  • THINGS TO EXPECT OUT THERE ...
Trike Hobo Steve Greene chats about a variety of things to expect out on the open road of recumbent trike adventuring, when far from home for days or weeks at a time, facing the demons of psychological fear in addition to the challenging realities of the physical world as each day unfolds. Living in a tent self-supported is exciting. This is Part One of a two-part discussion.

I'm 86 and I'm still getting around with a Terratrike. If you've done US 101 Humbug Mountain must have beeen something.

It's a beautiful route to ride, challenging in many places with big long steep hills, but worth the experience for sure. I have ridden Hwy 101 on my trike from the Columbia River in Oregon, south to Morro Bay in California (south of there, 101 begins getting into more crowded southern California cities, which are not nearly as relaxing and fun to ride as the northern California coast and the Oregon coast).

In 2018 I bought my first trike and immediately I started my first trip: 10.000 km from Madrid to Timbuktu. In 2022 I bought my second trike and I started immediately my second trip that has not yet finished. 24.000 km across Europe and Asia

Wow, that is very impressive Nicola! I really like your AZUB fatrike, and that fat tire trailer you pull. Your trike canopy is a great design too. I think that getting out on a trike adventure immediately is the best way to go (after all the gear and preparatory issues are handled) ... by getting out there quickly, it doesn't let the mental fears we have override the journey and stop it before it begins. I am watching some of your videos on your channel, and will continue to do so over time. Thanks for sharing!

When in a tent, to take a pee in winter, do it in a bottle

I had a good windsurfing buddy who stayed inside his van at night, and he did that so he didn't have to get outside. He called his device a "European" bottle (you're a peein') ... I got a real kick out of that! I have never opted for that method when camping on trike adventures. I just get up and go outside my tent in the bushes and trees. It's quite invigorating in winter, especially once at only 23 degrees Fahrenheit (-5 degrees celcius).
