Ok, I’ve been a diesel mechanic since I was a dumb 19 yo kid. I am 54 now. I work for Kenworth dealership for the last 21 years, so I’ve been involved with the emissions systems since they started reducing sulfur in diesel fuel to meet the EPAs very first reduction standards.
Here’s how your modern emissions systems work, EGR, recycles a percentage of exhaust gasses back through the intake to rebut the exhaust to reduce the amount of soot, in exchange it raises NOX.
The DPF IS A FILTER, and is designed to trap the soot produced from inefficient combustion of diesel oil, don’t get the DPF mixed up with the DOCs job is to raise the temp of the DPF so that it can “burn” the trapped soot to ash.
There is NOT an actual combustion event or fire produced in your exhaust system, ALL of these transformations taking place in the emissions system are chemical reactions that produce HEAT. The DOC or Diesel Oxidation Catalyst produces heat which is used in the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) to reduce soot to ash,
SCR was added a few years later to reduce NOX.
Remember that EGR increased NOX ? Well stricter EPA regs included NOX reductions.
So the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) uses DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) to catalyze NOX and break it down into 2 components, nitrogen and oxygen.
DEF fluid is 32.5% urea, and the remaining being nothing but good ol H2O (water)
DEF is highly corrosive so if you spill it, rinse it off, you have a leak, rinse it off. It will crystallize and can cause several problems in the system as it can block and reduce the flow of exhaust gasses etc.
Anyways, that’s pretty much it, reduced so people can understand what they have a little better.
    Having said all of THAT,
The “a person with means” this guy is talking about, literally means “a person with a shit ton of money to blow” because I PROMISE you this is bullshit.
I’ve had to repair emissions systems that drivers have accidentally filled the DEF tank with diesel fuel while refueling. As soon as the system calls for DEF injection to reduce NOX while driving, a fault code is triggered because the extra fuel being introduced by the SCR system will increase the amount of heat produced and tail pipe temps will increase.
    How ?
The wash coat in the DOC - DPF - and the SCR Catalyst, are the SAME. The fuel being injected by the DEF dosing valve WILL be catalyzed and produce even more heat, which WILL or could potentially melt the SCR Catalyst.
It WILL - not potentially but WILL cost you thousands of dollars to have parts emptied flushed and cleaned , replaced, and reassembled and tested.
DO NOT add “chainsaw gas” to your DEF tank. That is literally THE DUMBEST thing I’ve seen on TH-cam to date.
If you’re having problems with your trucks current emissions systems you have choices,
    Repair it
Sell it and buy a new truck or a used non emissions truck
    Or delete it.
I don’t recommend deletes simply because you can be fined thousands potentially, AND because without the CORRECT tuning you will damage major engine components like cylinder heads etc.
The choice is yours, I am just the messenger.

Lots of good information. You definitely seem to have plenty of knowledge and experience with these systems. How is the pickup running fine and no longer using DEF? You seem like a good person to ask

DEF and oil/diesel/gas mixture is really quite horrific, DEF contains a lot of water. Could be the DEF pump is shot or a clog in a line or the DEF injector. Scan it for codes and see what comes up, not all DTC result in a CEL, there may be some stored codes. More than likely the end result will not be good for the emissions system. And yes I wish you guys could too, I'm in Canada and won't be long until it's the same here. For all my commercial customers I offer a more discrete solution.. but it has to look good up top and underneath.

I looked it up once and found out that the DEF system is actually meant to eliminate nitrous oxides, not soot. All your system does to clear the soot from your particulate filter is raise the exhaust temperature so it cooks it off, much like you can clear some of the soot out of your oven by leaving it on as high as it can go. Of course, it (the DEF system) is an immature technology that adds unnecessary complications to your engine, reduces fuel economy, and is incredibly finicky and expensive to repair if something goes wrong with it, so it's still a terrible idea that does so little good for the environment, it's nowhere near worth the harm it does to the economy.

I’ve witnessed multiple pickups including mine stuck in burn and constantly putting out a chemical type smoke that was way worse than any pre DEF diesel Ive been around. And have had truck drivers not be able to haul loads for weeks at a time dealing with exhaust malfunctions. I personally think the more efficient a motor is the less emissions it creates but I’m no scientist so 🤷‍♂️

@@WreckingBall541 Well, just remember who it was that told our grandparents that cigarettes were good for you and definitely didn't cause cancer. And who it was that told people in the early 1900's that radioactivity energized the body and promoted health and wellness.

I wonder if that saw gas may have covered up or sealed a sensor and kind of locked it in to a reading that's tricking the ECU. This is interesting for sure.

I will stick with my 99 dodge with no emissions and 30 MPG all the new cars and trucks seam to have problems and I get annoyed when a sensor leaves me stranded we need to go back to the cars of the 70s and 80s when cars were cars and trucks were trucks instead of a status symbol
