F40 every single time. Yes, the TDF has a symphonic V12 mated to a incredible gearbox, but the F40 is old school at its absolute best. Four wheels, two seats, a gated manual gearbox, and a glorious Twin Turbo V8. Forever a legend 🤘
That feels backwards a TDF is a TDF but the F40 is Ferrari! Ferrari was always about the racing more than the street cars. It is the most Ferrari street car they ever produced. Outside of that you have to be in the FXX program to get the race car experience.
That F40 is so gorgeous and when I see the F40 and F50 together I want to cry. My childhood was dedicated to cutting out all the pictures I could of those cars from the Dupont Registry.
@Mr JWW : TDF Over F40 I think. 1 V12, 2 F40 is very high value but TDF is probably quite badly underappreciated. 3 They are quite rare, a very special version of a great car. The F40 is amazing and looks fantastic. But I would stick with the TDF.
F40 - just so that one day you can say you owned one. F12tdf - stunning stunning car - but the chances of owning one again if you wanted vs the F40.... ? Do it !
It might not have the crazy loud V12 soundtrack BUT the F40 is THE Ferrari's ultimate supercar, the way it stances, the wheels, the insanely agressive design for it's time, the driving focused cabin, the unusual turbocharged engine to be fitted in a supercar at the time.....just genius stuff by the maranello people !
The best car ever made for sure! Interesting fact, the first 15 or 20 F40 made in 1987 had more than 650hps and less than 1100kg, and has the maximum speed above 370km / h, before passing the transit rules at the time! They say that Ferrari hides this fact not to depreciate the other F40 manufactured later, knowing that these manufactured first are rarer and faster! Great content as always mate!
This F40 reminds me so much of an Abarth 500. Unpractical seating position, turbo sound, single-turbo kick, incredible sound, light weight, minimalistic interior and you can floor it without going too fast. It's a busy little bee as well, so in my opinion - not worth the price LOL, buy an Abarth.
Just incredible & remarkable way how you talk about the cars James. You’re one of the finest lifestyle icon youtuber currently on this planet 🌎 keep it up mate👍 much love from India 🇮🇳
YES! I'm sorry, the TDF is epic but the F40 is a different level, it's the poster on the wall of millions of children, it's styling is incredible, timeless, iconic. I've watched 2 minutes of the video but I was typing this before the video started playing. Do it! DO IT!!!
TDF is the easy choice imho. Only F50 would make me think about a change with it, being a project of building a road car with as much F1 tech back then as possible.
In the other two videos you spent arround 10 min each. In this one 17 min. Thats your answer. Emotion, feeling, sense of ocations, a true legend. If your can aford it, is a must. Great content @mrjww, the best for far¡¡¡¡ greatings from spain¡¡¡
The F40 is of course a motoring icon. A dream for any enthusiasts. Unfortunately we sometimes have to be practical. You'd probably continue to get a lot more use out of the TDF than an F40. Just ask Sam. As beautiful as his legendary blue F40 is, he doesn't seem to use it very often.
Personally, I love seeing all the reactions of people turning their heads at the car. I wish more YTers drove their cars through town first to get some reactions!
Proper analogue car, I’m 18 and drive an old mgb, nothing in comparison but has the same dainty non power steering and the same raw throttle response from the twin carbs, I hope one day to have that feeling matched by one of these in such a visceral but obviously far more dramatic way
I think James now knows why the F40 is known as the greatest drivers car ever made. There are & will be quicker cars made. But there will never be another car that will be like this again.. F40 every day of the week. Could never get bored of driving a F40 everyday.
F 40 for sure, and just blast trough the turbo power delivery band, to really get the "kick and pull" of the spooled turbo's this 3 car journey is epic, well well done
F40 is one of the most iconic and coolest cars ever made but, I personally beleive TDF is the greatest car of modern era. You should keep the TDF as its my dream car. Its the all round capability of TDF without any compromises, which facinates me. I hope that you will be able to own the TDF, F40 and Carrera GT at the same time. That would be a dream life. Lot of love from Pakistan 🇵🇰
As the late, great Ferrari F1 driver, Michele Alboreto said “it’s a race car that can be used for the road”. Fantastic video this one. Loving the Ferrari content and your thoughts on driving these.
Analogue supercars like this are perfect in my eyes, as time goes on these analogue beasts become ever more appealing. Things like the F40/50, CGT, 993 GT2 etc... Love these cars. Need that euro millions win ASAP
As cool and iconic the F40 is, I’d rather own the TDF, it's a lot more usable in the sense of road use and for road trips. The dream would to own both and purely use the F40 for track days. And revving the life out of that V8 Turbo.
Recently heard the F40 engine described by a Ferrari mechanic as just like two turbo charged motorbikes sitting side by side. Small displacement. But light enough and powerful enough to be just outrageous. When I think about the sound of this car now that statement kind of makes sense.
I seen a few of these on car shows and Ferrari events and such things, but the coolest F40 sighting for me was when one was coming the opposite direction in traffic on normal roads outside of Trollhättan in Sweden, some time in the late 90:ies. And it had Dutch number plates! Imagine driving an F40 from Holland to Sweden and back! What a hero! I was 13 when it was launched and remember the fuzz it made from the car mags at the time, even the weird prototype (the 288 GTO Evoluzione) that proseeded it. Btw, The F40 was my fifth 1:18 scale model, that I got in 1989. I feel SO old now.
