      Apres Woodstock, CSNY, and the singer-songwriter era guitars were flying out of the music stores. I bought my first Martin D-28 used, good condition for $350. I was off and running. There was a ton of influences to inspire you at that time. Great music being written and played.

    I just stumbled onto the video of this entire amazing show which included Jefferson Airplane and Joanie Mitchell and I thought this was by far the best part. Gives me chills.

    I stayed up and watched this when it was originally broadcast. Hendrix was supposed to be on the show, but they said he was too exhausted. I remember Stills showing Dick Cavett his jeans and boots caked with mud from Woodstock. And I remember this performance all these years later. Magical.

      the story behind this appearance was pretty cool, i know joni wasnt reallly allowed to go to woodstock because she had this show to do the next day and she said all the boys went and flew in on a chopper to make it in time. sounds like she regrets not going too

    This song was originally written for Stephen, David and Graham to sing as a trio but when Stephen came out he just launched into it as his own and quite rightly as he wrote it, one of my❤ all time desert island songs ❤️⭐️👍

    Stephen Still's is a hero of mine. I've been listening to this music since grade school and now I'm 54. Listening to him sing and play this simple song can still make my eyes tear up. A creator of much beauty in art...Stephen Stills will always be one of the greats. CSN was a great choice to join too =)

    Stills is a true beautiful voice with no additives and reverbs, etc. I've loved him and his sound since I was a teenager, and I'm 65. There is no other like him, never will be.

      Not really. If there is “an overall CSNY sound” across every group song no matter who composed it, it was the Crosby/Nash harmony.

      @@GordonLF To some extent, you are right. But, to give Stills his due, his voice helped form the CSN sound, and he was a better musician BY FAR than Cros and Graham. And they would be the first ones to tell you. On the first album, Stephen played bass, drums, acoustic guitar and just about ALL the lead riffs. On that album, he got the nickname "Captain Manyhands". The man was a dynamo!

      Is there any other version? The recording on Deja Vu is solo acoustic. In the 50 years since he wrote the song, I've never seen nor heard any live performance by Stills with augmented accompaniment. Please explain.

The studio version on Deja Vu (which I just re-listened to) seems to be different only in its slightly slower tempo, a different melody in the "morning come's to sunrise..." line, and the way that Stephen's voice breaks before "embrace." Oh, and some one else in the thread below noticed that the "...and he wasn't into sellin' door to door" line isn't in this version. I think this performance preceded the recorded version.

    Stephen Still was the least know from the incredible group, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. All of them were and still are fabulous artists. However, nothing will ever compare to their musical arrangements and vocal harmonies. How lucky was I to see them live so many times... ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

      Maybe the least known, but the real talent in Crosby, Stills, and Nash. With the addition of Neil, it brought another extraordinarily talented person into the band.Crosby and Nash were no slouches in their song writing abilities, played great guitar, and without them the phenomenal and legendary harmonies don't exist, but neither could touch Stills and Young on the guitar.

    I learned to play this song, by ear, in the wrong key. He is using "Drop D." I learned it in " Open E. " What a talent he has.

      Mauro Ardu I learned it in DADDAD tuning. But it sounds so off compared to this performance (I want to play it like Stills did here). Do you know for sure that he is playing in EEEEBe here? If so, I don’t need a TH-cam video to teach me that and I’ll just continue playing in that tuning. Thanks!!

      Finally, if you think about it, it's the same thing, the same tuning but a tone below. The actual tuning is called Palmer Modal tuning, after Buffalo Springfield bassist, Bruce Palmer, who invented the tuning. The actual tuning is EEEEBE, though you can leave the A-string tuned to A because it isn't used in the song at all.

      I play it in DADDAD , can play the guitar part well, but working on the softness in my voice, i try and do it like just softly talking. When I'm happy with it I'll put on TH-cam

    Stephen Stills is one of my favorite musicians. Definitely in my top ten. I feel very connected to his music and always sang about life. I love Tree top Flyer and Find the cost of freedom.
