Great convo! As an AB loyalist I always appreciated what a classy gracious loser GG was. After a loss you could tell he was pissed but he always interviewed and heaped praise on the opposition. One of the classiest athletes in all of sport. Good on ya George!
As an England fan, I was always scared when George took the field against us, as he was an unbelievable player! One of the best 9's to play the game and he's a proper lad off the field. Fantastic choice for a legend guest!
You guys are too young to know obviously. Gareth Edwards (Wales); Sid Going (NZ); Ken Catchpole (Aust.); Nick Farr-Jones (Aust.); Justin Marshall (NZ) were better halfbacks. Then you have this fantastic French halfback Antoine Dupont. Gregan had a world champion team around him, Noddy, Timmy, Jason, John Eales, Toutai, David Wilson, Rod Mc Call, Campo et al . It was a mark of how poor the halfback stocks were in Australia that he was selected for too long. His service from the base of the scrum was poor. Kept telegraphing which way the attack was heading through hesitating and then rarely delivered from the ground. The great halfbacks arrived and delivered. The simple call from the five-eight is ''left or right'' and the likes of Paul McLean, Mark Ella, Michael Lynagh had great hands to catch any errant service. That was their job. Halfback to deliver immediately. Not George. Which Way? George was his nickname. Thank God for the rest of the team. They were the real difference on the international scene.
George Gregan the Great full stop....DJ Haskell has got some great rugby stories. Love the Hask man & Lord Tinds. Payno as usual, the Rugby Encyclopedia. Awesome episode gents.
What people never realise, is that George Gregan 'that tackle bledisloe' Actually had the greatest tackle that is forever forgotten in the same game. When he put a charging Richard Lowe on his back. 70kg vs. 120kg prop. It was huge. It was at that point as a 11 year old I followed the Brumbies and switched to rugby.
GG is so impressive. Mature, intelligent, humble and clearly has strong relationships with rival players. As a kiwi I will probably forgive him for the Goldie tackle :-)
I've seen that mark and pass by Zinzan Brooke to Cully, and yeah GG missed the tackle, but pretty humble of Geo. to say "He looked like an idiot". George Gregan was as far from an idiot as it is possible! A legend of the game. Respect 🏴. The Wallabies were a smart, educated, intelligent side on the whole during those late 90s ealy 2000s years. "The Game of the Century 2000", don't think you realise what an impact that game still has on the public, even soccer fans! (also GG does some great impressions of people , eg Eddie Jones, Justin Marshall! Crack-up!) Great interview thanks.
Wish I could give several ‘likes’. Always loved seeing GG play. Never seen him interviewed, seems like an ace bloke and what a memory he has! BTW, Hask needs to keep off that laptop; half the time, he looks brain-damaged.
The top rugby nations have an integrated system for producing great players from the grassroots up, the essential byproducts of which include facilities, rugby socialization and family interest at the club level, development of officials and administrators, fundraising acumen, media interest and expertise, commercial opportunities, knowledgable fans, and healthy competition. That’s what Gregan is talking about when he uses the term ‘pyramid.’ The wider the base, the stronger and more effective the pyramid is in developing world class players. Australia lost that, and suffered for it. Other rugby countries, like Canada, never built the pyramid and are now regularly losing to up and coming rugby countries that did.
But Gregan, who was an elite player, doesn’t mention the other 90% of rugby players who play at other levels every weekend. He doesn’t mention college or university players who play very short seasons for the love of the game. He doesn’t mention the volunteer referees, coaches, administrators, and board members who make rugby happen. Without those people, who make up the fan base buying tickets to watch players like Gregan, the system collapses. The pandemic punished those people unnecessarily. I wonder how, or if, Tindall, Haskell, and Gregan provide support to those folks now that they have the stature, time and money to do so.
Probably my favourite pod yet. Gregan is one of my favourite players ever and he didn’t disappoint on here at all
A Magican , he was the Magic Johnson equivalent to basketball-Rugby , the passes he made under tackle Ridiculous, Top 5 Greatest Player of All Time!!

Great interview thanks.
I love how Japan is becoming a proper rugby nation
I laughed when GG says that Eddie Jones would listen if you challenged him. What rugby coach would not listen to GG? Great guest.
George does a really good Jones Impression lol
3:52 Tindall's stops talking and the interview actually begins
Just want to know what Gregan's skin care regime is. He looks better now than he did when he played.

Dan Luger at the death right in the corner one handed. I remember it like yesterday.
Very eloquent
Before Aaron Smith there was George Gregan
I'm an 🏴 fan but I see Gregan as an all-time great. He's way too often overlooked in World Best XV selections imo.
In my generation, been watching since late 90s, I would only ever name Aaron Smith as the only contender to GG, but GG takes it for me
George Greegan doesn't age...
Black don't crack !