F40 or TDF, what a question, that’s a video you need to make James having experienced them both. Us mere mortals can only base our decision on their looks and what we’ve heard about them.
Thats definition of Ferrari.Raw,red, fast, beautifull and so passionate you fell in love it cant get out of your head.Time before regulations took soul out of cars
It has a 120 litre fuel tank, and can get 33mpg on an open road. Ultimatespecs also says 29mpg in the city, which seems cap beyond cap. Could it be that lean on fuel? I'm forgetting how light it is, considering it's motor
She's the ONE ... i always wanted Her ... going back to my Youth ... i have magazines ... posters & Models of HER Beauty ... She is ICONIC ... Of ALL the modern Ferrari’s, the TDF is probably my favourite, but to swap a TDF for a F40 is a very difficult choice as the F40 along with 288GTO are my favourite classic Ferrari’s. I’d have to toss a coin to decide but I know with either, I would not be disappointed.
Iconic cars. 250 gto F40, Enzo and la Ferarri. The rest are fantastic. So do you want to own an Iconic piece of Ferarri history. If you have the opportunity then 💯 absolutely. Unfortunately the roads around Sevenoaks you could not explore the F40. Fantastic mini series of the F40 to the Enzo. Great that Ferarri Sevenoaks has given us the viewing. Push the button on the F40 . Bravo James 👏
You didn't do a justice to Enzo and F50 by not placing the camera by Dashboard view like you have in this video.....That Camera Angle leads us to a whole new experience of virtually drive the car🙏👍❤️ Obviously i am liking F40 video more than previous two video but you should have done it that way....." The Camera Angle"
A true driver's car. No driver aide's, no GPS, no touch screens, barely any creature comforts. And who needs a radio with that orchestra behind your head!?
F40 because it’s pure old school excitement, and has no technologies to spoil / overwhelm the driving experience. The TDF is amazing as well, but F40 is as good as it gets.
Honestly if you have the money you’d be insane to not buy a good quality low km F40 right now. You could own it for one year or 60 years and never once worry about selling it for less than you bought it for. Cars have transcended their performance and are now 100% about the ‘personality’ of the car. A 1987 F40 and a 1995 FD RX7 (and every car similar) are going to experience an exponential growth in both the number of people who can afford them and who want to be able to say they’ve owned that car they had on their wall growing up. Take it from someone who rides motorbikes - I promise you that there is absolutely no scenario any ‘normal’ person can come close to utilizing the performance of the top tier of cars can offer. And as our generation grows up our rich peers will learn this and go for style or character instead. Add to that the transition from ICE to electric and you’d be crazy to not fill a garage with the finest the last 20 years had to offer
The ideal garage mate would be the P4... however, with so few examples in existence, and equally few continuation replicas, its only an option for a tiny few.
F40 vs F12 TDF? This might me a unpopular opinion but I feel like they are used for very different things! You wouldn't throw a F40 at a racetrack necessarily, but you can take a TDF anywhere, and even into the rain if you had to. They just satisfy different urges, so it's just a case of where your priorities lie, do you want arguably the best driving car being the TDF, or do you want the history, and emotions etc. of a F40, there is alot of good driving cars nowadays which would make the F40 a better choice. However for me I'd go for the TDF, I want my cars to be used in most situations, it just doesn't feel good to let them sit, just because it rains, and especially older cars tend to not take sitting around very kindly.
Get a f40 instead of the cgt (and keep the tdf). Tom has a cgt. To be different, get the f40 (the more iconic car too imo)! Already imagining the road trip scenes down to monaco in one of these.
What a stunning automobile and truly breathtaking, but if it were going to be my money that I were actually spending….it would be the TDF every day of the week. Your F12 is just an engineering masterpiece.
F12. F40 has a hype like the manuals and JDM among hipsters. That's a "flavour of the month". All limited production petrol cars will become valuable in the electric vehicle era and F12 will bring tremendous value both from investment and driving perspective.
I don’t think it’s even close. TDF is a hotted up series production car. F40 is a truly special car. Of course it depends how you would like to use the car. With as many options as you have in the stable F40 makes sense. It’s a car you hand down generations with a clause in your will that it stays in the family.
All time favourite car is Ferrari F40. This is the ultimate drivers car. We all should thank Ferrari for the F40. If it haven't been for this amazing car we will most likely not have the supercar competition between all the manufacturer to day. If ever had the chance to only drive that car for 2 minutes my life will be completed ❤️ Ferrari ❤️
F40 is an icon and a riot...but the TDF also rivals it as being one of the best Ferraris ever, while having the exact same attitude of the F40 but in a more practical shape, with a screaming V12. Even the price of the 2 justifies what I'm saying. I'd have a major problem choosing

