Nicko actually used the Somewhere Back In Time Kit to record The Final Frontier. He used The Final Frontier Tour Kit to record The Book of Souls and he used the black Sonor Sq2 Legacy Kit to record Senjutsu. Thank you very much for this Episode 🙏
It's so hard to find anything on Nicko's kits. This is amazing. Nicko is one of my favorite drummers from way back in the 80's. I found Shanes channel about 3 years ago and watch all the time. I found this channel when you did Lars drumsets. Amazing channel you have and yes, thank you for the documentation of all of the kits from our favorite drummers! Such a huge thing!
I never knew Shane was such a maiden freak. For me, I always associate Nicko with Sonor. Something about the sound of those drums on the first six maiden albums that he played on.
My main snare back in the day was a Premier Project One. It was a 7x14 drum with die cast hoops and the inner “ floating shell.” It had a hole with a rubber gasket for a mike to be placed in. I used a black Remo fiberskin head on the batter side because of the durability. That drum absolutely screamed in a live situation. The best snare drum I ever owned. This was an awesome podcast by the way.
Oh man that snare drum musta killed anyone front and center. Those snares are unlike any other I’ve seen. How about the heavy rock 9 brass/birch super sized snare drums from the 1980’s.? Or the premier black shadow. There are two of those for sale down the highway for 300 and 850.
Thanks Bart and Shane for such a deep dive on Nicko's drum gear. I got into Maiden back in 1985, and it was Nicko and his style of playing along with his drum set ups, that got me into playing drums. Such a great podcast, so informative and educational. Continued success to you both in your future works. I am looking forward to seeing Maiden again (and the drum set up) in Dublin in 2025. Greetings from Ireland!!
I've seen Maiden 5 times over the years. My first time was my very first big concert when I was 10. I got to see them on the World Slavery Tour. The last time I saw them was a couple years ago when their newest album "Senjutsu" came out. I don't know who their sound guy is but Iron Maiden are by far the greatest sounding live band I've ever heard!
Awesome to see Shane talking about Nicko's kit. I was recently back in England and was at his drum shop in Manchester. I remember the Premier Signia kit, used to have posters on my drum room walls with him on that kit. I talked to Bruce Dickinson in Scotland about Nicko. Keep Rockin' the passion guys! DC
Wow! So far the best episode I’ve seen. Anything Nicko plays sounds great. He is the master metal drummer. Glad to see Shane is a Nicki fan his huge shop is amazing and is a mail order masterpiece. They get your stuff to you quick and for good price.
Regarding counterweights. I saw an interview with Nicko where he said that Sonor had to go back and find some old stock and he got what was in a box somewhere.
I mentioned this in the last video’s comments section, but I got to film an interview with Nicko for Modern Drummer backstage at the start of the American leg of the Legacy of the Beast Tour. The kit he used on that tour is absolutely beautiful and when you’re up close you can’t look away from it. It’s by far my favorite Nicko kit and the stained glass gong is breathtaking.
I saw a video of the first kit British Drum Co made for Nicko, it was like a brownish snakeskin design or something like that? But, as I remember, never to be used on stage. Thanx guys! As a big Nicko fan ( I first met him at the Frankfurt Music Fair in ´97, playing a tiny Premier kit with his blues trio at the Marshall booth, telling jokes, having fun, doing q&a and enjoying it. One of the kindest and funniest persons I ever met! ) I watched both whole episodes... amazing! 👍 Big TANK YOU!
Very good video.👍 I figured I would mention. The Brave new world kit is a Royal Purple color, not blue like Shane mentioned. Also the ships bell is for the song ' The Rime of the ancient mariner ' during the slow middle section of the song.
