrasing is slightly different but in the end it's also just "look this kid was abused and oh now it's also evil and wants to kill another child" Because that's original. And makes sense.
Children Under the House is definitely better in terms of depicting violence on children compared to anything that SPOOK tried to do, but that's assuming SPOOK actually tried to do anything storywise
@toolatetothestory The painter doesn't even remotely have a plot like we are NO WHERE close to the killer actaully getting caught it's so boring like yeah somebody died but nothing even happened??? Atlesdt CUTH had a plot or story in the painter people just die and nothing even happens
Aside from the obvious stuff like Cory and Urbanslug's sensitivity to criticism, there were a few things that always baffled me about UrbanSPOOK: 1: The Killer had wildly varying methods to murder. The thing with IRL Serial Killers was that they had this one hyper-specific method of killing their victims. No real coherence with The Painter with their increasingly unrealistic methods of murder. But the Pig's Eyes? The "Meat" Brick? The WAX MOUND!? They don't feel like they were done by the same person, with wildly varying skill levels to what they would need to accomplish them. If it weren't for the paintings, the Police wouldn't have thought it was connected. 2: Not a single of his 30+ victims fought back at all. 3: Apparently, judging by the phone number in FACES, UrbanSPOOK takes place in a Southern State. Specifically in New Orleans, Mississippi. How come there's no angry mob with Pa's scattergun already hunting for his head? Much less the police being a lot less trigger happy than normal, so surely the neighborhood would've taken notice and became a lot more cautious, armed and hostile with a killer running loose. Edit: New Orleans is actually in Louisiana, mb. Point still stands though bout the guns.
because at this point the killer is a power/fetish fantasy for the guy to get all his gore needs out rather than actually write something believable and good. these are some of the most basic things you'd think of when trying to write a killer which really does show just how much he actually cares for the """story""" and delivering a narrative
literally this series needs people to not behave like people for it to work you mean to tell me the PI's neighbours heard a dog barking for hours on end and decided to just ignore it instead of investigating or calling the police, when a violent killer ran loose in the area and was openly showing their cruelty
Yes! Thank you! Someone else also noticed the lack of guns in this series! How have the painters not gotten their asses shot in a country with some of the loosest gun control laws?? Also, I understand police can be incompetent at times, but the police aren’t incompetent here, they are apparently comatose!!
Realistically people would fight back unless the killer is obviously bigger but even then and their would be a big mob protesting everywhere and especially police places
The thing with UrbanSPOOK is that things just happen. There’s no rhyme or reason, it’s just horrific stuff being described in excessive detail. If you want over-the-top spills, check out something like the original Whack Your Boss games or Happy Tree Friends, if you want good analog horror, there’s so many other options.
@@heihogreenzx4704urban spook is the only analog horror that’s actually made me scared (and sick to my stomach), but that was before i knew how weird this dude was. what are genuinely scary analogs?
@@Mreow33 I mean, personally, I’m not an easily scared person, and horror is subjective, but I would say an example that did unsettle me was Gemini Home Entertainment’s “Home Invasion Help”. I highly recommend watching it for yourself.
My whole problem with him is the fact that he not only used CSA for shock value, but literally sold merch with a painting that depicts a 11 year old being mutilated.
my 3 problems are the cory merch the mr hands death and the cat's death this Is something that should not be depicted in horror at all if it has no excuse!
What is CSA..? Due to the fact that Cory is based on a real person, I'd be surprised if there isn't a victim based on Pastra by the series end seeing how much they pissed Slug off
Tl:dr Pastra rightfully said UrbanSpook’s analogue horror content was bad and in response he insulted him with words like autistic furry horror, which is weird but that’s the gist, idk what Cory Beck did to him.
@@spinosaurusstrikerhave you not seen the videos?? A kid named Cory in the series literally got fucking raped and mutilated. Most of the paintings are sex-related. Why do you think that urban is being targeted??
Even as a marketing ploy, who would want paintings which are meant to depict horrible murders, a few having gross sexual connotation. Despite how good the paintings are, given what they are meant to present are not something I would want to spend money on to own physical.
After looking into it a bit myself, UrbanSlug only planned for one episode. So the fact that it has continued, it feels super rushed and just a way to share his art through shock value.
@@ItsRaspbearyThe thing is he _loves_ drawing weird and creepy faces, and I get that. It's not all he draws but it is a good chunk of his catalogue. It also makes me wonder if any of the drawings he made were planned to be in an analog horror thing.
I’m a multi time CSA and COCSA victim and have survived to become an advocate for others and discuss presentation of sexual trauma in the media. I do believe it can be done; it just has to be done respectfully. It’s blatantly apparent to me UrbanSPOOK does not respect victims of that kind of trauma, otherwise he wouldn’t have handled the subject the way he did. For that, I think he’s gross.
yeah, same here. I think horror is a good medium to explore the effect of CSA on a victim because of how much it affects us. with there was stuff that did it well.
The story of a serial killer whose painting reflected their murders that depicted in a graphic detail is an interesting concept and the videos themselves are impressive, but UrbanSpook focused more on too much shock value rather than focusing on the story and the lore. Horror really needs some balance, but if the controversial death of Glen from _The Walking Dead_ has taught me anything, this is a reminder what happens when shock value ironically loses its value.
@@Topaz_the_clown1987I think it is impressive how much of an emotional reaction the videos get from me despite just being a slideshow. I still think it needs to focus more on the story and less on shock value though.
My favorite memory of UrbanSPOOK is that one Wendigoon stream where, after sitting through several episodes and being incredibly bored and incredibly uncomfortable, he gets to the part about the lady who got Mr. Hands-ed, and decided he had seen enough.
if urbanspook is a social commentary on people's craving for morbid content and disturbing stories, he just might be the best performance artist in the world. except probably not. he's not that smart.
You could have explained it that way until his cringe responses on twitter. Definitely shows that he's just trying to make shocking horror for sake of it being shocking
@@User-b9q2z I don't even think it's for being shocking, I think he just really likes this stuff. Like REALLY writing about this stuff, whilst imagining what's happening as he's painting it.
i think my main issue with the series besides him being lets be real an asshole is that the case never progresses. every breadcrumb is made void the very next episode and it just feels like he goes through a series of horrific deaths every single episode without any bit of plot progression it gets super boring
These two things are my issues with it as well! I tried to watch one of the videos and I'm just baffled at how people find it interesting. It's slideshows with sound and text like... Y'all do realize there's way more interesting horror out there in the same horror genre as this even right? Like I'm not gonna judge people for liking horror that has gruesomeness as a key feature, Saw is kinda popular and I enjoy it myself honestly. But part of what makes that fun is also being well written? This isn't well written or well executed at all, major snore fest.
Wait hang on... his response saying "focus on things you like" was directed at PASTRA?? The guy who almost always does that? Literally like 95% of his stuff is highlighting either things that are his favourites or underrated stuff!
Omg I thought I was the only one who had an idea that UrbanSpook could’ve been a social commentary about cops. But it’s impossible to get invested because there’s literally no story or characters to root for.
NGL, I think he might pull THIS point out of his ass at the last episode or something after he realises (if he does that is) that his story could be sumarised in one sentence.
So it became Saw? Think about it: both has a strong start with an innovative plot and eerie visuals. Both also became so over-the-top that they border on comical.
I’ve been waiting for more people to cover UrbanSpook’s sudden decline. The series had a decent premise but the sudden usage of shock horror was just a no go for me.
nah the painter series had it pretty graphic before even the horse bit, the whole cory wasn't that far in at all its not really sudden, the series builds up on the killers brutality with each episode. @@AwolCommander
The best part of this whole drama was the chezkids archive breaking character to specifically tell him to go fuck himself and I think that’s beautiful. 😂
What gets me about this series is that somehow two crack head looking guys are capable of outlandish feats of strength and can rip people apart with their bare hands and overpower several people, including Several police officers
@@jasonravenscroft5321”I love how this series is realistic and not supernatural” is a dumb take when you consider how unrealistic this series is it’s obvious Urbanslug just wanted a cool self insert character. Whole “story” (there’s a lack of) reads like a bad 2010’s creepy pasta. also the sheer amount of victims is stupid in of itself combined with the fact that they’re all killed like an episode of Looney Tunes
I think urbanspook could have been a lot more interesting if it was more about investigating and finding the killer rather than just gushing over corpses.Or maybe they could have gave the victims and investigators personalities so you would fell bad when they were killed.Or they could have went into details about the investigators mental state or the motives of the killer instead of just "I like murdering people lmao".Any of these would have made urbanspook significantly more interesting then it turned out to be.
I suggested before that they should make a video or anything peering into how the town is reacting How the police is reacting If detectives are being killed are detectives leaving? Are they coming into work at all? What does the mayor or the government have to say? You can focus on one thing in a world but ignoring the affects of that situation makes the world seem boring as it makes it seem it only runs off what is happening to the story and the story never seems to be affected by its actions.
Yep - if he'd REALLY worked on or thought out the lore at ALL, if he'd done some world building and given the victims identities, put some thought into WHY each victim is killed in the way that they are more than just edgy murderer bullshit, then even without changing a single detail about the deaths, it could have been much better recieved.
It’s kinda funny of slug telling Pastra to focus things he likes. Because that’s what Pastra does most of the time. Talk about things he likes, but he can be critical too. And I do agree, all the paintings are very impressive, the context and story behind them is just…ehhh… honestly The Painter kind of reminds me of an old Tales From The Crypt episode I saw it once with a similar plot. But at least there was a story behind that one.
Pastra was willing to defend SECURITY BREACH, a game that was pilloried in the FnaF sphere for not actually being a horror game... And UrbanSlug thinks Pastra's the type of youtuber that gets *too critical of everything?* I mean it with love, but Slug buddy, that is Phil/Phisnom, not Pastra The only things Pastra gets negative about is Hello Neighbor, Critters 4, and the first Critters netflix show. And maybe his much older content if his reaction to his constant talking and his JarJar impression are anything to go by, lmao
Sorry, but telling Pastra that his aesthetic is "little autistic furry horror" and calling everyone who disagrees cunts kills any interest from me, even if I do find the art and premise good. Why are we still using "autistic" as an insult in 2023? Is UrbanSPOOK in middle school? That would explain why he doesn't feel the need to justify the shock value in his series.
the fact that he uses "furry" too roots in the theory that UrbanSpook is just not as mature as he believes. he's the pinnacle of edgy dudes who find gore and nsfw entertaining or funny and turn around at anyone who disagrees with him.
Maybe he just feels like people are too harsh to him? Internet is a massive place, and seeing people not liking your artwork or whatever you make, insulting it and calling it weird and fetishistic would make person feel bad and angry. It's like getting bullied by entire school, you would get angry and sad. People can act ammature and say things they do not mean when they are angry, i can tell from the experience. I just feel like Spook probably didn't mean what he said, and that people shouldn't use his words as a fuel for the drama fire. We don't even know what kind of person he is and how he feels. All i am saying is that in a quarrel all sides are to blame.
@@CoalEater_ElliYou cannot tell me that he isn’t putting some of his fucked up fetishes into, especially with Cory being a literal child who was very much hinted at to be r*ped before being murdered. Not to mention the PIGS video.
That's the Pickman from Fallout. The short story was just that he was painting horrible ghouls and the narrator finds out he uses real monsters and isn't just making stuff up.
The fact that he refers to his videos as "extreme horror" is hilarious He's going to freak out when he discovers stuff like Fear and Hunger and Oyasumi Punpun, especially since they have some sense of plot structure and meaning
it's so funny that he just accuses everyone who doesn't like his stuff of not being able to handle extreme horror...i'm the closest thing you can get to a born and raised horror fan. i'm literally a fan of lisa the painful, for gods sake.
Admittedly, the sexual stuff in Fear and Hunger is still pretty gratuitous. It doesn't need to be there at all. But yeah, Fear and Hunger does DEFINITELY beat out Urbanspook for at least having an interesting story with well-developed characters.
After Urban insulted Pastra on twitter, most very popular analog horror creators (Martin & Alexx) started to defend pastra, that means urban really FUCKED up
I was just about to mention that. Pastra is such a polite and fair horror critic, so it's not like Pastra's hating on this for the sake of being different. His criticisms are accurate and honest constructive, and he said so in a civil manner. Pastra is like the least problematic horror reviewer out there, in a wholesome sort of way. UrbanSpook completely had a meltdown over this criticism. He even pulled out "Furry" and "Autistic" as an insult. Just because Pastra has a genuine interest in FNAF and mascot horror. What a jerk.
@@LazyBedhead Like- its ridiculous how urban started sobbing and throwing a fit over an opinion that is indeed valid, i dont like the series and that is totally fine, idgaf if he ever starts insulting me too, that just shows how weak he is over criticism which is very much needed to improve something in your life
Despite the tasteless subject matter, Urbanspook wouldn't have gotten all of this negative feedback if they didn't decide to have a meltdown on Twitter at the lightest criticism. Although the series isnt quite what I call explicit (at least in terms of visuals) utilizing CSA and over-the-top grotesque descriptions is a sure fire to alienate your audience. Especially if every new video is more or less the same thing over and over again with little story progression.
Also, making merch of the 'fucktoy Cory' painting is just plain ridiculous. Can you imagine wearing a shirt with THAT on it, someone asks you what it is and your like "oh, it's a shirt representing a child that got sexually mutilated In my fav analogy horror series :)" lol
I'm a person who writes/reads a lot of Dead Dove: Do Not Eat content. And UrbanSpook... isn't, that. The whole thing about DD/DNE is that *you get WARNED.* Everything about the content gets tagged, it is exactly what it says it is, and you can very easily avoid it if it's not something that you like. The transparency is a really big part of it so you're genuinely ALLOWED to say "read at your own risk" or "don't like don't read". UrbanSpook relies upon shock horror and therefore can't DO that. Not only that, but "don't like it, don't watch" doesn't really make sense logically. I can't know that I'll dislike something until _after_ I've watched it. On top of that, sometimes things just take a while to get good, sometimes you won't like something until you watched it for a while. This especially applies to internet horror, because you might get recommended a video completely out of context and so you need to watch more of it to see if you'll enjoy it. It's an argument that completely ignores the way that real people consume media to preserve the creators ego.

