    I'm one of those that learned on the Raptor 30, started when i was 13 or so. I remember how devastating the first crash was to my cashless self but man was flying fun even though i was mostly hovering. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

    hi mr herbert, glad to see you remembered where the a,g, compound went haha. u know in the early 2000's when lipos hit my lhs my nitro flying became less and less and eventually none, battery was way easier and i coulld fly on the daily that was great or so i thought then 7 or so yrs later was on a service call to fix a farmers semi someone was flying nitro, 1st the sound of the 2 stroke scream and then the smell of the fuel brought back the excitement i felt in the late 80's waiting for my dad to break in my .049 on my shiny new PT-19. like u said "theres nothing like the smell of nitro in the morning". these days with all the rtf, bnf and arf's alot of the passion is lost cause amazon will drop u a rtf delivered by a drone (reason for remote id, imo) on ur door step 2 hrs after u the pay not button and the appreciation for model avaition was never established and therefore very few develop a passion for the hobby. i get it cox planes was mostly rtf out of the box but who wants to fly plastic that kinda looks like a toy compared to what the other planes yjat caught my eye in the fox show room. guess what im trying to say model avaition is more than just standing behind the sticks and most people wont get to experince what we did (and thats sad to me) cause they can just buy another and fly the next day and eventually move onto something else. i just turned 45 and without the hours of building only to fly for 30 seconds and the hours of repair to get her back up in the air again (im self taught, dad other than being in the air force had no exp either)(9 rc planes down b4 confidence was found) for almost a lap around the feild only to go back home with my tail tucked between my legs to rebuild and try again. took too much work to give up at this point. I know i will always be a lifetime flyer just makes me sad to see less and less members at the club and feels like i might be the last. SORRY 4 THE BOOK just glad to see others with the same passion 4 model avaition as me unlike those channels who at 1st had fun with the hobby and now only out to get views so they can keep their sponsors. keep em coming mr herbert i sure do enjoy the videos you make and for 75 u still seem to get around like a spring chicken. thanks mr herbert and as the saying goes if u dont slow down crowing u will never grow old

    They are 3d I flew mine multiple times upside down .I learnt to fly 3d using this machine ,upgraded my motor to a os version .huge power gains.the smell and the noise was worth every penny I spent. Then I bought a brushless compass 6hv and wow! my legs were always shaking when that thing spoiled up,sounded ungodly when pumping the pitch at high speed. Raptor nitro is still a favorite for me

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, it can fly some mild 3d. This one barely can hover inverted in place, not having enough pitch. If I tune it for inverted flying, it barely will fly regular. If the main shaft was just slightly longer, I could get better pitch throws. But I don't try 3d with this much. I enjoy just watching it fly, like real helicopters. Inverted flight it can do, but not inverted hover very well. Loops are big and rolls are big, compared to my real 3d helis. If I put an OS in it, it would be better for sure as I did with my Shuttles. Thanks and happy flying.

  • @chrismofer
    @chrismofer หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Love it Dave, I have been able to collect a Raptor 50 as well as a 90 that was upconverted from a 60. I like the way Thunder Tiger did the mixing, by having a teeter totter lever that the servos ride on. The Schluter Champion uses a grooved mainshaft and an asymmetric head, and the Schluter Magic uses rocking servo trays so one servo rocks the other two back and forth along with itself for collective. Of course the Kyoshos got around having the groove the mainshaft by cleverly designing the swash and bearing adapter blocks to accommodate the collective pushrods. The Shuttle uses a lever arm, but the arrangement of bell-cranks is not as elegant and symmetrical as a Raptor. This all still kind of surprises me, because it seems like using 1970s analog & TTL circuitry one could conceive of a CCPM mixer, but maybe that's larger and heavier than the mixing mechanic any way you slice it.

    Greetings from Massachusetts NightFlyyer! I'm 25 years old and have been flying rc helicopters and watching your videos since I was 7, in fact it was your old "Helicopter Do's and Dont's" that really helped me learn how to fly, as well as many of your other guides. Even though I'm a younger pilot I much prefer these older birds, and I have a small collection of them (TREX 500 Flybarred, some Eskys like the Belt CP, etc.) although my Esky 900 is the only one currently in running order lol. I also only fly scale and don't do any acrobatics, since I don't have the money to constantly repair them if I crash (if you can even find parts that is) and I just prefer the relaxing scale cruising. I also am not very good at fixing them but I've been trying to learn so I can get all my other heli's in the air hopefully someday. I've always wanted a big vintage gas helicopter and I'm hoping I can save up and buy a Thunder Tiger like the one you got here someday. I was wondering, can you use a 6 channel radio for a gas heli like this? I see people use 6 channel radios sometimes but I can never seem to get a definite answer whenever I ask for some reason. Thanks a lot for the videos you've made over the years, I'll always be a huge fan and I look forward to seeing what vintage gas helicopter you fly next!

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow. That is a great story and am so glad I was able to help in some way. Almost all of my helicopters (electric and Nitro) use only 5 channels. 1, Elevator, 2 aileron, 3 throttle, 4 rudder, 5 pitch control. Folks who spend a ton of money to have 12 or 21 channels are wasting money, as they are wasting all those extra channels they would never use. An expensive, over hyped transmitter ( no matter how good it is), will not make a person a better flier. Thanks so kindly for you great comment and know I appreciate you. Happy flying. ~Dave

    My last 3d heli, back in the late 80's, was the Thundertiger Raptor .50 3D. Loved that heli! The stuff I (& 2 others) could do was amazing! Back then, U did everything. (Probably the reason I don't like, want, need a gyro nowadays).
    On a side note, I tried a fusion 360, blade 230, & I suck at anything acrobatic on a heli now.😪

      On another note, I was helping the LHS break in a traxxas car. Got a drop of fuel on my skin. (Being a few years since I've done anything nitro), that 1 drop got in a cut on my finger, & an allergic reaction happened to my body, I'm still fighting now! That was back in late March 2024. Dr's won't believe me when I tell em what it was. I was 45 when I did nitro, 59 now. Old age isn't for the weak🤷‍♂️🤯!

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  หลายเดือนก่อน
