Interesting choice of alignment on your shirt there, Paul! Rock and roll alignment that one I think 😅🤘 I always saw you doing huge training weeks and pushing harder and harder, and just assumed as am experienced runner you could cope with the masses of work forever. Recognising the need to back off is another sign of experience though, so you're still winning 👍🏻👍🏻🏃♂️
Haha! Yes I've always identified with the need to just let the universe do its thing! Dungeons and Dragons taught me many lessons! Sometimes we need to give ourselves a little space to get a clear picture! Keep pushing, Mark!
It's really good that you recognised that you were in an overtrained state and took action to pull things back! You've had a busy year of running with various challenges, it will have taken its toll. Good to see you back :)
So glad to hear from you! I was just wondering the other day what you’ve been up to! We need to set up a livestream again sometime! Can’t wait to hear about your new goals! 🤓
Hey Paul, it's great to see you back and sharing your journey! Your honesty about the challenges you faced during your half marathon training is really insightful. It's a valuable reminder to find a balance in our training and not push too hard. Looking forward to your new training cycle announcement. Keep pursuing those PRs, age is just a number! 👍💪
It happens. Recover, be smart, listen to your body…I need to listen to myself there haha. Sounds like you’ve put a lot of thought into it and have a solid plan moving forward. 😊
Thanks so much for your constant support in watching and leaving such encouraging comments, Celine! I've been having a tough time with motivation for running and YT, but friends like you make a big difference! Keep pushing!
Hey Paul! I've been gone too! Way to take care of your health-that you recognized you were over training! Thanks for always being a good example of health and wisdom! Glad you're back- glad to be back too!!
On 10/15, after 16 months of surgery and recovery, I walked a half marathon at the Long Beach Marathon in southern California. No exact time, but around 2 and 1/2 hours of a consistent pace. Just wanted to see if I could do it. Watching you inspired me to try. Thank you, Paul!
That is so amazing, impressive, and humbling to me, Ellen! That blows my mind! I hope you are able to keep up the walking and possibly running into the future!! You are truly inspiring!
Great talk Paul. I think your next event will be a marathon and you will also hit the half marathon PR. I think sometimes if a strong hobby we push harder than needed but it is not our job. For example : I never taper for a race but would not coach someone that way. The weight issue is a challenge for all of us. I like you are honest about it and not hide the weight discussions like many coaches. As Ryan Hall says it is critical to be at the correct weight for a race for PR especially the pros. Have a great weekend!
Good stuff Dev, we can all learn from that. The highs and lows of running. Sometimes a training block goes great, sometimes not so much, but a bad ones usually followed by a better one 😁
Hey Paul, so nice to have you back again!! Last night I did my first EVER track session in the pouring rain, supposed to be 6x800m repeats, but did 7.5 of them just for good measure!! I encouraged some very new runners telling them it's not the result that matters but the effort they're putting in, and it hit me how TRUE that is ... including not to do too much either!! On Brodie Sharpe's Run Smarter podcast, back at the end of 2020 he did an interview with Dr Carl Foster called Overtraining Syndrome and Recovery ... have you listened to that one Paul?? It's one I repeat listen every now and again!! See you again soon with pleasure!!!🙋🏻♀
Hi Paul, thanks for the transparency and honesty, hard to find among runners on social media. Sharing what's not working and how to adjust/adapt is as valuable, if not more so, than only showing success. Your experience about doing too much, too quickly resonates with me, and I'm also resetting my training goals. Keep chasing your dreams!
Thanks for the honest update, Paul. We learn as much if not more when things don't go the way that we expect. It sounds like you made a very smart choice to hit reset. We push through the brutal summer conditions and tell ourselves that we're managing it, but sometimes there's nothing left in the tank when we get to the beautiful fall days we were training for. That's hit me to some degree this year too. It's still amazing to go out and cover ground when it's like this outside, and winter is a great time for building back up. Rock on!
Thanks for sharing Paul! Sorry to hear the training didn’t go as planned, but hey, it sounds like you learning as you go like the rest of us. Cheering you on from afar my friend!
I am very guilty of overtraining. Today, Thursday 9th November, I just could not train. I realised that I have been overtraining and my body needed rest. I have been in denial about my age (63) but it has been a hard lesson to learn. I will take on board what my body has been telling me from here on. As for youtube....it's been put way down on my priorities in my life. Take care Paul.
Sounds like we are in similar places, Oggie! As far as I'm concerned, you are a superstar and a shining example to follow! Keep pushing, safely, my friend!
Overtraining is also my problem most of the times... I'm enthusiast for the results, I feel better and better and then I push more every time ... I hope in my next preparation to think about it during training. Thanks for the video Paul!
Good to see you back Paul, sorry to hear you wont be running the half marathon in November now, that was a surprise to me, you love training hard, but wise to allow yourself to be flexible, you were asking what are some of the things we would like to see on your channel, one thing I would like to see is you run a half marathon trail race type run, not an over technical trails, but just buffed out trails for fun & really enjoy a trail race, with a podium finish haha 😀🏃🏽♂️🌲🌴🌳👣👍🏼🥳
Good tip on making adjustments as you go. I think I’m coming to the same tentative conclusion in regards to overtraining. Any tips on good foods to eat to gain weight? Send some over here.
Getting the balance of training intensity/mileage/rest is very tricky and ultimately you know your body better than anyone. Also that balance changes and changes more quickly as we age. Track work really does need a couple of easy days beforehand, or an easy day and complete rest day. I am sure better sessions were in you, it just sounds like you were jaded. For my thoughts, if those sessions were "too intense" you would have likely got ill or injured, which you didn't, so it must have just been too much mileage before the session. As for the weight, with the mileage you are doing and the glycogen stores you will need on that weekly mileage, would 150 not be the weight your body naturally feels strongest at? Unless you are eating lots of junk at night, which I am sure you are not, a lower weight can also make you weaker. As I say, you know your body better than anyone. Did you have the opportunity to chat with another experienced runner before the decision? I feel a little frustrated for you, but there is always another challenge!!💪
Great to see you back Paul. Love this, very honest reflections and really important for all of us to take a step back sometimes and tweak things so thanks for sharing this. Look forward to hearing your new goal 😀
Good to see you, Paul. As you know, I'm a great advocate for having goals and targets, but not putting yourself under too much pressure. Rest brings rewards in training :) Keep up the good work 😁
It's a cool 💪💪💪

