In a small town in the West of France, during the German Occupation, a room is requisitioned by a Wehrmacht captain, Werner von Ebrennac. The house where he now stays is inhabited by young Jeanne, who makes a living by giving piano lessons, and by her grandfather. Quite upset, the two "hosts" decide to resist the occupier by never speaking a word to him. Now Werner is a lover of France and its culture, and he tries to persuade them that a rapprochement between Germany and France would be beneficial for the two nations. Quite unexpectedly Jeanne, little by little, falls in love with Werner. At the same time, the francophile officer loses his illusions, realizing at last that what Nazi Germany actually wants is to thrall France and to stifle its culture...
Before watching the film, i didnt know what is the silence of the sea, after watching this film, i knew that silence is very powerful. That is true romance.
Should watch the 1949 original. And done in black and white

I have always been fascinated with films that have a romance like this, they don't need to physically touch to communicate their feelings toward one another, and how it slowly builds yet stays ever special.

@@Nu.Nu1022 have you watched "Equals" with Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult? It is dystopian movie, extremly charged with emotions and shows love in emotionless society. I couldn't get rid of this movie from my head for very long time. I believe it is also a methapore of relationships in general - throughout different phases of love. I strongly recomend it. Moreover I have a feeling that we are heading towards such a world - sterile, deprived of feeleings, "safe", terrible.
Amazing feat! This move transport the audience to higher dimensions, it taps open the heart and let the love flow. Werner represents both war and love, but love above all. While there is no dialogue between the two, Bach's Prelude is the musical representation of the love Werner and Jeanne could not profess. After watching this film, what woman wouldn't love Werner, he is nearly perfect (probably not real but an excellent ideal)!
He has the most beautiful eyes. Looking at him staring at her, my heart becomes warm too. The eyes said everything.

Beautiful movie and told so well. Jeanne did physically brush past him several times and oh when she smelt his clothing, wow. There are records of where lasting love was found during and after WW11.

a most delicate, almost ethereal movie about love, loyalties, art and principles in time of war and cruelty. Both actors are just perfect. Movies don't make me cry latelly. But this left me in tears. What a delicate gem of a movie.

Most beautiful flim I have ever seen after a little chaos . This flim is about vulnerability ,about persistence ,about delicacy , about honesty , about longitivity.
Normally I would not listen to music like this, but with this movie clip, I’m hooked. I bet most viewers are women😂 The German officer has the right amount of masculinity and gentleness, which is hard to find.
So true in today's world. You only get 1 chance in your life to have that kind of man. Take it. Once you loose it. It is gone.

Have you read the book and its movie adaptation? They both have the same plot, music, German occupation in France and a forbidden bittersweet romance. A must watch if you watched this.
I am totally awestruck, SHOCKED even that some people can actually convey so much of their true feelings for each other even with so few words exchanged... No words (literally) could ever describe the sheer beauty and emotional impact of this movie. Perhaps maybe Hollywood should really get a CLUE!!!

This is so beautiful and he (Werner/Thomas) is quite attractive beyond the limit, these eyes are impressive - he has expressive eyes. The story reminded me of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, also reminds North and South (Elizabeth Gaskell), this interaction, dynamic and tension between the main characters.

It's partially the uniforms. The Third Reich was horrible but they had good-looking uniforms.

Resulta maravillosa la película y el libro, desde el titulo"el silencio del mar" hasta los diálogos del oficial que admira la cultura francesa y la verdadera resistencia de quienes son obligados a dar alojamiento al enemigo. @@abrilmartinez8363 tuve suerte en conseguir el libro en librería Gandhi . Es una colección de historias cortas donde , en mi opinión sobresale esta narrativa sustento de la película. La relación amorosa silenciosa pero emotiva , exige de estos dos personajes, en la película , demostrar con la mirada y el silencio de uno de ellos, que ha surgido un amor fuerte y definido. Te amo y reconozco que a pesar de ello tenemos que separarnos. El libro se refiere al hecho de que el mar siendo continua la marea expresa por momentos su fuerza y su tranquilidad , es todo menos silencioso, pero en los momentos de quietud el silencio esconde su propia fuerza. . Intente buscar en internet el libro y solo lo encontré en español en esa librería . Ojalá puedas leerlo. Saludos .

I have seen this movie many times, some scenes I hadn't seen before. It always affects me. What they did to the women after the war for fraternising with the enemy was pretty awful. No doubt there were genuine affairs as in this story. Such a pity for this love story to finish as it did.

I loved Werner. I noticed he looked different in every scene. Some scenes he looked full face, some scenes he looked skinny face, in some scene younger and in some he looked older.....but I still 💙💛💜❤️💚♥️ him.

Whenever Jeanne walks past Werner, they nearly make physical contact. She'll just catch his greatcoat as she brushes past him.
Werner thinks she's accepted his offer of a ride & looks pleased right before Jeanne just walks on past him, lol! Poor boy.
Thomas Jouannet has the most beautiful long eyelashes. Such an attractive feature!
When Werner introduces himself for the first time, he doesn't include his rank at first, but it's rather an afterthought. He's not defined by being a Wehrmacht officer. I love that.

Love----very high frequency, high vibraton. Suite francaise is miscast, wrong actors, very violent, crude, chaotic and lack of depth in exploring the emotions, maybe there are too many characters in it.

У меня сохранился дедовский фронтовой альбом, там всего несколько страниц о войне, о ненависти к фашистам именно за убийство фронтовых "братьев", и месть была только за это!!! Но остальное все о любви!!! Мне кажется, что именно это помогало выжить в то страшное время, а иначе нет смысла жить. Любовь спасет мир!!!

Очень жаль, что война разрушила много жизней, много судеб, любимые люди не могли быть вместе, и, возможно, так и прожили всю жизнь в одиночестве либо с нелюбимыми. Плохих наций не бывает, бывают плохие люди. Актёры конечно же сыграли на высшем уровне, аж мурашки.

Once I discovered the movie I have probably watched it a thousand times since. It is my all time favorite. Everything is perfect in it. Thomas is a great actor. He should have won an award for his excellent performance. Lately, I have come across an interview he gave concerning the movie. I want to share an excerpt of this interview with you. "Comment as-tu été choisi pour ce rôle ?
- Thomas: Je n'avais pas revu Pierre Boutron depuis "L'Affaire Dominici" et je l'ai retrouvé par hasard dans un bus... Je revenais de Londres. Quand je lui ai dit que je perfectionnais mon anglais, il m'a demandé si je parlais aussi l'allemand. Il m'a immédiatement proposé le rôle... J'ai lu le scénario et évidemment, j'ai été séduit par le personnage de Werner. J'ai accepté tout de suite !
Qu'est-ce qui t'a surtout séduit chez lui ?
- Thomas: C'est un rôle magnifique... D'autre part, ma mère est allemande et ce rôle me permet de défendre mes origines, avec cette volonté de changer l'image caricaturale qu'on a des allemands et montrer qu'ils n'étaient pas tous des nazis.
Et cet accent allemand, facile à maîtriser ?
- Thomas: J'ai pris beaucoup de plaisir à jouer avec cet accent. Chaque mot était étudié. Quand j'ai vu le film à St-Tropez, cela m'a fait un peu bizarre pendant les premières minutes... Ensuite, je me suis habitué !
Et l'uniforme, ça fait quoi ?
- Thomas: C'est agréable de porter l'uniforme et surtout ça aide à entrer dans le personnage."