Thanks Bart & Shane! I’m not a huge I.M. fan but fascinating to hear & see these amazing kits. Re: copper plating, I believe KeithMoon’s last tour kit had copper plated hardware, (looked like gold at Maple Leaf garden)
Both Blaze albums are fantastic. And the drum sound on The X-factor is so good. Sharp and modern sound. Still sounds like this to me. I did see both the tours with Blaze in Scandinavia Norway/Sweden and it was really good. Up the Irons 🤘💪🤘
Lots of random thoughts here so I’ll try to keep it short. At 1:14 you see the catalog for the replica kits from Premier. They were to make 6 different ones starting with the black and white one from the give em ed til your dead tour. I thought they were to make 10 of those for starters although I can’t say for sure. I know of 3 and I remember seeing 2 on eBay through the years. I have one, my friend in Argentina has one and a guy named Rod Sovilla on TH-cam has one. My friend in Argentina has #1 which is the one Nicko played as a promo. If you remove the bass drum hoop on the resonant side I believe(might be the batter side)you will see the number on the wrap at the top. I have #13 which I can’t quite figure out if they only made 10. Not sure which number Rod has. Maybe they were going to make 10 total in the 6 different tours, although it still doesn’t explain the #13 that I have. I have seen the "A matter of life and death" tour kit on TH-cam at some point so I know that one is out there, the others I can’t verify except that Nicko likely has one of each. My Eddie kit as I refer to it is a wrap and not painted. The Eddie kit comes with a black snare drum with "Iron Maiden" in white , only Nickos is white with the black font as pictured in the video. I believe right after Premier rolled these out they ran into some sort of business trouble and never made any more of the replicas. Premier also made an Aces High snare drum in limited runs, as well as the Nicko Sycho sicamore snare drum which I also have one of. My friend in Argentina has the Eddie kit, the Book of Souls kit and has just ordered the Senjitsu kit. I won’t disclose any pricing but you could buy a nice car for the price of the Book of Souls kit 😳. The bell you see above the gong is played on Rhyme during the Flight 666 tour I believe. You can see a close up of Nicko playing it during the middle of the song where I believe he does some of his best cymbal work! Thank you guys for your hard work on this and all the nerds that stayed with me through this "I’ll keep it short" post 🤘🏼😎
Great video! I think there is a slight discrepancy as to when Nicko started using the Reflector series. It officially appeared in 2008, if I remember correctly. But while attending a concert in Poland in 2005 at the Mystic Festival, I noticed that Nicko had different cymbals. And they were the Signature Reflector + 17" Rude crash/ride. Of course, their sound blew my mind and I think these are the best cymbals Paiste makes. Either way, great material, especially for Nicko McBrain fans.
I saw a kit tour video here on TH-cam that Nicko did when he returned to Sonor. He said that when he went to the Sonor factory to discuss them building him a new Sonor kit that he told them that he wanted the big counter weights on the end of his boom stands like he had on his previous Sonor boom stands back in the day and they told them that they had discontinued them many years before but Nicko said he got lucky because they found a bunch of extra ones in a room in the Sonor factory so they did them up for him to match the theme of the kit...
1:24:05 - The hardware on that 'The Legacy Of The Beast' kit isn't really completely black, though: It's a actually 'Smoked Chrome' and thus still has some shine to it. Nicko says in the kit tour video on the Sonor Drum Tube channel that properly black hardware would've taken away from the artwork on the shells. And while I'm not a _massive_ Maiden fan, I've watched that particular video many times over the years, mainly because of his lovely personality 😊
Shane, Bart, you note Nicko and the band 'flying their UK flag'. Shane, you could confirm this: The connection to Sonor has a strong UK connection. After WW2, the Link family fled East Germany and relocated to West Germany to the British-controlled sector. The Link family approached the British and asked if they could have the British barracks for their factory. The British said yes and that is the Sonor factory to this day, I believe.
Thank you SO very much both for this documentary and the wealth of valuable information in the 2 episodes! I would like to share this information: I think in the last years Nicko has lowered his toms and the angle is not so steep! Interesting! I wish you health and hapiness! Greetings from Athens, Greece!
The Vienna show is not the same kit as the Real Live kit- it had four standard factory sized Signia power toms instead of the full lineup of eight square toms. There is evidence to suggest that this is the kit is the one that he used to record The X Factor- there is a photo of him in Barnyard Studios from around the time of the recording with either the 10x12" or 11x13" tom on his lap.
On the Legacy Of The Beast tour he actually used 3 different gongs. A black one for the first few songs with the war themed stage, then the stained glass painted one for the middle section of the show with the church stage and finally a red gong for the last part of the show with the purgatory stage. Poor roadie had to switch them during the set, propably two of them weren't even used during the show. Also there were different bass drum front heads, or rather decals for the second part of the tour. The Samurai head was actually a decal that was removed after the first song. The ship bell was only above the gong for the song Rhyme Of The Ancient Mariner. So only on the inital Powerslave tour and the Somewhere Back In Time tour. At least that's what I think.
Premier Series were originally offered in 5 shells as they basically merged the Signia, Genista and Gen X lines into one series - birch and maple had supported shells that were 4ply with 4ply re-enforcement rings or unsupported 6ply shells for both. Then the gen x was the birch/maple sandwich shell (2ply birch outer and 4ply maple inner)
To confirm timelines here, Premier percussion limited basically stopped in around 2008 and the company was bought by a UK businessman and it became Premier Music International. So from 2009 all products were made abroad and the old Leicester factory had stopped in 2008. The partnership with Keith became end of 2011 and it re-established UK production, however the Elite series remained being made abroad throughout. Keith was head of R&D for Premier.
