I just remove 2*s from Dave's AEW ratings, have been for a few years. Same thing I do with Rotten Tomatoes these days, subtract 15-20 percentage points and that's probably about right.
I texted something similar to a friend that loses their mind over Dave’s ratings. Advised him to take his rating, then subtract 1-2 stars based on what you like. That’s closer to reality.
I think we can safely assume that Khan is booking for Meltzer rather than his audience, and Meltzer's brain has been deep-fried by all of the time he's been spending with his balls in the hands of the Young Bucks. Quick thing: the 500 was a typo in the original numbers. It was 5,000 PPV traditional buys for TNA's "Rebellion". Explanation: --- [...] Seems to be that it was a chain reaction of misinformation because Cultaholic and 411Mafia has reposted this piece of wrong data, which is hilarious because it seems to specify that it’s a 83% decrease [from Hard to Kill’s 22,400 buys] which makes 500 clearly not the right number. Also remember that streaming buys for TNA are typically at a larger portion compared to the number of traditional buys (Hard to Kill its around 20000 TV PPV buys, 60000 buys in total) Accordingly to Ewrestlingnews of whom wrote 5000 instead of 500, seeming to source the WON podcast and added,“It is worth noting that 34.6% of TNA Rebellion 2024 viewers went on to purchase AEW Dynasty 2024 the following day” ---
I didn't think 500 was right to begin with. That's so dystopian that if they actually did only get that number I imagine they'd shut the doors immediately. I mean that's like bankruptcy numbers. Not that 5k is that much better...
@@xxrocketshark216xx4but that number will grow a bit along with that number not including streaming numbers at all and the last ppv got 28K in streaming numbers so that’ll grow this shows buyrate and they have a tier on TNA+ that pays for the ppvs that Uncle Dave will never have. According to Uncle dave, AEW's lower ratings was because of other live sports, but when the same happened to Raw, he said people come up with excuses like nfl (live sport).

Stay ahead of the curb, incorrectly assuming all the internet smart marks who actually subscribe to his drivel would and not wanting to have the wrong opinion or B. He doesn't wanna hurt his friends' feelings
Is Dave's plan to eventually sell the Observer to Tony Kahn and retire or something? On the booking a show idea, just putting this out there with enough time and you could probably pull off a few decent level events in the four corners. Especially Grand Junction, CO look up JuCo, Rock Jam, and Country Jam. Moab, UT around Easter weekend, tends to be the big Jeep weekend, yes playing a Sturgis card. And Page, AZ/Lake Powell or Lake Mead around Spring Break. I'd say 20,000 up easily on all of them as long as you had a few names. Not sure on RMPRO(CO) and UCW's(UT) current status, but there's Riot City out of Nevada. Just a thought.

As a Japanese I never understood some American obsession with Japanese wrestling, most of the Japanese I knew think American wrestling are superior to Japanese wrestling.
Nothing is superior is pro wrestling. It all ultimately depends on which style a person prefers. Americans prefer emphasis on storytelling and character development whilst most Japanese prefer emphasis on the in ring work and realistic hard hitting matches. The U.S. has a lot of people so there are going to be a section who prefers the Japanese style of Pro Wrestling
@@EliasRoy Maybe it’s hard hitting and realistic before like 2009 it’s not the case anymore, I feel like Buddy Mathews and Tommaso Ciampa are better strikers than 95% of the Japanese wrestlers these days.
It is not an "American obsession" currently, it is one man, goof Meltzer. Back in the VHS tape trading days Japanese wrestling was like gold. Watching guys like the Funkers, Hansen, Brody, Vader, Gordy working stiff with the local stars was just tremendous. Has not been tremendous for over 20 years. Nobody told Dave that.
It became prevalent with AJPW and NJPW in the 90s. AJPW was a very serious if dangerous product and NJPW really introduced cruiserweight style. American wrestling was pretty bad on the mid 90s so the early internet wrestling community was very pro-Japan.
Star ratings will always mean nothing when Melter and his ilk are rating matching in a vacuum not taking any story or character building into account. What Meltzer likes about wrestling is entirely different to what normal people get out of it. Moves and matches are only half of what this industry is about but smarks rate it like that’s the whole package.