look at the "Fear & Hunger" Series. It looks impossible hard to take in at first but the amount of hidden lore, Books, etc gives it what it needs. It gives a reason why everything is, as it is. All themes are explained and can be found if one looks for it, It has gore, SA, Cthulhu esque beings from old Gods to new Gods, etc.
Fear and Hunger is a good example of how to depict horror and pain, it's not glorious or cool. It's painful and sad, it has victims. Every terrible theme is explored with respect and cadence. UrbanSpook feels more like a fetish imo
YESSS funger has such a fucked up list of subject matter and there's something truly like, grimy but artful with how it's executed. Pain is banal, constant, and gruesome most often. Especially when you're out of your depth. Obsessed. (Plus the devs actually have a solid opinion on CA/CSA: you literally kill the characters implied to commit it and fucking insta-die if you try to do it yourself.)
Horrific and controversial subjects have their place in horror, that place is not mere shock value. Even the most horrific things imaginable can be written with enough thought and grace to not leave the viewer with their eyes rolling. In order to use the darkest subjects effectively, do not just throw them in and call it a day. Actually explore them and show how it affects the victims and/or their families. Use the story to show how these events can haunt people, even long after they occurred. Your horror needs teeth that affects the other characters. You do not have to go into detail about the event itself, but you cannot ignore the suffering of the victims or their stories. Don't mock or disregard victims. Don't just exploit the matter. Put the effort to show how it affects them and show what happened beyond the crime scene. If your cannot use the plot to explore these subjects beyond shock, then your plot should not include it. In order to write controversial subjects into horror, you also need to research them deeply so that you thoroughly understand what you are writing about. Listen to the stories of the victims and their families. Try to look at their point of view. Use this to teach your viewers about the horror and possibly help them understand the grief of victims and mourning families. This all applies especially to rape and SA, but can also help you write murders, abuse, and other dark subjects better.
The fact he wants to say "I'll be an asshole to people who are assholes" but he made a depiction of a child going through an awful action that over 100,000 children are still going through today and a bunch of organizations have been trying to stop for decades into a meme and into merch and still thinks he's in the right is mind blowing levels of delusion I could only dream of having

