We will never get that kind of infrastructure investments in Edmonton, or between Edmonton and Calgary. Both Cities will claim they don't have the budget, even though property taxes have doubled in the past few years, as well as all these other taxes they've introduced, while pretending it's to save our environment, and yes I realize that tax is federal! Without a major investment from the federal government nothing will progress too much. Trudeau will never agree to put that kind of investment anywhere in Alberta purely because the majority of Alberta's refuse to invest in him.
Great job on the video Alina! Edmonton is actually a very cool place to visit, and to live as well! You were here at a quiet time of the year. As far as timing of your video, you missed the most vibrant time ever with the majority of festival after festival lasting from June to September! I'm so glad you did this video off season though! I know it was a lot of work to compile it, so I really appreciate it!
My sister lives in Edmonton, and we just recently went for the first time to visit (and film). Honestly, I've heard a lot of people smack talk it in the past, but we enjoyed up enjoying it! Is it the most exciting city in Canada? Definitely not. But it's got some pretty beautiful areas. It's also got a lot of really pretty "suburbs" with super nice houses. It felt like a really family friendly type of city to live.
I've been living in Edmonton for most of the past 15 years and love this city. There isn't a better place in Canada right now. But that doesn't mean it's perfect. We have far too many idiots on the roads who believe that the size of their pickup trucks gives them special privileges. We also have a homeless crisis and an opioid problem that is threatening to destroy the entire city. That's also part of th reason you don't see very many people downtown.
Nice video. The last time we were in Edmonton was 11 years ago . It was winter and it was cold. You’re right , the best time to visit is summer and falll. You have love those donuts. Sending much love ❤️ from Harriet Jim and Yuki

Edmonton river valley is amazing! I feel like I am in living in the country as well as living in a city. A lot of people don't like Edmonton because it's not touristy like Vancouver and Toronto but that's exactly why I like it! I don't want a million tourists here in this charming city lol.
I used to live in Edmonton and I quite liked it. Once you got to know how things work there, it's a city of malls. If you're looking for people to hang out with. That's where you go. Not just West Edmonton mall. They've got malls all over the place
Downtown Edmonton looked great with some wonderful architecture. A Blueberry 🫐 donut 🍩 sounds delicious 😋. Glad you were able to go to The West Edmonton mall which is a legendary place ! Most malls here in the states are struggling to stay afloat. Fascinating day Alina ! Thanks 😊
I just spent 2 days by the river in Saskatoon and was surprised how beautiful it was. The 2nd day I walked 9 miles in the river valley. lol Cheers from 2 Canadians living in Mexico. ✌🏽
I’m in St. Albert right now! Just beside Edmonton! It needs to have more going on for sure - I prefer Calgary - love the proximity to the awesome beautiful outdoors - but the sky is sure gorgeous!! I have family in both cities!! Terrific video!!
Subscribed because you are doing a fantastic service for your fellow Canadians. I always wanted to visit Alberta because of the Tar sands Canada has for lower-grade crude oil but Alberta might be a great place for a Vacation - my wife LOVES to Travel. Take care.
Note you never mentioned the UofA it's the biggest university and the hospital is the best transplant hospital in western Canada and the considered one of best kidney transplant hospitals in the world, also one of the best cancer research ,heart and children hospital in North America!
I actually never heard of Fawkes until this video because I don’t go to downtown a lot but now I’m thinking the next time I’m there I’m going there for a coffee.
I left the city in 2003. Best decision I made. Through the years I visited friends and family, growth has been stagnant. It's also a typical car-brain North American city, full of suburbs. No one walks or can reach anything by foot if you live in suburbs. But you're not wrong. The mall isn't that great from before. It was awesome in the 80's and 90's. The new LRT that runs from Millwoods is a blessing, but it's 30 years too late, and the one reaching West Ed will take another long time to finish. One thing for sure though. The people are great. I miss the multicultural aspect of the city. My friends parents came from around the world, as did mine, and I was blessed to have grown up with that surrounding during my time in Edmonton. But yeah, the city will never be for me anymore. But if you value a big affordable house, relying on a vehicle to get you everywhere, and the brutal winters. Then go for it! Another option is to purchase an affordable condo downtown, not own a car, and use public transportation or your feet to easily reach any amenity you need.
The city did get a little better around 2016 when improvements to the downtown were made. I would say that it is a typical car-oriented city ON THE SURFACE. It’s actually pretty decent with its transit compared to many American cities and even though it took years to fully build out the LRT, at least it actually built one! Many American cities have non-existent or worse rail transit systems. Taking transit is actually encouraged and promoted in the city. It still has problems, but at least it’s trying to overcome them.

