- Today we share what you can expect to find inside an older mobile home attic. These roofs have some surprising features and it's interesting to get a glimpse of the hidden structures.
We are a DIY family trying to build a better life. We like to share projects and regular life updates. Our goals are to create a happy home, live healthy, develop our life skills, and see where our life leads us.
What I love about you renovating these mobile homes is that you are taking the time to create a safe and lovely home that people can live in. This brings me back to your Kokomo mobile home. I enjoy seeing the progress on the renovation since the majority of time, these shelters either end up condemned or in landfills. It’s nice to see this structure will have a life after its face lift.
😂
Happy Mother's Day Ashley!
yeah I always thought that's why when the wind blows it sounds like the roof is about to go & when a tornado touches down they crumble like a deck of cards
I know that it'll look great after you've done your magic Doug... have a wonderful mother's Day Ashley 🌹💖🌹
No wonder these MHs tear apart so quickly in a bad storm. So cheap! ❤️❤️🙏❤️❤️
Some friends bought a double wide about ten years ago. It has vented soffets. I was stunned! I’d never seen that on a mobile home, single or double wide. Mobile manufacturing techniques have gotten better over the years.
You actually have me inspired to remodel my 1993 mobile home! Thank you, watching you to help inspire what I'm doin
Happy Mother’s Day Ashley. Have a great weekend guys. ❤️❤️❤️
I live in Georgia. Parts of Florida and Georgia are often called Tornado Alley. Now I understand why so many mobile homes are destroyed by those winds. 2x2s rafters and roofs that aren't secured in-place throughout. Years ago I drove past a wreck on the interstate involving half of a double-wide being towed and a boat being towed. I couldn't understand how so much damage occurred to the mobile home when the boat remained on it's trailer. Now it makes sense. Happy Mother's Day Ashley!
Have a happy Mother's Day Ashley 🎉❤
Thanks for showing us what a mobile home roof looks like Doug😊
I have never seen inside a mobile home attic. Very interesting!
What a surprise! I’m always learning something.🌻🌴
Have a wonderful Mother's day Ashley 😊
Wow, never would’ve thought 2x2s! But it makes sense since they have to be transported.
I've heard that a lot of pre-1976 mobile homes had the walls framed in 2 X 2s as well, but the federal standards that kicked in that year required 2 X 3 framed walls and at least 3/8" of drywall on the walls (though apparently not the ceilings). I've also read that 2 X 3 framed mobile homes can be made to pass Florida's strictest hurricane codes with only 2 X 3s in the walls, but they need a lot of steel bracing and something strong like heavy plywood, stucco or cement board on the exterior. 2 X 3s don't have a lot of compression strength, but they do have a lot of tensil strength, which makes most of the difference in wind.
Happy Mother's Day Ashley💗⚘🌺🌷🌸💗⚘🌺🌷🌸💗⚘🌺🌷🌸
I have never seen the structure of a mobile home before. I'm surprised to see that it doesn't have sheathing on the roof and exterior walls and that it has 2x2 for the roof support rather than 2x4. It lasted this long so it must be good enough. Thank you for the video!
Good point about it lasting this long, it's in Florida so you know it's been through a few hurricanes since 1984.
A very Happy Mother's Day wish to you, Ashley! 🌷💐🌷 You're killing it down there with Doug and your children! A small world is a more perfect world. Be blessed!
Great info Doug! Ashley, have the best of Mother’s Day celebration, much love to all ❤🎉
Hope things all fall into place smoothly for you guys
It's always nice to see and hear you explain things. It will be so nice when you are done. 🌴
Happy Mothers Day Ashley! I love watching your children and their fascination with all things outside. Bugs, boating in your pond, working with Dad, Belles artwork (amazing talent)!! You’re a good teacher and an amazing Mother. Hope you have a really good day!💐🪴🥀🪷🌼🌿🌷🪹🌹🪺🪻Lol.
Hands down you are the best rebuilding mobilehome
Great video, Doug, I'm sure a lot of viewers got some help from it.
The extent and variety of your knowledge is remarkable, and it’s interesting to see .
I just watched yesterday's video waiting for the washer, wishing you would post a video. Thank you!
Happy Mother's day Ashley!!
Super interesting to see the dissection & hear the explanation of the ever-mysterious older mobile homes. It's a wonder the roof stays attached during storms! I look forward to seeing this rebuild.
I appreciate the short video update! We don’t NEED 20-30 min long videos (we LOVE them) but we really just wanna see what you’re up to! Ik making videos AND renovations can be a lot but we LOVE you guys for it!! Keep up the good work!!
Very interesting Doug! Thanks for sharing👍🏻
Happy Mother’s Day Ashley❤️
We have a metal roof on our double wide, but it is over the original shingle roof attached to pieces of wood. The huge benefit is the absolute quiet inside even in a large storm. This was very instructional.
You are so knowledgeable. I really enjoy how you explain the process.
