Love your enthusiasm, I definitely think you should be invited to the Nobel Prize! I’m sad The House of Doors did not win this year, it was so wonderful.

Eric , this is off subject , but I just got a lovely gift - a box of TEN books by JCO ! I’m currently reading Solstice - marvelous ✍️. I hope you’ll post another talk with her soon . I was writing in my journal how much I enjoyed her writing and I wrote Enjoyced by accident .

I've read In Memoriam and Trespasses (both excellent), have bought Demon Copperhead to read, will be receiving Babel for Christmas (and Rory Stewart's Politics on the Edge), and will be buying The Bee Sting, Cuddy, Prophet Song and In Ascension when they come out in paperback in 2024. Happy Christmas Eric, and everyone.

Thanks for this video. Here and in your other videos, I love how broad your tastes are. What I mean by this is that you like a lot of books I like, which trend towards the dark, strange, and melancholy (Fosse and Cărtărescu here, for example). However, whereas other Booktube channels certainly give me lots of good recommendations for books of the sort I usually read, your channel exposes me to a lot of books I think I wouldn't have come across in other such venues. The overlap in our tastes makes me trust you on lots of great books I might not have given a try otherwise. And, as in this video, you keep up with and summarize a lot of literary news I don't have the time or the will to keep up with on my own! Many thanks, as always!

One of the most masterfully written books that I enjoyed reading this past year was The covenant of water by Abraham Verghese. Did you read this or any of his other books?

two prizes that you didn't mention that I like to follow are the Baille Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction, won this year by Fire Weather, by John Vaillant; and the Wainwright Prize for nature writing.

This was a delightful summary. I was surprised to realise I have read ten of these prizewinners despite not being such a follower of prizes as you. The best outcome for me was seeing how closely our reactions match on those ten so I know I can rely on your recommendations in the future 😊

Authors are top tier celebrities for me too, and I’m so glad that you bring us along on so many of your book prize adventures! Several of these winners are among my favorite reads of the last few years but others fell short for me, and I suspect that’s the way it always will be. The Booker in particular was just not a good year for me, but I am encouraged by the recently-announced 2024 judging panel. Next year too there will be more nonfiction with the new WP prize. I do love following book prizes regardless of the outcome!

I agree on Solenoid, enjoyed it profoundly, it took me longer than normal to read it too, as the through the translation, a lot of esoteric words were used, (English IS the the most difficult language); that even I, and my killer vocabulary had trouble deciphering them in my head, so I was googling a lot, and writing these new, wonderful adjectives etc and their definitions in my book of words.

Love this wrap up of many of the prizes. I've only just watched this year's Giller Prize award, so I did look for it on your list 😄
So pleased that you mentioned our Australian prize, The Stella. It's really caught on and it's interesting that you mentioned it over The Miles Franklin Prize. Sadly the MF is not getting the coverage that it should.
Do you follow The International Dublin Award, I find it an interesting prize. I've also just come across the CanLit prize "Canada Reads" seems like a fun reader inclusive prize.
I've only read half a dozen of the winners you've mentioned, have to try out some more next year. Happy Reading 🙂

I agree with your assessment of Babel. I was saving this book for the end of the year and had such high expectations. But I was very frustrated with the writing/story starting around part 4 and even though I normally cry over the littlest things I felt absolutely nothing for the characters‘ fates at that point. For some reason I also found the magic system awkward and not very convincing.
An Immense World was my absolute favorite book this year even though I‘m normally not into non-fiction.
Thanks a lot for this video. I really like the idea and will add a couple of books to my TBR.

Nice award-winning books wrap up. I loved In Memoriam and Demon Copperhead. I listened to about half of Trust, didn't blow me away enough to make me want to continue, the same goes for the Bee Sting. I appreciated The Prophet Song but the fact that it was written in the third person kept me at a distance, also, the audiobook was narrated by a man, which I thought it was strange considering it's about a mother. I'm yet to read Time Shelter or Solenoid, but I'm keen, hopefully, I'll get to them in 2024. Our Wives Under the Sea had potential but something was missing for me. Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow was one of my most anticipated books but it turned out to be a disappointment.

A few great books (in my subjective opinion) that weren't mentioned and to my knowledge came out this year (some were nominated for the prizes you mentioned):
    In Ascention (Martin McGinnis)
    Still Born (Guadelupe Nettel)
    The Last Ranger (Peter Heller)
My Name is Iris (Brando Skyhorse)
I still haven't read "I Have Some Questions for You" by Rebbeca Makkai, but I love the author and have high hopes for that one

You have completely sold me on Lynch's book. Its even more pertinent bearing in mind the mobs that gathered in the street in "reaction" to an attack they felt was by a migrant. Of course it didn't matter that a migrant was the one who had the courage to confront the man and stop him. In any case this is a story for our times. Its wrong to think that totalitarianism, extremism and mob violence happens in "other" societies. It can happen anywhere.

I'm from Canada, you're not missing much for The Giller winners. Used to respect Giller winners a ton, but recently it's been ridiculous, very left-wing obsessed choices, unfortunately there's a lot of pandering. I'm left wing, social liberal etc etc but Giller is choosing due to trending stories that are happening in Canada. As we are the bastion of Liberalism gone too far, we are overcorrecting, no meritorious decisions. Giller books for the last ten years are, uh, bad, definitely not a "Big Award style Novels"