That restaurant looks amazing! The decor looks very eastern European, and the pan-Slavic menu looks delicious. Your mum seemed impressed. I'd have ordered the borszcz to start and then either your chicken schnitzel or the goulash. Liverpool has a sizable Eastern European immigrant community (mostly Polish, but some Ukrainian, Slovakian and Baltic) but I haven't tried any of their restaurants yet - now I will. The thing I've always heard about Edmonton is that the megamall sucked the life out of the downtown centre - it took all the business and money away and left it empty and unsafe.
As someone who was born and raised in Edmonton and lives in the Downtown I should say that there are not that many more people on the streets even during the week. Before Covid there were more people downtown but during Covid so many people seemed to discover that working from home is better and have not returned and many of the stores and shops have closed. That being said the downtown is a good place to live if you can tolerate the homeless and somewhat troubled folks walking around.and one can get by without even owning a car. The nightlife is not awesome but it's OK and some really good restaurants and live theatre scene. There are more interesting and exciting places to live but it is probably more affordable than an lot of other options.
Not to be pedantic, but Alberta hasn't been getting the majority of immigrants. It is getting it's fair share, but the majority are still going to Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. What Alberta is getting is a ton of inter-provincial migrants (ie. Canadians.) that are fleeing Ontario and BC for cheaper housing.
Ilived in Calgary for 5 yearx my window overlooked the mountains I was born in Edmonton and I prefer Edmonton over Calgary, No nightlife because of a couple of things 1 Edmonton is the service hub for the oil sands so most people get up for work at 5 am, 2 university town they mostly get in trouble on White avenue lol. I never go to WEM anymore Thanks for visiting
I have lived in Edmonton for the past 15 years. Before that I lived in Calgary for 30 years. I prefer Edmonton. The only thing I miss about Calgary is the short drive to the mountains.