Far too many people pretend that this kind of horror doesn’t happen in real life, but it does. I don’t care for the Cory controversy, but in essence, I enjoy seeing the brutality and the honesty in the series.
As an artist and author of a horror webcomic that includes the topic of CA I wish to point out a pair of things: 1. Even though Slug's style is super interesting and the artwork is well done, most of the paintings feel super repetitive (big, eyes, skinless and jeff the killer smile), which in part is not that good for a portfolio tbh 2. Seeing his narrative and pacing (or lack off, better said) it shows a LOT that this author is not even taking his time to SEE their own writing, I think this story can be saved if Slug had some sort of "beta reader" but due to his huge ego this seems impossible 3. When it comes with the whole CA thing, specially SA, pls it's not that difficult to just make a pause and think "hmm, am I being a disrespectful?", do your research, think if it's NECESSARY to show it or even describe it, bc if this guy had some common sense he would just either NOT DO IT or throw subtle hints of what happened to the children. Even I had to edit in my work some of my pages bc I thought these could be misinterpreted or felt distateful to the type of topics I'm touching, but once again, I have two beta readers who help me out with their respective perspectives. (Sorry for any mistakes, English isn't my first language)
I actually think it would be a good idea for an online horror artist to use this chance to make a series intended to criticize urbanslug/urbanspook and his "painter" series. By making a story of a person who makes horror content, as they slowly densensitize themselves and drive themselves further into a damaged psyche by intentionally trying to traumatize themselves and their audience, as they continue to write and represent more and more vile acts, until eventually they start dehumanizing others in the real world, and surround themselves by people who enable their unhealthy habits, people who are also being traumatized by their art. Until they lose the ability to seperate reality from fiction and start visualizing horrible things in their head constantly
I'd... love this as someone who's life pratixally got altered by people who threw around vile and disgusting around while I was young online. It speaks to me in a traumatic way I don't think I could ever experience.
Personally i think darker topics like csa or s*icide can be covered BUT i personally think that people who want to put these topics into horror should talk to someone who is more experienced in the topic so they can put it in in such a way that doesnt feel exploitative or there surely for shock value
@@jonathanwarner9231I feel like there is a difference between shocking and shock value. Shock value is only there to shock you, while simply being shocking is just something that... well... shocks you, but it has a bigger purpose. There are ways to write CSA/CA that actually treats the subject with the dignity is deserves and treats the victim/victims with respect, and like people, even in the horror genre (it usually is done better in the psychological horror niche, from what I've heard, but I haven't seen many series try to use it so take that with a grain of salt). It's most likely difficult to do, and is rarely done right, but it can happen. So, if they go about it correctly, while the topic would be shocking, it wouldn't be insensitive or just used for shock value, like in UrbanSpook's series.
Imagine if UrbanSPOOK "The Painter" series was actually about that, an painter. No serial killer who paints his victims for fun, no supernatural stuff. Just a normal painter. The story would tell about an painter, documenting his work, as he is trying to create his magnum opus, a work that would last forever. First video would be pretty normal, showing some of his paintings, while he explains what were his inspirations. Even the paintings would be normal, some beautiful landscapes, some NORMAL human faces, nothing out of ordinary. Then, near the end, an painting showing an somewhat distorted human face shows up, to which the Painter refuses to say what inspired him to paint it. This would go on to another episodes, where the painting become even more unhiged, more distorted. The videos through the paintings and monologue of the Painter, shows that our Painter is a man with a very troubling past, and that he may also suffer mentally because od some mental trauma. During the videos, the Painter starts to talk about his past, his abusive father who was an alcoholic, his teacher who SA him, his brother who always picked on him and once made him unalive an young bird. As the videos go on, the Painters voice is starting to sound more and more paranoid, but when he mentions an woman, his girlfriend, he sounds happy and calm, saying that she reminds him of her mother, the only person who truly loved him. The last video would be an two parter. First part would be an news report, talking about an recent unalive attemp of our Painter, who we would now know the name of. The unalive was an failure, thanks to the before mentioned girlfriend who found the Painter two minutes after he overdosed some drugs. The second part of the last video, would be from the Painters girlfriend, talking about what happend after. How the Painter is doing well, and how he found some proffesional help with his childhood trauma. The video would end on the last painting our Painter made as of know, himself and his girlfriend stading in the field of flowers, hugging each other. The painting would be titled: "My Guardian Angel". Now stop imagining that, and remeber what UrbanSPOOK actually made. And like me, be dissapointed at what he made, and what he is doing. You're welcome.
That's a good rewrite, i Made one as well with the painter as a killer, but your's is a really good concept as I haven't seen any ideas of a horror series in this genre that has a good ending, good job!
I’ll be honest, I think I prefer urbanspooks original videos to your ideas. This feels so different from the original that it might as well be something else entirely
Yeah. That idea is just something that I had in my mind for some time, after watching the last UrbanSPOOK video. And I personally don't think of my idea as an horror, at least in an common meaning associated with this genre.
because everyone in this comment section has already said what I think more or less on this series (bad, poorly written, extremely incosiderate) and its creator, I'd like to talk about how talking shit abt this series on twitter somehow got me into an argument into an avid fan of urbanspook who for some reason ended up calling me a child diddler and a "fujo-shit" because I said I liked wrinkly buff old men The context: I was pissed at people shitting on Amanda the Adventurer with no real proper criticisms and analysis towards it and pointed out that people would rather eat poorly written shock value slop like Urbanspoo, and someone who I did not fucking know who was also NOT following me showed up to defend Urbanspook, they deflected all of my criticisms, always shifted the goalpost into something else as a "gotcha", said verbatim "if horror entertains you it is no longer horror" in response to me saying that like all forms of entertainment horror has to be written carefully and tastefully no mmatter how grotesque, insulted Alex Keister for things the fandom did and eventually told me I wrote like a child diddler... whatever that means. Absolute favorite twitter argument of mine, all dude did was solidify my opinion on Urbanspook and his supporters, spineless consoomers with little to no sense of empathy
Stuff like this attracts a kindred fanbase. So basically those who don't want to have to think about their horror so it's all about gore. They're dullards and demented assholes. I wouldn't even bother interacting with such folks. They lack the capacity to engage in a dialogue much like rabid dogs.
Twitter is a scary place. I won't tell you what to do, but it would be advisable not to associate too much with stupid people. It will drive you mad, man!
@@EngineerMonkey-zp3yj don't worry I don't, my timeline is peaceful due to me cutting anything that could genuinely annoy me, only argued with this dude because he quite literally showed up at my doorstep and took a shit in my porch xD
There's a difference between a piece of media that has unsettling themes, and something that's gross just to be gross. The Thing for example is a film that relies on tension to relieve it with moments of chaos and bloodshed that pushes the story forward. Human Centipede 3 is a film thats gross just to be gross. It has no theme like the first which was made to question punishment for certain criminals. How does that all tie in with The Painter/Urban Spook? This analog series is a Human Centipede 3. It relies on depictions of child abuse of a certain nature to up the ante when there was no need for it. The series was well executed up to that point. There's no inherent issue with including that type of content but when it's also used to sell merch of a "Fuck Doll" which is a child yeah nah I'm good. It's Lazy's channel so whatever they wanna cover is up to them I just don't see the point.
In SoundCloud, the song for the 7th tape is called "w h a l e", and, after the whole impregnation by a horse along with the lack of a deep plot, it is definitely fat-shaming.
@@Justapikachu577 he is saying that in a series where multiple people have had there faces sand papered/ ripped/ or cut off he is only upset over "fat shaming" even though if you have eyes you can see that the video is imply that its a whale because of the "blow hole" in her head
@@randomguyonyt1009 well thats stupid because this comment is in response to a point in the video where she is trying to figure out the riddle. And they confirming the answer is indeed whale and not fetus because the ost is called w h a l e, the woman is fat and her painting mentioned blowholes. They are not mad.
My hot take as a Splatterpunk lover is that you're 100% correct that the story is stupid. I am fine with gore and horror and extreme horror! They're my favs. Things like Fluids by May Leitz or The Groomer by Jon Athan are some of rhe best books ecer. And they have a lot of the same elements as UrbanSpook. But they BUILD UP. They have characters. At a certain point, reading the words "and she was stabbed one hundred zillion times in the butthole 😮" is just not scary. It's stupid. If you start at gore level 100 like this series did, how can you possibly up the ante?? You can't. Then it hits diminishing returns. The creator saying people just can't handle extreme horror just feels disingenuous because I think many other extreme horror fans will have the same reactions I did: rolling my eyes a lot. No build up, no pay off, thus if you're not already sensitive to gore, it's not scary. Maybe if the horse thing or the chopped up baby thing were the FINALE you could have shocked people, or if there was some actual INVESTIGATION DONE BY THE POLICE, or if the story was COHERENT. All this narrative does imo is bother people who already don't like the genre or seem over the top/try hard/honestly downright silly to fans or horror or extreme horror.
I've never actually gotten the chance to read splatterpunk but it seems like a lot of it is infested with that stuff. like with misogyny. it sounds sensitive but it does concern me when it's only cishet men writing women being brutalized and nothing else, no plot no story, just hundreds of pages of an innocent woman being raped and mutilated, if that makes sense? I think the gore can be done well but at a point it just feels like a fetish. personally I enjoy when the victim of the splatterpunking is someone we are meant to hate. like, a despicable person. because with that the author can go crazy with what happens to them, bc the audience will obviously be like "deserved." idk it's weird it's just like. usually the ones with just women getting torture raped have weird misogyny but not from the characters, from the narration alone. and to clarify I do like gore! bit of too much of a coward to actually go wild with it when it comes to writing, but I host a roleplay (think dungeons and dragons!) where I get to go NUTS with everything. just a everything in moderation thing. plus it's just concerning when something like stories that are entirely just about women being raped and mutilated are only written by cishet men because I mean... it always seems like it's a fetish thing when it's a pattern. I know some women authors or queer authors will try that as like a "lemme try one of those plotless extreme horror things" or a test but there's the difference yk they'll be willing to go "fair lol" when someone says the story isn't that good.
@@chocomelo454 May Leitz that I referenced above, she's a trans woman. Judith Sonnet. Christine Morgan. CJ Leede. Joyce Carol Oates. V Castro. Ania Ahlborn. Arguably (depending on your views of extreme or splatter), early VC Andrews and Tananarive Due. Lots of queer people, women, queer women in this genre. If you're wanting to get into the genre, don't let the boys club of it all scare you off. The genres of filth and horror are inherently somewhat queer! Lots of these stories even deal with the experiences of women/queer people/trans people. I can vouch for the skills of these authors above but if you want more specific recs I'd always be happy to.
@@TheAbigailDee oh dw I agree with the horror being very queer part, especially body horror. it's really fascinating how that is, especially with how there are some authors who aren't queer but will actually lean into those things. while Carrie doesn't quite count it does read a lot like a mix of religious trauma and queerness. since idk why but when I first read it I read a lot of things described as maybe being that Carrie is a lesbian. it's dumb. but yeah there def is a boys club nature to it BAHA. it's nice to see though that there at people who love splatterpunk who will come out to defend women when they're being attacked for pointing out a flaw. I remember someone while talking about a story, a roll of the dice I think it was, was saying that horror, even extreme horror, is used as an escape for people. and she was saying like, when your book is misogynistic or racist or queerphobic, or just in some way can trigger victims of trauma who are reading your book as an escape, your book isn't that good. which it sounds so dumb that someone would read a book with their trauma as an escape but I know people who find comfort in fictionalized media depicting their trauma when it's handled well. either because with a lot of media the person creating the trauma is punished in the end or just because it makes them feel seen, or even just that the creators approached it carefully, so I actually really agree with that point. like, aside from just making a racist book is bad, from the standpoint of "it's meant to be shocking" I think it's good to be aware of not only your audience but the reason your audience is here. so like .. even if the author is here because they like the gore, yk not with most of the people here because its an example of art comforts the disturbed, it is good to understand why your audience is here and find a way to get a good mix of what you're here for and what they're here for my main way of doing that when I'm not writing to vent and writing because of my sheer enjoyment of horror is to have things be symbolic or have meaning. like with that thing I'm hosting, I do go a bit crazy with the body horror, the idea with it is that when a player dies their body is recreated by a being made of pain, and is used as an extension of the being. which, not much symbolism, unless you count "yes the being is made up of the pain caused at this place and the hate people associate it with bc grief" as being symbolic, but even then the thing beyond just a version of them that's wrong is that the players bond with each other and have to grapple with having to kill something that resembles their friend. I mean not that people actually understand that they usually just kill each other but- tis the intent that counts! sorry that sounds like self promo but what I was saying is that I found a way to make it enjoyable for my audience bc they're here for the story, especially emotional connection to the characters. and I'm like, I like body horror, you like body horror, but we need a reason... and then boom I have one now
I also love extreme horror and yep just randomly throwing in THAT type of violence is just lazy. If you can take it out and the story stays essentially the same then don’t use it. It should make sense and propel the story. Also, when I go consume extreme horror I know what I’m getting into and CONSENT to be exposed to that material. Urban spook just came off as your everyday horror then sucker punches you with *shudders* that grossness. I didn’t know or consent to it and therefor wasn’t in the right state of mind. Informed consent is so so so important with extreme horror
@@chocomelo454 I totally see what you're saying, and omg you should promo yourself and advocate for your talents!! I just always worry that people see the (many) terrible people in the genre (I know the specific author you're referencing - he is an untalented hack as well as a misogynist to BOOT) and don't explore it because of gatekeeping horrible bigots. So I always wanna spread the word of cool chicas who also write horrible disgusting nastiness lol 😂
I don’t remember where I heard this, but I remember being told that, “if your story doesn’t need the heavy subject matter to work, then don’t add it.” UrbanSPOOK could’ve easily made a slasher series without including SA, specifically CSA. The Painter still works without it, so including it definitely feels exploitative.
Thank you for analyzing and critiquing the series/creator instead of making a 2 min video saying "Urbanspook bad". I agree with all your points and you're great to listen to. Keep up the awesome work. Also your makeup is great.
I am so glad more people are expressing their problems with Urbanspook, ngl for months I thought I was crazy cus I've pretty much only really heard unanimous praise to him.
the act of using 'autistic' as an insult, when autism is a literal mental disorder that affects one's life in EVERY shape and form, is... kinda iffy, to say the very fucking least, as someone who's friends with a lot of autistic people. it's just shitty, because autistic people aren't pussies or stupid, and yet he's using it as an insult to call pastra a stupid pussy.
Urban spook executed the concept terribly, also the character who found the vhs tapes is only EVER mentioned in the description, we never get in betweens of the character giving their initial input on the vhs tapes. It’s like besides the description, the character really doesn’t exist. There really just isn’t no plot at all
Yeah, like, what's even the set up for? It don't seem like he's watching police documents, nor it looks like an in universe short movie about the events
Kris Straub's Local 58 is also really good. Contingency is an absolute masterpiece imho for anyone looking for a good jumping off point. Also, I have heard people call this the Dormitabis of analog horror, gore and csa for sheer shock value.
