You said “no” naturally as a child. Then you went through 20 years of psychological abuse called “school” where you were conditioned to obey an authority figure and get punished for saying “no”. Now you have to buy a book to undo the psychological damage and get back to how you were at 2 years old.

Depends. I've gone through school and I have said no a lot. I actually had issues with saying yes because I was always against authority figures. It wasn't until I started saying yes that I started making more money. At the same time, I wasn't use to this new habit at all. This isn't making me unlearn a skill but rather how to utilize a skill that I already had much better than before.

In my early days at college, I used to say yes to everyone and everything, just because I thought I'd have been seen as selfish or lying If I said no. This led to a lot of failed projects of others and mine. After being aware of this, I started saying no to nearly everything. Sure I lost some deal-like friendships on the way, but the freedom I earned was well worth it.

All through out the years been saying yes to please others despite how miserable I felt those time and how discontent I felt and felt burnt out all the time.. It's amazing to see some people shows support and saying no doesn't have to be huge deal in our day to day life and social circle.

    Why it's hard - upbringing
Saying Yes = Saying NO to everything else.
    Strength to say NO
    1) It increases Generosity
    - you may feel bitter towards others
    - say YES to person well being
    2) Saying NO for right reason
    - people will value your time
    3) No = yes to what matters
    How to say -
    1) Categorial NO
    2) only Sunday
    3) Committed to something else
    4) Counter offer

How cool would it be if you could say no without coming up with an excuse like referencing a commitment or proposing a counteroffer? Even I have been preconditioned by society to not say no without at least offering an explanation. And there are some people who are shocked when my explanation for not helping them involves some leisure activity that I have planned. Moral of the story is, if they get angry than maybe you shouldn't surround yourself with such people.

  • @vtphan2012

This is easily the worst book I've known. It violates the first principle of how to influence people (Robert Cialdini), reciprocity, in the worst possible way. People by and large don't have a tendency to reach out for help. So when they do, they really need it. Saying No to them is the a virtual guarantee of damaging those relationships. Reaching out and helping people before they ask is key to influencing. When someone asks for help, your help will pay back big time. This book builds on very flawed premises. Saying yes does not mean you lend someone $100 when you only have $110 in your bank. The book that should have been written is "How To Say Yes Without Damaging Your Priorities". Do not do what this book promotes. Nurture your habit of saying Yes. You will regret saying Yes once in a while, but it's a great way of living and influencing people.

    • @syckles

I disagree with this sentiment. The book is a bit of fluff, but it teaches strategy for successful methods of saying no, but never directly tells you when to say no. Anyone who spots a gullible fool will certainly ask them for rides, house sitting, help moving, and any other thing they can take advantage of, but its up to the reader to identify when no is the best option.
