Love the tutorials, but it makes me nervous running the sewing machine over the pins.

You don’t need pins. Use some purple glue stick or few drops of Elmer glue to keep the fabric in place instead of pins. You can iron to have the glue hold better and faster.

I always leave my pins in. Have done it that way since I was 13. I'm now 63. I guess it comes down to what you are comfortable in doing.