About Freddy Krueger, making him a child molester who kills people in their nightmares actually makes some level of sense. As a victim of CSA, the nightmares that result from that are incredibly intense. I definitely agree that it wasn't needed, especially at the time the first one was made, but it's not completely nonsensical. Also, most child killers are already pedophiles so it's not completely insane. But if a piece of media is able to come up with or give an alternative motive (William Afton wanting remnant), then it's better to go with the more creative/story-driven reason. Urbanspook is an example of it not being needed. The killers have been established to target adults. This goes back to the MO being inconsistent and not based in reality. A serial killer typically doesn't go off-script in such an extreme way. The mere existence of Cory and Margaret adds to the story being dogshit. In other words, sometimes it makes sense for a horror character to be a pedophile, even if it seemingly only serves to make the character seem worse. With Urbanspook, there's no real rhyme or reason to anything that happens so it upset people that CSA was added for no reason.
UrbanSpook genuinely feels like HappyTreeFriends but with a story so loose it makes Water feel like a brick wall. Shock content made for Shock purposes and the police being so stupid in their investigation you wonder if the town itself is built like a GTA Server. You'd think they'd check cameras in stores or public, or at the BARE MINIMUM, ask around hobby shops and ask "Has anyone come in to buy excess amounts of paint?" Which could help IMMENSELY. I feel like any story built up is just lost due to the shock factor being overwhelming and schlocky, and if a Twist killer was planned it wouldn't work because so many people have dropped the series due to no real payoff or story progress being made by anyone except just adding more victims.
Exactly!! or at this point ask around the pharmacies that sell that one viagra drug, because as of now the story has at least 2 animals overdosed on that stuff. yuck. Also does every single victim live in a separate building without any neighbors?
Urban doesn’t get that there’s a limit to shock. Eventually it stops being shocking. If you really don’t know where to stop, you’ll overshoot ‘shocking’ and end up in ‘unintentionally hilarious’ when you try to be so shocking that you literally escape the realms of what’s realistic or plausible.
Kinda went the same direction as other analog horror in their own 'face distort scary ooo' way, only this time it was more 'depraved disgusting thing happen + art WTF'. He DID make something different, however just like the *other* side of shitty analog horror he made a massive mistake as a creator and began to completely throw away any sense of subtlety. YES, I GET IT, IT'S HARD but HORROR NEEDS SUBTLETY FOLKS XD. Dude started off strong but fell off way faster than most creators.
@@Itz_GamePoint I mean it’s almost…Doofenschmirtz level shit. “And then back in my childhood I was stabbed 450 times and they had to replace my eyes with ones that came from a pig, and my family still forced me to be the lawn gnome.”
Lol, you just reminded me of memories that have been left to rot in the back of my brain. Thanks for reminding me that poor Doof was forced to be a yard decoration lol XD.
Both the concept and the art of UrbanSPOOK are top tier. Slug is a genuinely talented artist that hopped into the analog horror trend with no plans or a real story in mind and the longer the series goes on, it shows.
Hi Urbanspook! 🙄Seriously if this isn't a joke then you need to expand your horizons. His stuff is utter trash even if you ignore the shock value stuff.
My guy. The video *itself* talks about how Slug is a talented artist and how the concept of a serial killer who immortalizes their actions through painting is really good for horror. All the problems with the series are in it's execution, it doesn't go anywhere, the use of gore and taboo topics is tasteless, and most of it is just trying to one up itself to be more shocking. It's a *bad* series but that doesn't take away from it's few shining points.
@GangstaSparkleFairy Yeah, the series itself is bad, but I still feel that I got to give where credit it due when it comes to the art, since it think it’s pretty good. Of course, art and taste are subjective, so not everyone will think that way.
I honestly think the dude was on drugs, never been drunk but have taken strong weed and have said some pretty stupid things. In reality, man's probably extremely mentally disturbed (as am I) and he jumped into analog horror with art to express himself, admitting his series was approaching mid in narrative, but I guess poor mental health + emotional chemical alteration eventually led to him going into a rage and never stopping, possibly using substances to cope even more and further worsening his condition. Honestly feel bad for the poor asshole, just assuming but as someone with an extremely fucked up brain I hope Urban eventually pulls through and perhaps even pursues better storytelling if he finds analog horror as a passion. Seems like the situation's just getting worse, though.
32:54 considering one of the first victims had his face cut off, the killer could be wearing it 'Texas chainsaw massacre' style to hide himself, what with the stitching and inner set of teeth
Gore and shock for the sake of gore and shock is like the horror equivalent of relying on fart jokes for humor. While it's possible to implement the elements into the subject matter in an artistic way, I feel like it's rarely done so with tact. Much like how it's possible to make a good fart joke that isn't the crutch of the comedy, I think it's possible to use gore and shock as an effective element of horror. It's just very tricky to do so without falling into tropes or the same old same old predictable outcomes to each installment. Sometimes, less is more.
You freedom limiters are so lame bro, slug didn't do anything wrong he's just exploring creative freedom and doing stuff that others don't do because majority doesn't like it, also he didn't make the series to please anyone or make it some sort five star piece of fiction that'd be praised by the masses.
@@SuperDuperSigmaMale Did you miss the part where he used "Autistic" as a slur and tacked on "Furry" while responding to criticism from Pastra??? Pretty sure that's not okay?? I don't mind gore and shock if it's got a reason to be included in the story ((I'm not a pansy, I quite like the classic horror, like The Thing and the original Alien films)), but his episode format became pretty repetitive after a while and, much like people complain about FNAF and it's jumpscares, it loses its punch after a while. It boils down to "Police find painting. Find victim who is the subject of painting. Someone is dead. Oh, here's another painting, I wonder how this victim must have died? Oh no, another child? Wow, what a... tragedy. Really can't be worse a child, oh wait, more children. What about a baby too? How about you worry about this dog as well?" Like, I get that in horror stories, the "monster" doesn't have a moral compass ((Freddy Kruger is a beloved horror icon despite targeting kids for the most part for his horrific nightmare fuel, and he's pretty funny too)), nor do they generally care how old thier victims are or care who they attack ((Chucky, another horror icon, literally embodies this idea)). But there's a fine line between it existing for the sake of moving the plot forward, or being so overused that you have to wonder if the content creator is enjoying making it a little too much. But seriously. Using "Autistic" as pejorative is pretty messed up.
this is very creepypasta-esque! like you said! the bloody body horror reminds me vaguely of the “bleeding eyes” trope, and wasn’t there an entire creepypasta about a painter?? (idrk the story of that one as well as some other creepypastas though….) and the kind of “they found this mysterious painting at the crime scene…” thing as well, reminds me of ben drowned or the slenderman drawings! (i think you can tell i was a creepypasta kid when i wasyounger)
oh yeah that one. the one with the guy who's backstory is that his parents wanted a daughter so they forced him to be a girl and then when he hit puberty just randomly stopped doing that. and then gets bullied in college so he does a murder yeah that one never made sense to me. not just like "why did you make the trans allegory a serial killer with the trans allegory being their motive" but also because up until that point Helen seemed relatively normal. no thoughts of homicide, just a very quiet man who found solace in his art. also his paintings weren't even paintings he just wrote with blood.
i feel like urbanslug gets so defensive when its not that people have a problem with the idea of gore or taboo subjects being explored in stories, it's that they are mishandling those VERY SERIOUS issues and not treating them (and subsequently the people who are real life victims of these heinous crimes) with the respect and care they deserve. the fact that painting title alone didn't immediately make urbanslug pause and think, "hm! maybe this isn't such a good idea?" says enough about their character to me
I think the "don't like don't watch" approach can only really work if the same person also then has a "don't like the criticism? Don't respond to the person making it". But also I think don't like don't watch/read is really the only way to interact with fandom/internet as a whole these days. There's always gonna be stuff in fiction we don't like - I don't like romance, so I don't read it, for example. Believe me, life on the internet and in fandom is so much easier when you just don't engage with something that's annoying you 😂 But obviously, I am not a reviewer, so 🤷
> 27 stab wounds > perineum Okay so, and excuse me for the bit of gore at the end of my next paragraph... but either Jackie Graham is a giantess and about fifteen times the size of a normal human woman, this artist has no idea what the perineum area is, or this artist has no idea that when police counts stab wounds it's how many individual plunges they can track and 27 stabs on this area would be reported as a gaping wound caused by excessive force with a stabbing weapon.
Urbanspook is the kinda guy to base his entire personality around those notoriously disturbing movies. The likes of: Salo, A serbian film, Human centipede and its sequels; stuff like that.
Alright I have to say it. Greylock has always been a vastly superior series compared to The Painter. Edit: of course she mentions Greylock after I post this lmao
Haven't seen anyone covering RedHill VPC yet. I thought the series concluded last year, but 2 months ago, a video was posted with no title. While not top tier, you can seen the passion and effort put into their work. Channel Link: www.youtube.com/@RedhillVideoProductionCompany/videos
If we’re willing to criticize UrbanSPOOK for containing a tasteless depiction of CSA, then we should probably be willing to criticize Rob Gavagan, one of the creators of Greylock, for his grooming allegations.
I think the scariest thing about this series is the fact that the killers don’t really get reproductions. It’s almost like the creator idolizes the killers… and who knows what he could do if he gets brave enough.
IMO the painting of Tina represents the internal death of her fulfilling life. That she will forever be scarred and a shell of herself due to losing her loved ones and being put in such a traumatic situation. It is a picture of her inner suffering. Her symbolic death. Edit - wow I don't remember writing this. Thanks for the uppies!
25:17 Many people keep missing the fact that the brick was titled “meat”, aka meaning she had “meat shoved down her throat”, and pairing that with the sexualization of Cory I’m sure you can guess what I mean
the fact that this series could've been something akin to The Devil's Candy, but instead of going with a cohesive story. it's basically shock and gore. it could've been done really well too! also calling Theft King "Pastra at home" made me chuckle.
Tbh I thought the story of this series was in the point of view of a detective trying to catch a monster that turned into two monsters that are impossible to catch because everyone are targets and the monsters are targeting anyone who gets to close like police, an Intelligent monster who uses art as his muse and a brutal monster that sees red every 5 seconds like Hannibal and Victor Crowley.....but they could also be brothers
Honestly, I think it would be better if the two had vastly different art styles. Like say for instance the more intelligent one has the style he has now, creepy symbolic and unnerving. Where as the more violent one has an art style more closely akin to a child’s paintings or just a more simplistic style.
That would be cool too, to see how both serial killers see the world or what not, but I wouldn't be shocked to see if K1 watches K2 kill the victims and he paints what he sees and vice versa @@braedenmclean5304
I’m surprised you didn’t mention Alex kister (the creator of Mandela catalogue) vaguely calling urbanSPOOK out by tweeting. While he didn’t mention it by name, everyone in the comments of that tweet seems to think it’s about Urban
Shock horror definitely has a place but that’s when it’s done right, Urban Spooks is just a teenager sitting on a toilet and he’s like “I have an idea💡, Horsec### 🐴 Chainsaw *orgee*🥩 😮”
I still can't give over him telling him pastras to talk about what he likes when Pastras is known for his positive outlook and talking about things he enjoys...
I’m SUPER glad I listened to my inner voice to stay away from Urbanspooks. As a CSA/r*pe victim that lasted a while, it genuinely hurts to see people praise the disgusting writing. I use Dead Dove, gore, and things like r*pe to cope with the fact I never got justice. I was 7 when it started, and didnt stop until I was 20. I used my **own** experience to cope and work through my own shit. I’m very private about my life, but I will disclose that I developed mental disorders that makes it impossible for me to be close to others. I have DID, C-PTSD, and body dysmorphia because of what happened. **My suffering is not something to has as shock factor horror.**
The one thing I LOVED about anologue horror was how I never had to worry about Sexual themes to pull the plot forward. I battle when it comes to those themes and it distracts me from enjoying the main plot. So when I saw Urban Spook even in the first video about the 30 something stab wounds in a very not so safe for work way it put me off so much I went into a haze and didn't even take in anything and it got SO Much worse as it went on
personally I feel like it extends way past being uncomfortable for horror's sake alone. While peoples boundaries on what they consider too much can vary, for me it greatly pushed past mine and left me feeling genuinely sick and uncomfortable outside of pure horror. I do imagine originally the intent was intended to be more along the lines of 'this is fucked up that theoretically someone could do this' but they leaned way into the focus of graphic crime scenes and scary paintings, if they balanced it out with more actual forensic and police investigation and toned down the graphicness (at least even in just description) of the crime scenes, it could work if it was done by the right person. And I think they dealt with the subject matter of SA in an insensitive manner, along with trying to monetize the art of those said victims paintings too feels very disrespectful to the subject matter and not properly handled at all. Plus, if the art was made before the story, then DON'T MAKE THE STORY CONNECTED TO IT SHIT LIKE T H A T THEN
@@jonathanwarner9231 I wouldn't say sensitively, more maturely and respectfully. It really feels like the aspect of SA was put there just for the pure standalone act of shock value, with is pretty fucked up to do, I hope I don't have to explain to you why so. Several horrors actually still depict SA in a respectful and mature handeled sense, not just being used purely to shock and horrify, which is my main gripe, the SA feels like it's only for shock value alone and nothing else.
you’re so funny and genuinely so sweet, you made experiencing this controversy and learning about it SO MUCH easier just with your humor and the way you input it
My thing with the term “shock value” is that is has an inherently negative connotation and is often associated with being edgy for the sake of being edgy. The truth is that shock value can serve a purpose. Shock value can be a vehicle to make certain story elements sit with you so you’re more likely to analyze them. (Octavia Butler does this really well. Clive Barker has done this with varying results but some of his attempts are really successful.) The problem is that a lot of creators see not only shocking the audience, but using completely unoriginal shock value tropes because they know they’re shocking, as a substitute for putting work into more original ways to make the audience think. (It also serves as a shield from criticism because they can say that everyone who dislikes their approach must be some sort of “triggered prude” or whatever.) I haven’t seen UrbanSpook, so IDK if this describes them, but from your video, it kind of sounds like it does.
Honestly can compare 'The Painter' to 'August Underground'. It's good at what it does, it's just that the creators of 'August Underground' were chill about even bratty bitch comments whereas Urban began some alcohol-induced toddler rant against anyone who stood against him. I get you're getting a lot of mean and unconstructive criticism but dude cmon, being a total ass beast is NOT gonna help lmao.
58:01 "If you don't like it, don't watch" is genuinely one of the worst arguments. How are we supposed to know if we like something or not if we don't watch it first?
Have you seen Skinamarink, Lazy? I think that movie is a great example of how to cover heavy topics in an appropriate manner. I recommend watching "Heck" before you watch Skinamarink, because in my opinion Heck may cover heavier topics, Skinamarink is so much more disturbing and traumatic if its something youre not prepared for
I HATE people who use the "its shock horror" excuse, they always claim they're big horror fans but if they actually took a second to actually be in most horror fan spaces, practically all, They'd know Shock Horror is considered the cheapest and most hated form of Horror. Usually it only even really scares little kids. Not to mention using CSA as a form of shock horror then isnt even shock horror, its just exploitation. It exclusively serves as exploitation made to scare random children.
urbanspook sucks, like i LOVE horror, but urbanspook is just, haha gore without a good story!! you can make a super gorey piece of media and make a good story. theres a difference between genuine horror and just, disgust, and i think thats the problem with urbanspook, its just disgusting and shock value. also his response to pastra just felt super ableist, i dont get why he felt the need to bring up autistic ppl just because pastra doesn’t like his work lol(saying this as an autistic person.)
Same to be honest i never saw the whole series when I first heard about him in his controversy and I Immediately just thought oh just some horror series that just does the same thing until it gets old nothing else just constant gore tortured victims and nothing else nothing new but after I heard about how he acted towards people who criticized his work and how he responded to pastra I immediately knew this guy was just a over grown petty man child