I remember that red Marquis kit DID have the die cast hoops on it. You have to remember that Premier’s die cast hoops are very sleek and slim compared to the typical Tama, Pearl, etc. die cast hoops and don’t add that much more weight versus a triple flanged hoop. In the grainy, somewhat distant photos you’d be really hard pressed to be able to tell the difference.
Also, the 2010 reissue Genista was offered in both birch and maple, so they did offer birch as well. These were their mid range line under the Elites and replaced the old Artist range which was offered in both maple and birch (hence why the reissue Genista was). Fun fact for you, the maple Genistas are the bigger seller…
The video for Wasting Love is very funny because Nicko is on his version of a down scaled kit... A 5 piece Phonic Plus kit with the same amount of cymbals as he would use on stage lol
They didn't mention that when Nicko left Premier to go back to Sonor, the Gold kit had a Aztec theme art to it, with Aztec calendar on the front of the kick drum,
Great job Shane & Bart! If you want more info on Nicko’s current kit, here is an interview I did with him for British Drum Co last year. Cheers, Matty - Percussion Discussion Podcast th-cam.com/video/VyweWJQKVNI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=UnZv25TOzdAF38Os
I can't shake the impression that here it was more about how the drums looked and not how they sounded, but otherwise I enjoyed the show because I'm interested in everything and the small details when it comes to drums.
The 20" Novo, isn't that a RUDE as well? I have one in an 18" and I was under the impression, without checking of course, that the Novo China was a RUDE only cymbal? BTW, RUDE is where it's at for a heavy hitter! Ever since the Z's went away, RUDE's have been my longest lasting cymbals, ESPECIALLY in regards to splashes. I had a 10" RUDE splash for over 20 years lol. When I sold it, it was still solid, but it's been a looong time, but I seem to remember that splash having blue writing on it, like Paiste 400 or something? But it was absolutely the asthetics of RUDE, perhaps I had a very early splash? It was like 90 to 2009 or so that I had that thing. Of course by 2000 it had no label left on it, but I swear it was a blue color, and I don't remember seeing rude on it anywhere. Now, my 8" splash was your standard white rude logo, and other than the logos, the 2 matched perfectly, but I can't get that blue "400 I'm pretty sure" outta my head, on a clearly RUDE cymbal for some reason.
Depending on who is touring and the drummer and the drum trunks it can vary from 1 head for all to as small as just primary drums. One drummer I know keeps a box of each head including resonance ones with the merchandise.. only cause it’s 8 boxes…
Oh, Shane. I've got to disagree with you on the flanged hoops. God it's hard to see, but I'm here on my 34" 8k ultrawide, screen shot and zoomed lol "not really" and on the 1st pic of the red kit.. looking at the screen, look at the 14"? tom, the one all the way to the left, and you can sort of use the light reflecting, to see that it's curled over on top.. the rim I mean, to those not paying attention lol. You may be right, and he hates die cast hoops about as much as double bass lol.
f me, I dunno, now I can see where IN THE SAME PIC it could just as easily be flanged hoops lol.. I know in the last pic when yall are talking about the DW hi hat stand, they're flanged, so crap... I dunno.
On his white Premier kit, he's playing ebony ambassadors on the reso side of the toms. But weren't Premier's heads rebranded Remo anyway? Oh, and as I'm typing this, you point out the ebony's Shane lol, cuz of course you wouldn't miss crap like that duh.. lol. When we gonna get to see them DW's of yours again bud?
Nicko’s ride cymbal placement deserves a multi part podcast.
I have my cymbal setup exactly the same way. And no, its not a Nicko tribute kit.
Nicko actually used the Somewhere Back In Time Kit to record The Final Frontier. He used The Final Frontier Tour Kit to record The Book of Souls and he used the black Sonor Sq2 Legacy Kit to record Senjutsu. Thank you very much for this Episode 🙏

regarding the ship's bell: it is part of the drum kit only on tours where the set list includes the song "The rhyme of the ancient mariner"

Yup! Same video he told, they won´t give him a 6" Tom, "...oh, we don´t produce 6s anymore!" .... and Nicko replied "Now you do!" 😂😂😂
Incredible details, great episode about my favorite drummer!

If you watch The Be Quick Or Br Dead video, he is using the gray and black Sonor kit.
Awesome jobs loved every sec of it ❤❤❤🥁🤟🏼🇨🇦
Nicko did use the 7x14" Signia snare at least on the "Raising Hell" concert film, it can be clearly seen in the video.
AWESOME BIG THANKS FROM SWEDEN
