Making Aliens and Robots in My Indie Game | Space Sim Devlog 2

  • Over the past few months, I've been experimenting with this little 2d space simulator I’ve been making in the unity game engine. Most recently, I’ve started to develop evil robots and strange aliens! Specifically, I'm trying to tie those tropes into the 2d physics of the sandbox, and I’ll add more to them as time goes on. I’ve also started to add abilities and power-ups, like repulsion blasts, tractor beams and shields!
    I'm still very early into the development process, so if you have any cool ideas for mechanics, abilities, and pretty much anything, please let me know!
    And because my other game, Sterling shroud has performed better than I expected, I have a bit more of a budget with this project! Expect a steam page soon ;D

    You can help me build this game! What sort of mechanics or features would you want to see added? 🤔I need some more ideas for these robots and aliens!

      Well, for the robots you can make something like the aliens and create a mothership which will move around and spawn little drones that will chase the player around, for the aliens you can add a custom meteorite or moon/planet that is like the robots space station and something like a parasite which would look like the gargantuan Leviathan deom subnautica + your aliens. Im just giving you ideas, you dont have to implement them, but i really want to say to you thank you for being such a motivator to younger/junior devs(my self included!)

      It would be cool if you had a robot that would temporarily disable your ship.

      When the aliens touch your ship it could cause a timer to start ticking down and when it reaches zero, they could take control of your ship for a few seconds and drive you into one of the obsticals.

    wow this already looking pretty fun, i think swarming hatchlings and repulsion power goes together pertty well.
    and for the mircobes think it would be pretty cool if they functioned like immune system somehow, the the hatchlings will act as antibody that sticking to anything they touch, acting as beacons to attract more aliens. and making a lifecycle to reproduce more of them like other have methioned.
    and it would be cool to see later variant of them have infected turrets and thrusters from consumed ships sticking out of them to make them even more therating. and you can even find them using infected crew members to make them smarter, using ship radio to lure more ships and form hive minds...

      The immune system concept is really interesting! Its super cool gameplay wise, and also feels like it would make sense in the world as well! I don't necessarily want the hatchlings being a direct threat to the player, so idea would be perfect! :D

    3:35 You could make a alien that latches onto your ship and drains its systems.

    Maybe make a minefield of mines that when you get close enough to them they chase you and you have to use your tractor beam to grab astroids to prevent the bomb from hitting you.

    Amazing! What if the robots had little 'scout' ships that placed different robot structures across the map over time, like a robot turret or a scout factory? That way it could seem like the robots were trying to expand and grow. You could also do some robot structures that changed gravity, like a robot sphere that had really high gravity and collected asteroids to mine into metal?

      That's a really cool idea! I think the whole slowly building all over the place would make for some super interesting dynamics in the world!

    I really like the visuals of this game you're making. Maybe your little alien hatchlings could cling to the ship or push the ship to make it harder to maneuver.

      Thanks! That's a good idea, I was thinking of making them do something similar, but I'd just need to figure out how the player could get them detached. The repulsion blast comes to mind but I don't intend for the player to have that available at all times.

    The hatchlings and the brood mother clearly imply a reproduction cycle. So hatchlings should make more brood mothers somehow. Possibly by catching and enveloping other objects, like the player's ship. If it's a sandbox game, you could totally make a whole ecosystem of those guys. And a second one out of self-replicating robots, to have them compete and battle, while the player is stuck between them.

      Ooo thats a cool idea! I did make art for a medium sized alien as well, so maybe I can incorporate that one into the cycle somehow. The battle idea sounds fun too!

    I think it would be cool if the little green aliens slowed down the player or made the controls harder.

    What if when the ship space breaks the glass window on the front of it breaks🤑🤑💀😱😱