The opening part that says your show is "funded by viewers like you", there couldn't be a more perfect introduction to an analog series video, I'm older lady and it made me feel nostalgic.
Check out Rob Gavagan's 'Greylock', I hear his content also appeals to older folk (NOT trying to be offensive I swear, just know there's a lot of aged adults who follow him lol).
Wow. What timing, I have had mixed feelings about UrbanSpook's content the whole time I've been watching the series. I saw he recently uploaded a couple days ago and passed on watching it, then came across this today. While I have my standpoints regarding horror content and fiction in general, I do understand the controversy behind the subject matter of his content. The mystery and scare factors are effective, but it still makes my skin crawl. I'm unsure of how I feel about it anymore. I look forward to seeing your take on this!
I personally think any and all subjects, no matter how dark are fair game in media as long as they're used with any kind of grace or serve a purpose narratively. UrbanSpook's...kinda doesn't do any of those? They feel like they're there for the sake of getting a reaction and that's it, you could replace some of the worst stuff with literally any other type of less charged but still brutal crime and the plot wouldn't change in the slightest. Not that there's more to change since every other episode boils down to 'theres a killer and or killers. He did this heinous execution to these victims. Police are stumped."
I just dont like how he literally has consistent p-word themes, to the point it’s disgusting. His past work includes a ton of r-e and p-word themes. Im surprised people still support him.