Another video...YES
I'd go with the vaulted ceiling when you remodel it to give it the feeling of more space.
Some places vaulted is super important for snow pack.
Thank you so much for answering one of my burning questions about why electrical wires supposedly can’t be fished through mobile home ceiling spaces, thus allegedly requiring only the use of conduits or wires running up walls and across ceilings for post-manufacture light fixtures. I called BS on this myth, but everyone I spoke with (including my mobile home remodeling contractor) said it was impossible to fish wires. Of course, no one could/would tell me why! I’m very satisfied with learning my experience and logic were correct. Thank you, again. (FYI, I’m in SoCal so no need for a vapor barrier, except to hold up the old blown-in insulation from 1984.) PS: It’s wild that the metal roofs are only fastened along sidewalls and peak.
I am remodeling my mobile home and I have the same roof. I wondered ey the truess was so small. You have helped me a lot. I will be following along so I can take notes.
Happy Mother's day Ashley!! Doug Thank you for this information. Good to know!
Good info. Happy Mother's Day Ashley.
What a great weekend, back to back videos
I am learning so much about mobile home construction. It’s so interesting. Thank you for this overview.
Be well, be blessed ❤
Nice! I was watching something else but came here instead🙏😊
Thank you :)

Me too, wouldn’t miss y’all for anything ❤
Wow ! Thanks! I always wanted to know about ceilings/roof on my mobile hone, and that was well done !!!
Happy Mother’s Day Ashley tyfs hugs
Great info. Happy Mother's Day Ashley, Love the way you promote learning discovery... animals, bugs, nature with such a king spirit!
Thanks Doug, great series, looking forward to the rest.
Well...no wonder why the roofs blow off so easily during bad storms; they don't stand a chance in tornados and hurricanes. Glad codes have improved and made mobile homes are better now.
Getting to the nitty-gritty of it.
Happy mother's day Ashley!!!
Really interesting. I always wondered about the construction of this homes. Also it explains why mobile home roofs suffer so much in high wind situations. You’re a good teacher Doug.
Thanks for sharing, it's great that you are explaining the system for those that may need or want to do something similar.
First!!!
Truly enjoy following your channel.
Appreciate this info, I bought a new Clayton built 1995 16 x 70 back in April 1995. I've remodeled every room. Never did any ceiling work or replacing and have always wanted to know what it looked like. Curious to know what company built your home.
I just love you explain everything for those that haven't seen your past video's of redos of mobile homes have a wonderful day Doug and family God bless
I have a mobile home of a similar age that i plan on renovating. Some water damage unfortunately, but these videos you are doing are a great help so i know what to expect.
Watch out for that killer cockroach on the vent pipe !!, lol, 😅, also, I don't know if you're going to remodel this mobile home like you did in Michigan?
That was interesting!!! Hardly even attached 😳
Happy Mother’s Day Ashley. Blessings
So, this is why you here the tin popping so bad when a little wind blows. Wow, I’m astounded by this. I’m hooked on y’all’s videos. I love these types of vids. Great work!!
Thanks this was very interesting.
Excellent video Doug.
Thank you :)
I kind of like how simple these seem to be built. I hadn’t thought about snow load, but that’s probably important for people living in snowy climates. Something that I’ve wondered is why single-wide mobile homes don’t usually have an overhanging roof and double-wides usually do. It seems like leaks into the walls would be more likely without the overhangs. It’s something I’ve been paying attention to when looking at properties because the siding of the homes without overhangs is often warped.
That's very interesting! I didn't know those metal roofs aren't held down by not much more than Gravity! I know I've never seen that before! That was an excellent description of its goings on! Thank you, Doug, Ashley and crew! Thanks for the great content!
Great short! Happy Mother's day Ashley ❤
Thank you for sharing this information!
Thank you Doug for teaching us about mobile homes. You make a great instructor!
Happy Mother’s Day Ashley.
2x2 trusses? Ha! mine are made of popsicle sticks and Elmers School Glue.
Great video...Happy Mothers Day Ashley . I hope you have a wonderful day😊
Now i see why my trailer roof is so noisy when the winds blow, and honestly i always thought they were attached other then the edges of the trailer roof guess not, and thanks for sharing this imformation Doug, and happy mommy day lol😉💙👍😊...
Happy Mother's Day to you Ashley.
people can hate on mobile homes and they may not be the best, but sometimes people need a home and it's all they can manage. What gets me is how much lot owners charge to park a home. The lot rents have gotten crazy...It's a never ending stay poor cycle. I have lived in mobile homes and liked them. I have lived in shacks and liked them. I lived in a wonderful modern well built house and it was my least favorite place to have lived. I lived in a nice ranch style home...tried to give it some personality...it was ok. I like older houses with character and if the floors aren't level, I am ok with that.
Agree completely mobile homes are here to stay and dou g is showing they can be made better. The best way to go is to have your own land because like you said lot rent is crazy
Mine just went up to 585 😬 but it's still absolutely the most affordable by far. I'll take my mobile home over a 2k apartment or 900k house.