The fact that the young bucks and jon moxley has more 5 stars than Kurt Angle Bret Hart and the undertaker is a crime against wrestling and let's you know how far Dave meltzer sank as a wrestling observer

Dave's review of Jericho v Hook is just him scrambling to defend AEW's booking and once again blame the fans for the negatives. "The fans rushed the heel turn..." Shut up Dave.
What i have learned from Meltzer's ratings is they make more sense if you interpret them as being a 10 scale now and just divide by 2 to normalize them to ratings from 15+ years ago. Inflation hitting everyone.

*AEW is literally sinking like the Titanic*
Dave Meltzer (after every AEW Event): 5-STARS!!!! 5-STARS!!!! 5-STARS!!!! AEW IS 5-STARS!!!!
AEW can't live on "Dream Matches", Meltzer's 5-stars, and Cage Match ratings, but Uncle Dave will continue to simp for AEW till OceanSpreay gets hurt.
Only 5-Stars? Has AEW offended Dave somehow?
Undertaker & Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania got 4.5 Stars 😂😂😂
Pockets and the Pudd’n Gang have more 5 star matches than Kurt Angle
@@zlinedavid Angles has 0 same as Dave's IQ 😂😂😂
@@zlinedavid Even Lars Sullivan 😂😂😂
Angles tv matches in the first few months of his career were better than most AEW matches. @zlinedavid
@@EliasRoyForgot about that one.
Knowing Dave he would definitely give Tony's bump a 10 on his star rating scale lol. And then proceed to go on a tangent defending Tony, and then rambling nonsense while taking 20 minutes just to get to the point.
He never gets to the point though
yet not only never get to the point, but being further away from it than when he started...
I love these bits. They're like 15 minutes' worth of Jim cutting promos on Unka Dave.
Dave twisting his own bizarre wrestling notions into a pretzel, to desperately defend the people he thinks are his friends, will always be hilarious
I think we can safely assume that Khan is booking for Meltzer rather than his audience, and Meltzer's brain has been deep-fried by all of the time he's been spending with his balls in the hands of the Young Bucks. That's not to say that they've got him in a vice, but rather, he's being overstimulated by flips and kicks and dives oh my.
I *knew* AEW was a Meltzer focused promotion since the beginning.
I don’t care about the ⭐️ ratings but the “oh come on!” response now makes me deeply invested
0:44 I dunno if I'd call David vs Goliath a great match. I mean, yeah, the babyface won over a big monster heel, but he won in one move. Can't ever book Goliath again after he takes a loss like that to a little guy. He's buried.
Grudge Dave gave Roman v Cody WM match a 4.75. I think he may not have given 5 stars because the quarter point was all his remaining brain, but it is clear that he did not use it at all in the matches he gave 6 or 7 stars to.
My theory is that he didn't give it the full 5 because Cody left AEW.
Dave had to shit on WWE ratings for Mania as punishment for Tony's ALL IN footage not going his way, plus OceanSpreay's feeling hurt when WWE never mentioned him. Dynasty's ratings were desperation for the low buy rate and Tony still making an ass of himself
@@matthewhostetter8974 Honestly? I think it's just Dave going back to his old ways. The "Kurt Angle never had a 5* match, Taker VS Michaels is 4.75*" ways. For WWE, 4.5, 4.75 and 5* say a whole lot more about match quality than for All Elite Inflation. Basically, Dave rates WWE on a 5* Scale where they have to go above and beyond to get up there.
He also rates his boy toy promotion (and NJPW) on a scale where the highest is whatever he wants to give.
Cody Roman was not anywhere near a 4. At all.
It was a schmozz match. Half a dozen runins and pure gaga.
And seriously no Roman match ever is on "the best matches" list.
That being said, when he left he was the biggest star in the business so who gives a single chit about 'work rate' star ratings by some goof
@@yoholmes273 Cody vs Roman was easily the match of the year so far. It was a fantastic wrestling match with all ingredients. It was a much better match than Bryan vs Osprey which had no build or storyline purpose.
This is the same guy who didn't think Hogan vs Rock deserved more than 3 stars for all of its storytelling and crowd reactions.
