That’s awesome I also use reflectors as go-bar deck bars lol but you don’t need to go to Amazon to get the nylon tips you can go over to the shelving department and get Wire hanger end caps and they work just fine
It would be really entertaining to watch you guys build a guitar with only stuff you buy from Lowes/Homedepot. Wood,supplies, and hardware. Some sort of Guitar Buiding Challenge! Just a sugggestion. Love the videos, Cheers!
The use to sell spruce 2by's they dont sell mahogany walnut or cedar in my area at lowes home depot on the shelf it would be difficult for acoustic but the do sell poplar that would make a light decent electric guitar ive had one loved it better than them oak strats from mexico that feals like lead hanging around your neck
I buy awesome Maple from HomeDepot for my necks all the time. I even find flame & quilted Maple often. A few weeks back I found an AMAZING 8" wide GORGEOUS piece of quilted Maple with a ton of figuring for $6 a foot! lmao
I'm not a luthier, but I have built a lap steel, a cigar box guitar, and a "panjo". All materials, including tools, except for the strings, tuners, electronics, and frets, came from local lumber and hardware stores, and the feed store for the pan. Woods include red oak. poplar, various dowels, and misc. pine pieces for bracing. My next project will be a Uke made from red cedar for the body. Will have to carefully mill the 2" x 4" cedar and do a lot of gluing to make the top and back, but that is what hobbies are for.
Have also made a Cajon drum, small plywood bongos, and a tambourine using bottlecaps.
You can do a lot when you are bored. ;)
The slate pieces are a super cool hack! A few of these glued to a board and presto, you’ve got yourself a sanding station! Sweet tips!

Excellent show fellas as usual! I LOVE the butcher block. I did my whole kitchen counter tops in Lowes butcher block, and I use it all the time on CNC projects too. Its real handy for good CNC tooling and such.

I'm always picking up things from Home Depot, Lowes and Menards. I use one of the stone tiles for sharpening, I pick up clamps every now and then too but Harbor Freight is a great place for clamps. I've been eyeing the butcher block cabinet tops as well! As far as go-bar rods, I like to go to Walmart and pick up those short spring loaded curtain rods, I think these things work great for that. Great video guys!

Great video! I'll have to look into those butcher boards for setting up workspace in my garage. I'd also recommend Harbor Freight. I've bought tons of stuff there that is really cheap but much more economical.

This is really genuinely useful! In the UK we have B&Q - it's cheap and nearby. That's possible the best thing about it. It's better than getting stuff on Amazon.

I found Diablo Sand Net at Home Depot a couple months ago and they are awesome. No clogging or finish corns to deal with. Great idea for the go bars as they are expensive to buy and have shipped to your shop.

Great ideas. Thanks. Auto parts stores sell spark plug gap measures for measuring string and fret wire height. And telescoping mirrors. Much cheaper than Stewmac.
great little video. Always nice to see a more economy way to get things. And made me laugh when you said you don't want to wait for stewmac for 2 or 3 days... average delivery for them so far is about 1 to 1.5 months. That's, of course, with border crossing to canada. I'm sure it is a lot of wait time in a bin in some warehouse somewhere. I love their shop but I really have to plan things out if I want to get it from them.
I, too, use the Lowes reflectors in my go-bar deck. And the little 1/4" caps (white) are also there at Lowes. I bought similar reflectors at Home Depot, and they are a tiny bit smaller diameter, and the little caps fall off, so I prefer Lowes. I also have bought the orange sticks at Lowes, and they are pretty stiff, and I use them only when I absolutely need to use them, and they take yellow caps. There is an aisle at Lowes labeled "Hard-to-find" so that is a fun place to find things to make inventions like my side bender parts. So, if you can't find something because it's hard to find, just go to the Hard-to-find aisle.
If you are in Australia and go to Bunnings, check out the timbermate woodfiller. It comes in a stack of colours including Australia / NZ natives (if you use Aus natives). Very useful.

what a great idea for a video. about half of my gear in my studio is from a non luthier supplies.
When I’m asked what I’m looking for, I reply “inspiration”. They typically leave me alone after that. Or I just do my shopping with headphones in and when they start talking to me I just give them a thumbs up 👍

MDF board is a big go-to for templates, bench tops, and a bunch of other stuff I'm not remembering. Generally get 1/4 or 1/2" 2'x4' for 10-12 bucks.

Chris, have you found a use for the larger orange reflector sticks for go bars or are they just too stiff? Do you get 2 go bars from a reflector or do you make the. Longer and suck up the wasted shorter piece? Thanks. Love the channel.