Hi Doug!❤ Thanks for the update!
That mobile home is a Florida home. My New Hampshire soul quivers in terror at the thought of 30" of snow on its roof.
I re did a double wide with the same style of ceiling. I made it a conditioned sealed attic and spry foamed the roof deck for insulation. It was very dirty work removing the old insulation.
good to see because I always wondered about the roof supports
Had to stop the video to really look at the engineering of those trusses.. very interesting. Was surprised by the metal not being attached but then any puncture of the metal could be a future leak…
Interesting differences between mobile home and stick built home construction.
Thanks for that...I'm learning as we go
Happy mother's day Ashley
Happy Mothers Day Ashley🎉❤
Well that explains why the roof makes that noise when a cold front or hurricane blows through. 😵💫
My roof feels and sounds like it's all just gonna blow right off in one piece during bad winds, drives me crazy very noisy hate it period, and my personal feeling is the roofing should had been attached in a better way to prevent this from happening and i also heard there's roof buttons that can be attached to prevent this from happening, and the more peak of the roof you got its even noiser,as i had a flat roof on one of my trailers and i never heard the winds hitting it,but the one i have now is really peaked and the sounds are awful 👎😕...
Very informative Doug…thanks for sharing 👍🇨🇦
2 Late , on #3 done it all! Hubby beefed it up! I didn't like the way they looked like toothpicks. And we roofed the 1/2 double wide & another singkewide after he attached the 2 togather. Poles like a pole barn hold the new metal roof on top.
I have always wondered how mobile home roofs were built thanks!
As always, good information.
Happy Mother's Day Ashley.
You’re going to turn this into a beautiful home… as usual.
Happy Mother's Day Ashley🥰
That's a great explanation and I'll bet it will be helpful to some of the people watching. There are some good reasons not to vent an attic space: less heat loss, less opportunity for insects and other vermin to get in and less vulnerability to fire. But it's so important to keep moist inside air out of such spaces that I'd be reluctant to put anything up there that involves piercing the ceiling, though I'm sure wiring can be perfectly sealed if the person installing it is careful. Those flexible HVAC ducts can leak at any time and probably the worst thing anyone could do is vent a bathroom fan into a space like that There didn't seem to be a huge amount of insulation in this roof and I wonder if blowing in more would a viable option; without any venting, there is no worry about the added insulation blocking any vents.
Interesting and it is little looking compared to a regular roof. Wonder how much weight it holds if a person is on it.
Mine is flat, I get up there to wrap my swamp cooler and use a snow rake. I'm careful, but it holds me fine.
I'm glad you did you are so smart I would trust you absolutely
Very informative. Thanks for sharing ❤❤❤❤
2x2s?? No wonder these blow away in a storm. Wow.
Yes! We moved into a double wide that had never been lived in before. Sure, it was 'new' but as we did some renovation, we quickly discovered most of the house was made with 2×3s.
Is this your current home in Florida that y'all have been working on? I may have missed the part of the video where you answer that.
@@meganrasey4377it a project house or flip house m. tge goal to renovate and sell. the original house is bigger and nicer
@@meganrasey4377 they have bought this property as a second project. We don’t know yet if they will rent it out or sell it. They are still working on their main house as well. It’s worth going back a few videos to catch up. They have been making great progress.
That’s why they are shit investments
I was thinking same thing!scary since o now live in a modular home (which imo is just a bigger trailer home) I definitely freak out during storm this sure don’t help!
Happy Mother’s Day Ashley❤️
I fiberglass mesh-taped the joints in my ceiling panels and then plastered them with standard wallboard mud. They came out awesome and can't be distinguised from a sheetrock ceiling.
Cockroach on the vent pipe is just killing me. That bad boy came into frame more than once with no reaction from whoever was being the cameraman at that moment. 😂😂😂
Always enjoy your videos! Never thought seeing the inside of a mobile home structure would be interesting, but you always explain details well!
Great job Mr Doug! Happy Mother's Day Ms Ashley
Thank you Doug! Have a blessed day!
The roach 🪳 at 2:54 was like wassup bro lol 😂 but I shared the video so I can have knowledge of this . I’m trying to redo everything. Thanks 🙏🏾I subscribed to ya
Cool video. Interesting to see what is up there 🌺
Good information! Thank you! 😃
Great informative video... Thank you.
THANK YOU, I WAS THINKING ABOUT REMOVING THE FLAT CEILING AND OPENING IT UP!!
I immediately stopped watching another TH-cam channel when I saw you had a video👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Would it be better to screw down the metal roof?
Sorry, it's just a short one tonight. Hopefully some people will find it helpful though. We should have a good longer video on Monday.
I did the same. I immediately clicked on the notification tab.
Me too! Doug & Ashley always take precedence!
I did too! Lol 😂
Me too, love this family and their principles and really talented renovation skills ❤! Get it Doug and Ashley!