Based on the video I find it strange that the downtown was so empty. Was it a Sunday? Or really early? The street you were on where fawkes coffee is, usually always has something going on. Even Kelly’s pub had no one on the patio which isn’t typical in the summer. Other than it’s pretty quiet on the weekend (but so is Calgary in the core on the similar day and time you were in Edmonton). Especially when there are no events which looks like you hit a day with no events. 104 street has a farmer market on Saturdays and the car show the evening of July 13 and it was busy. The mural “Take a Risk. It’s the most Edmonton thing you can do” was one of the first big Edmonton murals and it was intended to inspire other buildings to take the risk and use their black walls as a canvas for art. (Which it did and you missed some really great art in downtown). It is also meant to spark the entrepreneur and creativity. You missed some really nice things in downtown, one being the river valley access… you mentioned the river valley which was great but didn’t show the funicular (mechanized walk way so people with disabilities or mobility issues can also easily access the river valley). Anyway I grew up in both Edmonton and Calgary. I also lived in Calgary in my 20s. I work in Oil and Gas. I have a video about 6 common misconceptions about Edmonton that I think is a good watch but my overall take between the cities is that Calgary feels more corporate a larger city and Edmonton has a small town feel to it. As for safety, I think the cities are similar. I know where the pockets of homeless people are too in Calgary etc. since the pandemic the downtown has struggled a bit. I live in downtown and I mostly enjoy it but it has some struggles
Especially at Winston Churchill square. There is almost always something going on there. Will be there tomorrow for taste of Edmonton. And having lived in Edmonton and Calgary, There was less doing in Calgary's downtown.
First thing I noticed are the empty streets! I live in greater Vancouver area, it's always busy busy busy, and to see empty streets like that is something I'm not used to. Even the suburbs are more busy where I live!
Vancouver has more people living downtown, that's why. In Edmonton the busy, popular hangout area is actually not downtown, but in old Strathcona across the river. Unfortunately they didn't show that in this video.
Is this recent influx of people to Alberta mostly from other provinces or from other countries? We have somewhat similar issue here in the Greater Toronto Area and the real estate prices really shot up. Plus the local and provincial government needed to spend money to improve the road infrastructure and transport services.
Thankfully you were in Jasper before the recent tragedy of the fire. I live in Edmonton, and it’s been years since I’ve been to Jasper, now it will be heartbreaking to visit.
@@AlinaMcleod yes, always preferred Jasper over Banff, it seemed so much more wild and untamed, also the overt commercialism of Banff is a huge turn-off.
Been reading."Canada will need to add 2.8 million homes due to projected 2021-31 population growth. Add this to the pre-existing shortage of almost 700,000 units, and Canada should add nearly 3.5 million homes between 2021 and 2031" The Federal government should have implemented this years ago to keep ahead of new imagration policies.
My city! Edmonton has its gems that many people don’t give credit for. Plus, for a major city in Canada, the cost of living is still rather low, for 2024 standards anyway.
There a many nice parts of this. But like the videos with Gordon (who is the witty guy) this has your other family member. The ones with Mom or Pop are just that much better.
Love your channel BUT every single TH-camr that bothers even coming to Edmonton always says the downtown is dead and never goes to Whyte Ave in the Old Strathcona neighbourhood which is the heart of Edmonton full of Restaurants, Pubs, Cafe's etc. It's Edmonton's version of 17th Ave for those who've been to Calgary.
You were walking around many of my old stomping grounds. Got me a little Nostalgic. I haven't been back in over 5 years. Downtown is not the place to be though. Whyte Ave and Strathcona East of the U Of A is were the scene is.
İn Ankara Turkey's Aspava Kebap Restaurants , soup price is 100 tl to 150 tl, Cow mince meat kebap with shepherd salad, greek salad , istanbul salad, tzaziki, 300 tl, desert comes free of charge, you can also drink tea many times free of charge. 1 usd is 33 tl, 1 euro is 36 tl. I planned to move next year my fried chicken restaurant business either in Edmonton or Calgary from Montreal because of obvious reasons the high taxes in Quebec and high rent in commercial property which is not feasible anymore for business.. hope to invite you when that times happen. Nice video.
If you're from Montreal you would like Edmonton a lot more than Calgary. Calgary is a giant suburb with single family houses as soon as you drive out of downtown. Edmonton has twice the amount of apartments and has a lot of great old ethnic neighborhoods. The food ,arts , entertainment scene is way better in Edmonton, including big concerts
Hmmm, Edmonton looks nice on your vlog. I came across your videos and watched the previous one too. You made me wandering how many times I drove Edmonton ring road... And it must be somewhere around 200!! And I never been to Edmonton! It kinda looks like Calgary minus mountains are to far away :) So why would you bother? And second thought - how Canada changed over last years if you as a well travelled didn't feel completely safe in Edmonton! I am an immigrant, I've been living in Canada for 12 years and who would've thought now I feel like my country Poland is much safer than some major Canadian cities. That's really horrible.
Apart from the downtown zombie apocalypse Edmonton looks great, the water park looks fun, an asset for the locals a city to live in if you can brave the brutal winter weather, an underground metro would help in the winter with transport, do they have one?✌️❤️🇬🇧
Edmonton is like Lethbridge, significant population but you wonder where all the people are because you don't see a whole lot of people around on the streets. Whyte Ave. is the place to go in Edmonton.
I lived in Edmonton from 1982-84 and again in 87-88. I moved there for a job. Looking at your video, the downtown core is a bit better than back then, but quite frankly, it still seems like a boring place for a city of 1.5 million. When I lived there in the 80s the populaion was about 700k so its grown a lot. One thing I found quite poor in Edmonton (vs Calgary) was the public transit system, especially the light rail network, which was far better developed in Calgary back then. Maybe Edmonton has caught up by now? I lived in Saskatoon from 1984-87 and quite frankly I liked that city more than Edmonton (or Calgary). In my opinion the best thing about Alberta is the national parks esp Banff, Lake Louise, Japser ad Waterton. The cties are ok but not really special.
I'll be moving back to Alberta in September! I've decided on Calgary (or possibly Lethbridge) instead of Edmonton. After living in Edmonton, I can say that it's a great price point, there are some very beautiful areas too, but there are some really scary parts and I find it to be a lot less updated than Calgary. Calgary has a lot more amenities BUT the price is MUCH higher than Edmonton. So Edmonton will always win people over with its price point for both renters and buyers. It can be a great place to start a new life or chapter in your life. Will be interesting to see what becomes of Edmonton with this incoming rush of people eyeing it as their next home or business investment opportunity! xo
@@TT-fq7pl I agree for smaller areas that want to retain their history and local charm, not for cities the size of Edmonton. What ends up happening when a larger city doesn't "keep up" is that really unappealing types of people are going to come and take over the city and crime rates go up.
@@lt8901 Don't crime rates always go up with population increases? And does Calgary really have a great deal more to offer than Edmonton in terms of amenities? They seem pretty similar to me, though only one of those cities had to go without water for a long spell due to infrastructure problems.