Dave's AEW glazing is now crazy at this point, he also said Trick Williams is not a good wrestler, i mean, WHAT!! hes insane
Dave parrots what the Bucks say, ignoring the fact that they're flaming GOP racists, all the while pretending to be liberal IRL back when he was trying to cling onto Cornette 😂😂😂 I've never seen a more confused person.
What’s funny is the whoop that trick chant at the end when the faces all came to ringside and Tony was laying there. Dave may not like him, but Trick’s been getting main roster chants and now even at AEW
Put pretty much any WCW cruiserweight match at the top of the card in AEW in 2024 and Dave would give it 10 stars based on what he scores highly these days. He’s lost his mind.
Quick thing: the 500 was a typo in the original numbers. It was 5,000 PPV traditional buys for TNA's "Rebellion".
Explanation:
---
[...] Seems to be that it was a chain reaction of misinformation because Cultaholic and 411Mafia has reposted this piece of wrong data, which is hilarious because it seems to specify that it’s a 83% decrease [from Hard to Kill’s 22,400 buys] which makes 500 clearly not the right number.
Also remember that streaming buys for TNA are typically at a larger portion compared to the number of traditional buys (Hard to Kill its around 20000 TV PPV buys, 60000 buys in total)
Accordingly to Ewrestlingnews of whom wrote 5000 instead of 500, seeming to source the WON podcast and added,“It is worth noting that 34.6% of TNA Rebellion 2024 viewers went on to purchase AEW Dynasty 2024 the following day”
---
I didn't think 500 was right to begin with.
We aren’t saying TNA did a tremendous number but if the real number all told was 20K and Brian is guffawing over a fictional 500 number, that’s not a good look for Brian
@@TheWill1225 I mean im all for calling out Brian when he has an L but he's said alot worse. Think it was just a genuine goof
500 sounds right when you got Ali & Ziggy in Title Matches in 2024
Okada Vs PAC = HBK Vs Taker at Mania
I like PAC Vs Okada. I really did. I doubt I'll remember in 15 days.
It's 15 years later and I still remember watching HBK and Taker. I remember talking to my friends with me watching it.
These two are not equal. At all.
I love it - every Travis image of Dave, has the tongue out! Is that Dave licking the Bucks' butts?
Tony lives on another planet similar to politicians they don’t live in reality 😂
Hook and Taz are jumping to NXT. Imagine Taz and Booker on commentary together lol.
Wait until he sees the Jericho/Shibata match. He's going to spit blood.

Dave Meltzer has never passed my sniff test. I never understood how a guy who never worked, produced or even held a boom mic for a legitimate wrestling match- how anyone would take his ratings or assessments seriously.
💯
Literally all it is is that he was one of the first to do it and people in the business used to like and respect him and he was able to get enough insider info to make an interesting newsletter.
If the internet and Twitter and smart marks had existed back when Dave started the Observer someone else would have beaten him to the punch. He's literally only noteworthy bc he's a smart mark with a keyboard from an age before they were a dime a dozen.
@@xxrocketshark216xx4 They claim he’s good at being a wrestling historian, but frankly, even that function I wouldn’t trust given how his memory seems sus over time.
The one thing that business is predicated on. Dave's stars. Not money, not an audience, not tickets, just a crazy old man and his stars.
I’m a female so I can say this😅
That Toni Storm vs Thunder Rosa match wouldn’t even been 4 stars if they did topless…Dave needs to quit trippin
If the Finger Poke of Doom happened at the Tokyo Dome, Uncle Dave would've given it 15 & 7/8 ⭐...
Rumor has it Uncle Dave has a happy sock specifically for Ospreay matches.
His special sticky slipper. It does twist and turns so Dave gives it five stars

The TNA number was a typo. It did 5,000 not 500. However, i don't doubt Jim and Brian are bigger than TNA. I always listen to Jim and Brian, i never watch TNA.
According to Uncle dave, AEW's lower ratings was because of other live sports, but when the same happened to Raw, he said people come up with excuses like nfl (live sport).
And the previous two years, AEW also had to deal with those same exact live sports…and the last two years their ratings were higher by 100-thousand plus. It’s just excuse after excuse from them
“Move over Steamboat and Macho Man” hilarious
I give this podcast 5 out of 5 🌟
Honestly, Dave giving a match 6.5 out of 5 stars is like saying 10 out of 9 times, Dave is right and a good "journalist."