That sounds like fun! Let me know when you are free and we can get the band back together! World tour 2024!

Thank you so much, April! You rock!
Good stuff Dev, we can all learn from that. The highs and lows of running. Sometimes a training block goes great, sometimes not so much, but a bad ones usually followed by a better one 😁
I like your way of thinking! Onward and upward, my friend! Keep pushing!

Good to see you back, Paul. Very honest and upfront video but a lovely message we all need reminding of sometimes. 👌

Good to see you back sir. It’s always a good thing when we realize things aren’t going well, the we can regroup and refocus.

We live and learn...grow and share. Wonderful. ❤
Nice to have you back 👍
Thanks for your support!
Paul, this is all so helpful! It helps to know that even the experts need to stop and reassess sometimes. Thank you for sharing this with us!
Thanks for sharing Paul!
Sorry to hear the training didn’t go as planned, but hey, it sounds like you learning as you go like the rest of us. Cheering you on from afar my friend!
Been there and done that. Now im building up again nice and slowly towards next year 👌 Good luck with it.

Hey there!! Been missing your videos. Hope you are doing well. Merry Christmas!!
Good tip on making adjustments as you go. I think I’m coming to the same tentative conclusion in regards to overtraining. Any tips on good foods to eat to gain weight? Send some over here.
Thanks for watching, Sid! For me, all foods are good for gaining weight! 😆 But stick with lean proteins to stay healthy!
I hope you can bounce back pretty quickly to race mode.
Thanks folks, I'm easing back in!

Thanks so much Ben! I'll be back very soon with a plan that should suit the time I have available for training going forward! Keep pushing, my friend!