This is more special than the TDF. In a TDF you're driving a Ferrari; in an F40 you're driving an F40.
Damn perfectly said

Real talk
That feels backwards a TDF is a TDF but the F40 is Ferrari! Ferrari was always about the racing more than the street cars. It is the most Ferrari street car they ever produced. Outside of that you have to be in the FXX program to get the race car experience.
Thats a very good way of wording it! Perfectly worded
You need to bring back the Modern Classics series
That F40 is so gorgeous and when I see the F40 and F50 together I want to cry. My childhood was dedicated to cutting out all the pictures I could of those cars from the Dupont Registry.
F40 every day, you'll never get bored of it and is guaranteed to put a smile on your face each time you get in it

F40. Will you ever get bored of driving it? I know I wouldn’t.
Only an F50 or Carrera GT could make the F40 seem boring.
F40 - just so that one day you can say you owned one. F12tdf - stunning stunning car - but the chances of owning one again if you wanted vs the F40.... ? Do it !
never been a F40 fan and not seeing that change any time soon. I am a 550/575/599/F12/812 fan so I would definitely keep the TDF

WOW
Not true. There were 650 bhp Ferrari cars before the F40. Those were the prototypes called GTO Evoluzione. Only 5 were built.
I miss my F40...
That was a great dream.
The legendary F-40 is an iconic raw power automobile a masterpiece, Scuderia Ferrari.

I have owned a XJ220 and driven an F40.. my vote is for the F40, more expensive to buy but a simpler car so probably less expensive to maintain

Probably unpopular, but I’d prefer an F12 TDF over an F40 any day of the week. Modern, screaming NA V12.
F40 with its turbo engine and exposed carbon was 35 years ahead of its time
The F40 was the last car personally approved by Enzo Ferrari himself. Need I say more?
Niiice. Just need a GTO and you’ve done the lot
As much as I love, respect and admire the F40, the TDF just has that extra 'ooomph' of pizzaz that pushes it over the top (for me)!!

F40 as it is unquestionably the pinnacle of what Ferrari is about, and like you said James, it’s steeped in history and automotive folklore
