How to Make a Raised Faceted Star | Paul Sellers

  • The Lone Star motif has a direct appeal to Paul, from his living for two decades in Texas. But it is also a fine decorative eye-catcher for many furniture pieces, box tops and, so on that you might want to make too.
This project might seem complicated but, it is simple to make when you follow the steps Paul’s walking you through. Use contrasting woods as Paul did or just use pine with distinctive stripes. Both look good!

On the one hand I'm gutted that you lived an hour away from me for two decades and I didn't realize. On the other, I'm glad I've found you now and I'll definitely try my hand at some Lone Stars soon!

Paul, you are a treasure and you did our Lonestar justice. Just lovely. I did not know you lived in Texas but it seems to make sense to me after watching you for the last decade or so.

On the one hand I wish more people would watch Paul because this is old world knowledge most of us have either forgotten or never even known. On the other hand I'm glad he's not more popular because it means only people with actual passion for woodworking watch his content.

When Paul Sellers uses the phrase "my inaccuracies" I wasn't sure whether to feel confident or despondent about woodworking. There are times when you think I'll throw in the towel, but if a master can miscalculate there may be hope yet!

I'm impressed. Last year I made two stars with 4 points after I saw your videos about the stars. Mine were much bigger and I already struggled because the pieces felt small to me. This year I made a star with 5 points which I like even better. It's probably two or three times as big as yours. And it's just flat. I wouldn't know how to make that complicated geometry you show here. But now I might give it a try. Thanks for your videos. I'm not up to most of the things you create. But I very much enjoy your spirit and how you explain your work. This channel is one of the real gems on youtube.

I've tried several times and failed at making one these I've made quite a few four and five point stars ever since I first watched you making them, I don't have a bandsaw so I'll have to come up with another way of doing it. Enjoyed the video definitely going to try again soon .

Fun to watch the hand tool approach to make these. I made about 20 last Christmas and sent them out to family and friends as ornaments. Quite a different process as I used mostly power tools so I really enjoyed watching the way you make yours!

I like to use a mix of modern and old techniques. For example to make this I would use a powered plane for 95% of the shaving and more accuracy, and then do one final pass with my Stanley for the crispness you only get from the hand plane.

Any recommendations on cutting the pieces off the board without a bandsaw? Of course, just cutting down with a handsaw works, but it's hard to be 100% accurate that way, and then you're left with a lot of fiddly planing of the back of the tiny pieces.

You could if you really needed to, my digital calipers show .01mm increments. In this case the exact dimensions aren't that important, you could make it 5mm or 6mm and no one will notice.
