    That explains so much. I was getting beyond 60 FPS in games, and i knew my monitor was capped at 60. But all the time, even with vsync, the video seemed stuttery, and felt like the framrate was lower than 60. Then i started using ansel to record the gameplay and found it to be incredibly smooth.

    What you guys need to do is make G Sync something you can buy on its own and have the monitors be G Sync compatible. Then that way the company's making G Sync ready monitors don't have to worry about selling a certain type of monitor. One monitor that can be sold somewhat cheap, but have the capability of being badass. Just a thought.

V-Sync, Ambient Occlusion, 2K, Hyper-thread, etc. But now G-spot... Honestly, monitor manufacturers should have implemented this themselves years and years ago. They already knew in the beginning that hardware could not keep a steady 60fps. Its the only logical solution and really, frame rates should be synced at all frame rates whether you are running 30fps, 45fps, 60fps, 120fps or 200+fps, and not just below 60fps. Synced frame rates should have always been the standard.

    Looks like they may have *massively* increased the effect of the tearing/artifacting to make the difference easier to see, but that also runs the risk (or gain, in Nvidia's books) of making the consumer think the difference is going to be *this* dramatic.
    It's cool stuff, people. Just remember that this is an example of the *type* of improvement, not an accurate measurement of the *amount* of improvement. Most games (even on poorly built or outdated rigs/consoles) aren't gonna be as bad as the left side video shown here. Ever.

      Still waiting. Freesync is cheaper and seems to work almost identical, but the top end gpu is equivalent to the gtx 1070 (which is a great card, yeah, but still you have that limit. While nvidia offers 1080ti and the new rtx cards ). I'm actually considering the idea of buying the g-sync before a better nvidia card (now with a 960). Seems ridiculous to buy that instead of a new gpu, but my current monitor have some lighting issues.

    I've been using nvidia cards for years and have gotten used to 144hz monitors. I don't really experience any screen tearing or stuttering. In fact, the entire reason for why I upgraded to 144hz was to eliminate those problems.
    So, the whole G-Sync thing completely eludes me. I don't use V-Sync because I frankly don't need it, plus it impacts performance. I don't understand what benefits G-Sync actually brings. Because, in my mind, any sort of synchronization mechanics means that some sort of limitation is being imposed on something (namely the GPU in this case). So, doesn't that imply you're lowering the effectiveness of your GPU by enabling this?
    Is there any benefit of enabling this when you don't experience any tearing in the first place?

      nope, it does not support variable refresh rates, and then you are stuck with the same problems.

    • @Ziggurat1
      @Ziggurat1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** The problem is when you have a fixed refresh rate of the monitor and the GPUs non fixed output will lead to a harmonic dissidence between the two component. This is a fancy way of saying the frames from the GPU does not line up with fractions of the framerate of the screen. The GPU will then miss refresh intervals and screen tearing will occur. If you can set the max refresh rate of the game to the native refresh rate of the screen and always reach that goal you are good to go. But with a 120Hz screen half that is 60 fps so you will not get any positives out of having a 120Hz screen if you cant match the fps always. Thats unless you either do not notice or screen tearing does not bother you as much, which is totally a personal thing. If you have said max fps and cant match that max fps then screen tearing will occur, again you might not be susceptible to noticing that.
      The alternative VSync is more than just Max fps, but if programmed correctly it wont add any latency (some games are not programmed correctly). VSync stutters occur when you cant match the native refresh rate it halfens that (the best fraction after native is half). When it changes to half refresh rate it will wait for up to half a second, and that is noticeable as a stutter.
      Soon enough Adapticsync (FreeSync) and GSync will be cheap enough to be omnipresent, and this wont be an issue because it does not just alleviate the down sides of VSync/not synced, it also looks better.

    So why does gsync need vsync ON to work (without tearing)? Is gsync a superset of vsync?
    Also why cant I just use a frame rate limit to avoid all of these issues?

    Do I need G-Sync if my frames per second isn't reaching my refresh rate? I don't have a DisplayPort 1.4 cable so I can't have HDR + G-sync. I have to choose one or the other by choosing either HDMI or DisplayPort(not 1.4 which supports both).

    • @BalvinTheBrip
      @BalvinTheBrip 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I may be wrong but from what I've been seeing, gsync only adjust your monitor's refresh rate up until it's native refresh rate. Anything passed that and you are subject to screen tearing. You also don't need Gsync. Only if screen tearing really bothers you.

    • @feelingtardy
      @feelingtardy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Unpredictable Jack freesync was supposed to do that. but monitor manufacturers decided not to build according to VESA spec made about 5 years ago, so there are very few freesync monitors and lousy refresh rate ranges to boot. there is obviously more to it, but that's the quick version. so nvidia went ahead and charged lots of money to do the same thing amd wanted to do by adding their hardware to the mix. can't argue with what they do, everyone buys their stuff.

      +zman2748 no.
      It happens every time when the buffer switch from back to front buffer doesn't happen exactly the time when image has finished drawing. (When nothing is drawn on screen.)
      Even with perfect 60fps on 60hz monitor. (In which case you can static tear line, when fps/hz do not match you get moving tearline.)

    • @SoIoCreep
      @SoIoCreep 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      AstroMagic He is saying to push your PC harder when gaming. Crank every setting to ultra "you probably do" and use DSR to set the resolution to 4K "if you do not have a 4k monitor, use DSR". Then Gsync will kick on when the framerate dips below 60. You say you don't notice a difference with it on, its because your sli 980's are keeping your fps at 60 or higher. It would be a waste to buy those AMD cards when you aren't even pushing the 980's. It would have made a lot more sense to have just one 980 with a Gsync monitor. With a Gsync monitor it really is pointless it to crank out hundreds of frames per second, or anything past 60. Then there is this, you cannot use Gsnyc with AMD video cards.. Sure you can plug the monitor in but it will just be another regular monitor and Gsync will not be able to be turned on. You would be downgrading if you switched to AMD. Their cards have less technology's put into them, they're cheaper for a reason "budget cards". So what if they can put out 60fps, what else can they do, NOTHING.. Sounds like you don't know much about your own system and how the technology's even work. I am starting to wonder if you even no how to turn Gsync on, it requires more than just plugging in the monitor ;)

    TL:DR= This technology is far from ready and Nvidia has been getting VERY lazy with quality control.
    This technology is horrible. I've owned a ROG swift and the Acer Gsync 4k monitor and was horribly disappointed with both units. It hardly works for single card setups so forget about high end 2-4 way SLI setups.Typical ploy to get more money for mediocre products. The low end 2560x1440@120Hz overclocking Korean monitors (Xstar/Qnix) are very comparable to these and are only 25% of the price.
    Also, Nvidia can't even get their "flag ship" GTX980s and 970s to produce stable frames at over 80% usage yet and the cards have been out since September.
    Check out this 100 page thread on how everyone is having trouble with the new 9XX series. All requests for explanations have been ignored buy Nvidia.

      Toxic Biohazard that's not a limitation with freesync - freesync spec is able to go from 9hz to 144hz. the limitation window you talk about is due to panel limitations. look at the reviews online and you'll see why.