More stars than Mario 64
More stars than Mario Galaxy 2
Just to make it clear, even the internet wrestling fans didnt love the 6 man tag match or Jericho match. Its only Meltzer.
I'm willing to bet even he doesn't actually. I think he just said that he did to either:
A. Stay ahead of the curb, incorrectly assuming all the internet smart marks who actually subscribe to his drivel would and not wanting to have the wrong opinion
or B. He doesn't wanna hurt his friends' feelings
Dave watched ospreay vs danielson naked in the basement
Dave's room probably resembled a Jackson Pollock painting after that performance by his golden boy, Will Ostrich.
You get a star. You get a star. Everyone gets 5 stars!!!
Meltzer Rating System:
Referee shows up 1 Star
1 opponent shows up 2 Stars
Both opponents show up 3 Stars
Ring the bell to start match 4 Stars
They sell popcorn 5 Stars
I love New Japan & All Japan stuff from the 80s & 90s. Doesn’t mean I want to see every match in America emulating that style.
A high star rating from Dave means your match was only fit for nerds.
That TNA stat doesn't add up (literally) - not defending them but the figures are off and you'd think Brian would have noticed.
Anyone that actually takes Dave's personal match ratings seriously to heart are just lost causes at this point. His ratings have been awful for decades now and anyone with a brain can see it
So, according to Meltzer, the bucks vs. ftr was as good as Sami vs. Gunther. They both got the same star ratings.
its official: Okada vs PAC is as good as Taker vs Michaels I. You heard it here first.
Inflation hitting everyone.
according to that, Cody VS Roman was 2.375 Star. You sure about that?
Remember "X-Pac Heat"?
Now we have two new terms, thanks to AEW!
"Jericho Heat" and "Cowboy Heat"
Possibly soon to be followed by another brand new "Jungle Boy Heat"
Brain loves taking shots at TNA.. Even Jim seems tired of it
Uncle Dave reporting TNA sold 500 PPV's while conveniently forgetting to include other methods of purchase is quality journalism. Say what y'all want, I'd rather watch TNA than AEW.
How does meltzer still have any audience?
He brainwashed them with rumors for decades and they paid him for it
The spectacle. Hearing what he says next, and how ridiculous it'll be. What he says has very little credence. He's at Hulk Hogan's level now. People want to hear what bizarre statement will come next.
@@waynetech10 I'm right there wanting to hear and laugh. But I stopped my subscription. I stopped listening to Dave like 8 years ago, because at that time he was just playing both sides of any argument to cover himself. Plus him and Alvarez have their own q&a things... So he's got actual fans
Dave should move the stars to 40 year old virgins. That was 3 and a half 40 year old virgins
Remember everyone, this is the same guy who originally gave Hogan vs. Andre the Giant at WM3 -4 stars, lol
And considers Taker/HBK (WM25) Predictable .... for some reason
1 star*
Hogan vs Andre was a pretty well put together match considering Andre's limitations. Maybe doesn't hold up to today's wrestling fans but it told a pretty great story with the set up ect.
Al Snow said it best. That's the best match of all time because of all the pomp and circumstance. Throw in Andre being unable to move and still getting the spectacle we got, it's iconic for a reason. Dave having 40 years of "credibility" after that is astonishing.
Hogan Andre will always be the greatest match ever, headlining the biggest show ever.
Meltzer has ALWAYS been a goof and a fan of pipsqueak gymnastic flippy floppers.
Didn't Meltzer himself say at one point in his intervew with Chris Van Vliet that he takes into account the crowd reactions and atmosphere of the matches when giving these star ratings? You mean to tell me he saw that Jericho match, witnessed that energy from the crowd and went "oh *chef's kiss* impecable heat Chris, here have 3.25 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️"
AEW fans are the only people still supporting the Observer, that's why he has to protect them at all costs. If he loses their support he's out of a job
Can not wait for the review of Kenny “Breathless Harpo” Omega forcing fake tears and talking about collostomy bags, along with Okada’s cringe inducing promo