I’m sorry that happened to you, and thank you for giving your insight on a situation like this.

i think a digital horror/analog horror that depicts abuse in a tasteful way is lacey's flash games. like it's about a girl who went through abuse from her uncle, but its not just for the sake of an edgy story, its to show the effects of the abuse and how lacey has dealt with it in an unhealthy manner. it's perfect and also terrifying in the imagery, much better than urbanspook (although the memes are hilarious)
That isnt horror tho
@@funnyfish0526 Are you joking? It's very much horror and horror has a long history of being used to critique things in modern day society. Bug murders is using horror to critique how society dehumanizes victims of serial killers, so yes its very much horror.
@@funnyfish0526you’re telling me deeply disturbing imagery depicting a persons mental decline and immense trauma alongside horrific visuals to accompany it, isnt horror?
I’m in the camp that you CAN depict darker concepts such as SA and shit, but it has to be done TASTEFULLY. The original version of Lolita is written to show you how MANIPULATIVE and EVIL Humbert Humbert is, not to sexualize his child victim. The movie remakes completely miss this and I think the original author disapproves of them greatly.
You can do so much with such dark topics. You can show through abstract art or cutaways the mental anguish or how it feels like WITHOUT being exploitative, without making it basically shock or fictional snuff.
Another reason why Urbanspook is lazy-there’s not even emotional investment he just goes “HEY LOOK AT THESE DEAD BABIES AND R*PED CHILDREN”
Urbanspook is a lesson on everything you SHOULDN’T do.