I have tried home depot lumber, I used a piece of poplar for a strat style neck and eucalyptus fretboard. It turned out pretty stable, not great as it was a test, my very first experience building a neck.
I like bulls eye shellac lol.. can mix it with lacquer too.
T nuts lock nuts bolt stock those long nuts in different sizes used to connect bolt stock together nuts bolts in general i use them for my diy tools a lot. I use mdf for a stable product for the making of radius dishes etc. made my own bending machine 3- 200 watt bulbs 1 inch square tubing, light sockets , dimmer switch sheet metal, springs ply wood, and my diy thicness sander pretty well everything except pillar block bearings conveyer belt for that build also ball bearing furniture drawer glides for binding machine router lift i built yeah the you tube guys i got inspiration from for building diy tools, wooden tool man ,stumpy nubs , to many to mention .i love building wooden diy tools got way too many i guess but whats a old retired old man to do lol I use alot of kiln dried oak from lowes for critical things because it will hold a scew well ,and is stable and strong use varnish from lowes to finish it all well on both sides so the tools wont warp I love you tube i hardly watch tv ever any more. Well time to quit rambling and get to building something have a good un friend's love your channel by the way you do super work and super helpful thanks !

I make stick dulcimers and get my clamps either on clearance at Lowe's or Harbor Freight. As I make cigar box guitar type builds, I repurpose a lot of things. All thread rod makes good nuts and saddles, just cut to the desired length and dress up the cut ends on a grinder or file them. My neck wood is glued together poplar and oak from Lowes (we don't have a nearby Home Depot, but there's 3 or 4 Lowes in easy driving distance). Since I started build them from glued together strips, I can put the grain like I want it and I haven't had one bend or break under stress. Lowes and Harbor Freight are "Toys R Us" for me. Edited to add: I'm looking to build a mold for my dulcimers to get away from either using cigar boxes or using violin bodies. Those table tops look like a distinct possibility.
Counter top or window scraps are also great flat surfaces.

I have found some amazing! Figured maple 🍁 at home depot. (Helps that i do all the maintenance for all homedepot in my area) i actually have a stupid amount of it wish i could show a picture!

Just a heads up cheap box store tile is definitely not flat. That's why they suggest not to tile your wall in a half offset staggered pattern because it exaggerates the warp
What about CLAMPS?!? That's one thing I would go there for. What kind do they have that are worth getting? Funny too how you're sporting the Stew Mac top, lol.
Englemann spruce for bracing in certain applications. :-)
Oh, and as for abrasives, don't over look the fancy Mirka stuff. You can't get it at a hardware store, but it lasts way long.

USE a level to make sure the stone tiles are FLAT! Not all of them are. I use granite tiles for both dry sanding and also wet sanding things perfectly flat. Put a thin layer of polyethylene film over the tile and it is also a great surface to epoxy things together. Lexan is a trademarked name for polycarbonate. Plexiglass is a trademarked name for acrylic. Polycarbonate is also stronger and a bit less chemical sensitive than acrylic.
I found the Lexan cost more than the Acrylic in my case. I always go Lexan though!

12x24 tiles aren't flat. I mean at a short relative distance they are. Probably flat enough to sharpen tools and flat sand but they're manufactured with a bow in the middle to increase break resistance when walked on. Similar to how an 18 wheeler flat bed is arched in the center falling away towards the front and back.

I’ve made purfling a couple of times out of that fiber paper or fiber veneer I think it’s called from lmi. Worked well but a couple times was enough for me! Seems it’s one of those things just easier to buy unless you need some particular design or thickness.

12×24"tiles aren't actually flat. I'm a tile setter. Get a piece of stone countertop. The tiles bow that's why half bonds aren't recommended.
Snap on makes those neck lamps too, but they're not $20!
When I worked at Home Depot I noticed a guy scratching his head and wandering around the hardware section, so I asked him if he needed help and he said, "Well, you probably wouldn't understand what I'm doing. I'm building a boat."
It was a slow night and I proceeded to give him an hour long class in boat building. He got his money's worth that night!

I've worked at Home Depot and I build guitars...don't ever be afraid to tell an associate what you are doing? They may just re-direct you to someone who might have some knowlwdge. Many big box workers have some pretty interesting avocations and they might know what another worker is into. Just don't let them talk you into Zinser products etc. Some of them are anxious to make a sale (might have a lot of company stock!) Look for the sweaty person with a dirty apron!
That's a hard agree on the sandpaper. Cheap sandpaper is a false economy.

OMG!!! I am not the only one with the apprehension of when the guy (or lady) asks me what I am working on!!! I am always, I call it, "Cross pollinating" tools and materials to suit what I am doing which is not what they were intended for!!

I so identify with the comments about not wanting to talk the employees about what I'm working on. I feel like every time I go into the big box stores, I'm trying to do something totally "off-label" with the products I'm looking at.