Love that you made a video on Edmonton. Awesome ❤
People go to Whyte Ave on the weekends, a vibrant spot across the river.
I have a big pickup truck so I should not move to Edmonton :)

Only if you don't live central. 118 ave ,Whyte ave ,Chinatown ,Ritchie ,124 st are all great alternatives to malls.
I disagree about the malls comment. I think it's a city of festivals. I guess it depends on where you choose to look for entertainment.
Thanks 😊
Yeah it’s such a shame malls aren’t doing as well as they used to. In Asia they are booming!
Beautiful tour video and the City is so beautiful ❤❤❤
I was out today in Old Strathcona and walking on Whyte Avenue and I had a blast. I’m visiting from Vancouver. Seems like there’s lots to do!
Garneau, Strathcona, and Oliver are probably the 3 best areas to visit. Downtown is improving though.
Absolutely! 💯 I was in all these neighborhoods today!!

I visited Calgary, Edmonton and Fort McMurray in 2014. Stayed there for a week. Nice and quiet city :)
We left the city Oct 2021, cheers from 2 Canadians living in Mexico. ✌🏽
Edmonton was dead on the nineties, so no surprise you have had mens, but since then Edmonton had grown a lot and is much more developed and beautiful.
Nice video Alina

Yeah the food was amazing! Well the mall is cool but I wouldn’t say it gets that insanely busy. There’s not much else around it.

Loving the Canadian series! When's the last time anybody got a tour of downtown Edmonton? Is Edmonton the next Phuket?

Sounds good to me and it's an absolutely beautiful place to stay ❤ take me there then 😀🙏

They all live in the burbs
Especially at Winston Churchill square. There is almost always something going on there. Will be there tomorrow for taste of Edmonton. And having lived in Edmonton and Calgary, There was less doing in Calgary's downtown.
Downtown is a wasteland of zombies and garbage

First thing I noticed are the empty streets! I live in greater Vancouver area, it's always busy busy busy, and to see empty streets like that is something I'm not used to. Even the suburbs are more busy where I live!
Vancouver has more people living downtown, that's why. In Edmonton the busy, popular hangout area is actually not downtown, but in old Strathcona across the river. Unfortunately they didn't show that in this video.
A very nice one, Alina!❤❤

Old Strathcona is a part of Edmonton that is worth a visit. It is across the river from downtown. More people hang out there than downtown.
Is this recent influx of people to Alberta mostly from other provinces or from other countries? We have somewhat similar issue here in the Greater Toronto Area and the real estate prices really shot up. Plus the local and provincial government needed to spend money to improve the road infrastructure and transport services.
It’s mainly from abroad but about a quarter was interprovincial mainly from Ontario lol

Where's your fried chicken restaurant in Montréal? I love fried chicken!
This lady should check out the central neighborhoods and the old main streets with the mom and pop businesses.

If this was filmed on the weekend of July 13th-14th, the reason why there isn't many people around is because they're all at the Calgary Stampede.
Apart from the downtown zombie apocalypse Edmonton looks great, the water park looks fun, an asset for the locals a city to live in if you can brave the brutal winter weather, an underground metro would help in the winter with transport, do they have one?✌️❤️🇬🇧
They have an above ground train line and I’ve heard it’s good but doesn’t cover everything

My city has changed a lot . And were working on making it better. Since the COVID things got a bit worse but working on,band it's getting better.
Will be interesting to see what becomes of Edmonton with this incoming rush of people eyeing it as their next home or business investment opportunity! xo
As the poet says, wealth is nothing but the absence of people.
@@TT-fq7plFirst of all, Edmonton already HAS the large population, that's why it's absolutely critical to keep up with cities that size otherwise it will just turn into some open air ghetto. I stand by my comment in it's entirety. If you think that Calgary and Edmonton are similar in amenities, I have to ask...Why are you here? Clearly you haven't been to either city lol. I don't get why you would comment if you've never been to either city. As for the water issues in Calgary, I'm not going to comment on that because....sighs...it would mean I have to explain that every city has water...and this is just too much.
@@lt8901 I don't argue with children who think that "lol" is a word. But I've lived in AB for thirty years, and I know both major cities well. You sound like a booster who'd be better off down south.
