Cool explanation, I just got conjunctivitis yesterday and was surprised to see Steph has eye issues as well, though more severe. I guess it happens to the best of us. Also, is that your dog in the background towards the end? Which breed is it?
It is great to see a video about this topic! As a sufferer of keratoconus myself I can only agree with everything that was said in the topic. I have already undergone the crosslinking procedure (I'm German, no idea how long this is approved here) and it was quite successful! No more cornea degradation for almost 3 years now! Keep up with the informative videos Brian! I really enjoy them :)=
Im in the US and the docs I have are still fighting insurance so this will be covered and I can have it for free. It pisses me off. Been dealing with it since I was 11. So 8 years in all.
Wow Steph really is a remarkable man going through all this drama and still strived to be the champion he is today it's a shame it wasn't discovered earlier in his life luckily he has it under control at this point in his career hopefully he will continue to do well and won't get much worse our prayers are with you Steph 🙏
I have the same eye disease steph has. Apparently his is not as bad as mine and does not progress like mine because my depth perception is terrible and due to the corneal coning. I was actually the youngest known case when diagnosed in the State of NC at the age of 11. So I was put on a shortlist for the cross-linking method discussed in this video when that method starting coming about. I'm 19 now and I am just going back and forth with the insurance company about it. But yeah. I have one of the worst case in my family with this disease, so obviously his is not as bad as mine tbh. And btw. Without the cross-linking I would need a transplant by 25-30. So this will probably get a worse throughout his life. If anyone has questions regarding the disease, shoot.
ASM GraySon I’ve been wearing hard lenses since I was 15. I’m now 18 and still wear them. Glasses never worked. The lenses have been bothering my eye lately too. Probably cuz my eye shape is changing. But yeah, RGP lenses that are small and blue.
I'm 22 and have been affected for the last 7 years by this condition. Can't recognize people from a distance of about 20 feet but can still put the ball in the hoop. A ball and basket is not hard to see. If this was baseball then the league would truly be terrified. I wonder if he can use contacts cuz contacts don't fit my cornea since it is warped and the contact does lay on top of it.
As someone who deals with exactly the same condition, I can relate to Curry. I already underwent the cross linking therapy on one of my eyes and I can tell you one thing - it hurts like hell after being released from the hospital. I’ve honestly never felt so much pain or anything like it in my life before.
I have the same condition and since I was one of the youngest when I was diagnosed at 11, they always kept me in the loop regarding treatments. Basically the facility I go too just got this machine to do crosslinking a year or so ago, but they are fighting insurance and they want me to be one of the trial runs on the machine. Aka it should be free. But its outpaitent, so the pain doesnt last long tho?
Jarrett Shaw the first two days were definitely like hell. I was running all over the place because I really didn’t know what to do with myself. Painkillers don’t really work, which is unfortunate. What they will do is make you tired but that’s about it. You’ll simply have to endure it - or at least that’s what I had to do - maybe you’re lucky and they can give something that works for the eye.
if a player that wears contacts was to say get hit in the eye (like jusuf nurkic does a lot) can the contacts get messed up or slip up in the eye or something
Not so much with adapting Doc. His muscle memory, after logging hours of shooting, can already tell what's right and wrong with shooting. Vision is just for last .second correction if he's expecting incoming or traffic
Doc I can tell you googled this condition but you missed a few things. One Keratoconus doesn't progress the same for everyone nor does it progress at the same rate. You can be fine for years only to have it suddenly progress rapidly. There's also a certain age where it stops progressing all together which seems to be 35-40 years old. At it's start Keratoconus can appear as just blurry vision. As it gets worse people can develop double and multi vision of certain sources. A kind of ghosting if you will. It's especially bad with lights. People begin to see halos and Starbursts. While it can't cause complete blindness it can certainly be bad enough to cause legal blindness. You were correct about the surgeries. If he can he should probably attempt to get cxl as early as possible. And while people can wear contacts for the condition, in advance cases it doesn't completely remove the ghosting. It's also pronounced ker-uh-toh-koh-nuh s
Do a video on George Brett's hemorrhoid issue in 1980. He removed himself from game 2 of the world series, had surgery, and returned for the rest of the series. In game 3 had a HR and a double and the Royals won. Not a glamorous topic, but sports hero's are actually human. Awesome video as always👍👍👍
I think his Keratoconus is progressing since he started wearing contact lenses and in the near future he will have to tackle this problem somehow because his vision will get worse.
Love these videos man.... Was waiting for this. I also have a video Idea for you. "Why Porzingis can't stay healthy" if you look closely at every single porinzgis dunks, you'd see him landing only on one of his legs (Including the play where he tore his acl). Looking forward to the video lol
I've had bad keratoconus for almost 20 years. My corneas are so thin that they didn't meet the minimum thickness for a possible collagen cross-linking treatment.
As a lifelong baseball player who has photo-phobia I also started wearing sunglass-contacts and players on the other team would think I had demonic pupils.
He will probably never need a corneal transplant if he is just finding out that he has keratoconus. He likely has mild to moderate Keratoconus. Someone who gets this condition at a younger age is likely to progress to have more thinning and steepening of the corneas. By age 40 or so corneal cross linking is not often preformed because the aging cornea becomes more stiff just from aging. I’m an optometrist who sees this condition on a regular basis. I used to work for a corneal specialist who would preform corneal surgery for keratoconus. The youngest I’ve ever seen with keratoconus is nine years old. I have seen patients in their 50s just find out that they have this condition and they are the patients with milder forms of keratoconus. On average patients discover they have this in their 20s, often because their vision can’t be corrected to 20/20 with glasses. In my entire career I’ve only seen about five to ten patients ever need a corneal transplant. Newer specialty contact lenses called scleral lenses have reduced the need for corneal transplants by a factor of five. I see on average several patients a week with this condition because I have a specialty contact lens practice. Once keratoconus becomes moderate to severe patients need to wear hard contact lenses (such as scleral lenses) because the cornea becomes warped. This is known as irregular astigmatism. This is different than regular astigmatism that can be corrected with glasses or soft contact lenses.
So can you explain why my eyes are always red, I've had problems with my eyes being bloodshot for most of my teens (through high school and into college), it's everyday and I have special eye drops that I use. I've been told it's allergies here and there but if u know the type of condition I would greatly appreciate it
blackadder I have keratoconus & I’m 26...so I’ll tell you my experience which might help. Considering his age his experience should be similar to mine & not a severe case. It’s easier to make out large objects despite them being blurry, which is why it wasn’t affecting his shot. Where the issue lies is smaller objects or reading letters. Depending on how far they are away you can’t really tell what something is or what it says so I go off it’s shape & colors. One other thing is every object has a blur to it, the further away the worst the blur. Another example I can’t recognize facial features until a person...if I had to guess is 15ft from me & the closer they are the better I’ll be able to distinguish things. Now with contacts, for keratoconus are expensive since they’re specially made & few expertises are able to do them.