The phrasing is slightly different but in the end it's also just "look this kid was abused and oh now it's also evil and wants to kill another child"
Because that's original. And makes sense.
And don't forget "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"! ^_^
Children Under the House is definitely better in terms of depicting violence on children compared to anything that SPOOK tried to do, but that's assuming SPOOK actually tried to do anything storywise

Aside from the obvious stuff like Cory and Urbanslug's sensitivity to criticism, there were a few things that always baffled me about UrbanSPOOK:
1: The Killer had wildly varying methods to murder.
Point still stands though bout the guns.
because at this point the killer is a power/fetish fantasy for the guy to get all his gore needs out rather than actually write something believable and good. these are some of the most basic things you'd think of when trying to write a killer which really does show just how much he actually cares for the """story""" and delivering a narrative
literally this series needs people to not behave like people for it to work
you mean to tell me the PI's neighbours heard a dog barking for hours on end and decided to just ignore it instead of investigating or calling the police, when a violent killer ran loose in the area and was openly showing their cruelty
Yes!
NO killer painter would EVER survive a southern man with a shotgun

I think urbanspook could have been a lot more interesting if it was more about investigating and finding the killer rather than just gushing over corpses.Or maybe they could have gave the victims and investigators personalities so you would fell bad when they were killed.Or they could have went into details about the investigators mental state or the motives of the killer instead of just "I like murdering people lmao".Any of these would have made urbanspook significantly more interesting then it turned out to be.

But at least there was a story behind that one.

That’s a better theory than anything I said in this video
the fact that he uses "furry" too roots in the theory that UrbanSpook is just not as mature as he believes. he's the pinnacle of edgy dudes who find gore and nsfw entertaining or funny and turn around at anyone who disagrees with him.

Hey, I personally really like Urbanspook because it’s the first of its kind to properly display the true nature of humanity; destructive, vile, and exploitative of anything weaker than them. Far too many people pretend that this kind of horror doesn’t happen in real life, but it does. I don’t care for the Cory controversy, but in essence, I enjoy seeing the brutality and the honesty in the series.
yeah but featuring murderers are fine? even though it happens and its WAY worse
As an artist and author of a horror webcomic that includes the topic of CA I wish to point out a pair of things:
1. Even though Slug's style is super interesting and the artwork is well done, most of the paintings feel super repetitive (big, eyes, skinless and jeff the killer smile), which in part is not that good for a portfolio tbh
2. Seeing his narrative and pacing (or lack off, better said) it shows a LOT that this author is not even taking his time to SEE their own writing, I think this story can be saved if Slug had some sort of "beta reader" but due to his huge ego this seems impossible
Until they lose the ability to seperate reality from fiction and start visualizing horrible things in their head constantly
ok that's actually an interesting idea
I'd... love this as someone who's life pratixally got altered by people who threw around vile and disgusting around while I was young online. It speaks to me in a traumatic way I don't think I could ever experience.
That's literally the story of Sapho the Hypnotist and Kero the Wolf.
This is an interesting idea, considering Alex Bale made an entire ARG based on the TH-cam algorithm.
Personally i think darker topics like csa or s*icide can be covered BUT i personally think that people who want to put these topics into horror should talk to someone who is more experienced in the topic so they can put it in in such a way that doesnt feel exploitative or there surely for shock value
Agreed
How can csa be portrayed in a way that is not shocking?
@@jonathanwarner9231 just give it substance. Besides, after you see something so many times is loses effect
Oh man, the amount of times I've wanted to make an OCD suicidal depression analog horror thanks to the mental hell I live in.

