Still cheaper to buy flat bar and copy the holes and drill. Coming from a mech. Engineer

Like they did mention if you heat the steel there can be a change in grain structure around the holes which tends to corrode more readily. I suppose as long as your doing some sort of passivation step after it would be just as good. I would assume with a water jet part it would be important to passivate the part too, I didn't hear any mention of it. Typical water jet services aren't that expensive its nice sometimes to drop it off and have it done right sometimes when you have a lot going on.

@@met9009 Most shops will punch the holes rather than drill them.

@@todddunn945 Wow this is an old post. No matter how a hole is made it makes free iron atoms, this will speed up any corrosion that will happen. Its always still a great idea to passivate. I have been out of the game for a number of years now. My experience has been machine shops, even the shops with whole sheet metal fabrication facilities. When things like chain plates came thought the door first thought lay it out and put holes on a bridgeport or such and get it done. It normally wasn't too many parts and tended to simple and quick to bang out. If there was a curve if you punched the holes first makes bending any shapes harder, if you load a curved shape in a vice it can be supported and holes drilled. There are always a bunch of way to do things. Its starting to come back setup time on the punch machines took some time, normally they were used for production in a lot of cases. At the end most one off it was super quick to draw up something quick and blow it out on the water jet. Even when they were setup for production, could find a bit of clear table jump in do the parts and be done.
