"From life-changing technologies to iconic cultural moments, Australia’s inventions have shaped
the world and captured its imagination. Australian Phil Bosua invented the smart lightbulb in 2012. LIFX light-bulbs can last up to 25 years and use up to 50 to 80 % less energy than light-bulbs currently used by many households. Australian Dr Mark Lidwill and physicist Edgar Booth developed the first artificial pacemaker in the 1920s. Invented in Australia in 1961, the ultrasound is now a standard tool in hospitals and clinics worldwide, saving lives every day. Wi-Fi was invented by Australian scientists at the CSIRO in the 1990s - It’s an invention that truly connects the world. Hills is an iconic Australian brand, celebrated for the creation of the Hills Hoist, a revolutionary rotary clothesline that has become a staple in backyards. In 1967 NSW Roads introduced pedestrian traffic signals you could hear - a great example of the government acting as an entrepreneur to innovation. This pedestrian system leads the international standards for acoustic and tactile signals for traffic lights. (and features on Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy soundtrack). The Victa lawnmower story began in a shed in Sydney, back in 1952, with a peach can, billycart wheels and a few scraps of metal. Victa Mowers is now a multi-million dollar industry exporting to 30 countries around the world. The Story of the Kelly Gang, directed by Charles Tait in 1906, is the first full-length narrative feature film produced anywhere in the world. Australia was the first country to introduce polymer banknotes in 1988, and today, polymer banknote technology is being used in more than 50 countries on more than 150 denominations. Google Maps began as a desktop program developed by brothers in Australia. Acquired by Google Maps started as a simple tool for navigation, but it’s grown into an indispensable platform for exploring the world. The Castle has become shorthand for Aussie humour and charm. Bonnie Doon in The Castle reflects Australia’s national identity - a celebration of the everyday, the quirky, and the heartfelt. Maliyan makes a final appearance, soaring gracefully across the night sky. The eagle’s flight reminds us of Australia’s enduring connection to Country, its innovative spirit, and the shared stories that unite us all." More information: www.nca.gov.au...