I think the gore can be done well but at a point it just feels like a fetish. personally I enjoy when the victim of the splatterpunking is someone we are meant to hate. like, a despicable person. because with that the author can go crazy with what happens to them, bc the audience will obviously be like "deserved."
idk it's weird it's just like. usually the ones with just women getting torture raped have weird misogyny but not from the characters, from the narration alone.
and to clarify I do like gore! bit of too much of a coward to actually go wild with it when it comes to writing, but I host a roleplay (think dungeons and dragons!) where I get to go NUTS with everything. just a everything in moderation thing.
plus it's just concerning when something like stories that are entirely just about women being raped and mutilated are only written by cishet men because I mean... it always seems like it's a fetish thing when it's a pattern. I know some women authors or queer authors will try that as like a "lemme try one of those plotless extreme horror things" or a test but there's the difference yk they'll be willing to go "fair lol" when someone says the story isn't that good.

I remember someone while talking about a story, a roll of the dice I think it was, was saying that horror, even extreme horror, is used as an escape for people. and she was saying like, when your book is misogynistic or racist or queerphobic, or just in some way can trigger victims of trauma who are reading your book as an escape, your book isn't that good.
which it sounds so dumb that someone would read a book with their trauma as an escape but I know people who find comfort in fictionalized media depicting their trauma when it's handled well. either because with a lot of media the person creating the trauma is punished in the end or just because it makes them feel seen, or even just that the creators approached it carefully, so I actually really agree with that point. like, aside from just making a racist book is bad, from the standpoint of "it's meant to be shocking" I think it's good to be aware of not only your audience but the reason your audience is here.
so like .. even if the author is here because they like the gore, yk not with most of the people here because its an example of art comforts the disturbed, it is good to understand why your audience is here and find a way to get a good mix of what you're here for and what they're here for
my main way of doing that when I'm not writing to vent and writing because of my sheer enjoyment of horror is to have things be symbolic or have meaning. like with that thing I'm hosting, I do go a bit crazy with the body horror, the idea with it is that when a player dies their body is recreated by a being made of pain, and is used as an extension of the being.
which, not much symbolism, unless you count "yes the being is made up of the pain caused at this place and the hate people associate it with bc grief" as being symbolic, but even then the thing beyond just a version of them that's wrong is that the players bond with each other and have to grapple with having to kill something that resembles their friend.
No problem!
Urbanspook bad
If Urbanspook starts touching kids, I swear to God.
Haven't ever watched Local 58 actually, hear it's about aliens infecting Earth's moon causing anomalous activity which seems like a pretty cool idea.
At least with HTF, it doesn’t insensitively use extremely serious topics besides the graphic violence.
Dude urbanspook isn't like happy tree freands its way different its like in painting show scary body
Exactly!! or at this point ask around the pharmacies that sell that one viagra drug, because as of now the story has at least 2 animals overdosed on that stuff. yuck. Also does every single victim live in a separate building without any neighbors?
One of my problems with the series is the lack of confirmation we get from the police. We just get where the bodys are and the paintings.
Yeah that's literally how the cops act in an active investigation

@@GangstaSparkleFairy Oh so this is a football game now, not a critique. If that's how you want it then...
Calling Theft king "pastra at home" is the greatest joke I've heard in the video.
How about you worry about this dog as well?"
Like, I get that in horror stories, the "monster" doesn't have a moral compass ((Freddy Kruger is a beloved horror icon despite targeting kids for the most part for his horrific nightmare fuel, and he's pretty funny too)), nor do they generally care how old thier victims are or care who they attack ((Chucky, another horror icon, literally embodies this idea)). But there's a fine line between it existing for the sake of moving the plot forward, or being so overused that you have to wonder if the content creator is enjoying making it a little too much.
But seriously. Using "Autistic" as pejorative is pretty messed up.

also his paintings weren't even paintings he just wrote with blood.
@@chocomelo454bloody painter, but tbf i did enjoy reading that one
i feel like urbanslug gets so defensive when its not that people have a problem with the idea of gore or taboo subjects being explored in stories, it's that they are mishandling those VERY SERIOUS issues and not treating them (and subsequently the people who are real life victims of these heinous crimes) with the respect and care they deserve. the fact that painting title alone didn't immediately make urbanslug pause and think, "hm! maybe this isn't such a good idea?" says enough about their character to me
I think the "don't like don't watch" approach can only really work if the same person also then has a "don't like the criticism? Don't respond to the person making it". But also I think don't like don't watch/read is really the only way to interact with fandom/internet as a whole these days. There's always gonna be stuff in fiction we don't like - I don't like romance, so I don't read it, for example.
Believe me, life on the internet and in fandom is so much easier when you just don't engage with something that's annoying you 😂
But obviously, I am not a reviewer, so 🤷
> 27 stab wounds
> perineum
Okay so, and excuse me for the bit of gore at the end of my next paragraph...
but either Jackie Graham is a giantess and about fifteen times the size of a normal human woman, this artist has no idea what the perineum area is, or this artist has no idea that when police counts stab wounds it's how many individual plunges they can track and 27 stabs on this area would be reported as a gaping wound caused by excessive force with a stabbing weapon.
Like… was it necessary???
Also... OUCH! Yikes!
Wait until you see the latest video where a victim had 437 stab wounds all over his body and I’m wondering how they were able to track all that.

Greylock is the GOAT
If we’re willing to criticize UrbanSPOOK for containing a tasteless depiction of CSA, then we should probably be willing to criticize Rob Gavagan, one of the creators of Greylock, for his grooming allegations.
I think the scariest thing about this series is the fact that the killers don’t really get reproductions. It’s almost like the creator idolizes the killers… and who knows what he could do if he gets brave enough.
Well fuck, hope law enforcement isn't as as dumb here, if I'm unfortunate to live in SLUG's area after all.

the fact that this series could've been something akin to The Devil's Candy, but instead of going with a cohesive story. it's basically shock and gore. it could've been done really well too! also calling Theft King "Pastra at home" made me chuckle.
Think you might be onto something
Honestly, I think it would be better if the two had vastly different art styles.
Like say for instance the more intelligent one has the style he has now, creepy symbolic and unnerving.
Where as the more violent one has an art style more closely akin to a child’s paintings or just a more simplistic style.

It disturbs me that he'd sell that as merchandise. You know, the Cory thing.
The one thing I LOVED about anologue horror was how I never had to worry about Sexual themes to pull the plot forward. I battle when it comes to those themes and it distracts me from enjoying the main plot. So when I saw Urban Spook even in the first video about the 30 something stab wounds in a very not so safe for work way it put me off so much I went into a haze and didn't even take in anything and it got SO Much worse as it went on
I love how in the self portrait of the killer he has microscopic eyes while in reality he has big Googly eyes
personally I feel like it extends way past being uncomfortable for horror's sake alone.
Plus, if the art was made before the story, then DON'T MAKE THE STORY CONNECTED TO IT SHIT LIKE T H A T THEN
How do you sensitively portray sa in horror?
