    Their anatomy is never explicitly stated, but they seem to be silica based lifeforms with an extremely high body temperature (which is why they’re able to move so quickly)! Their blood looks like molten rock, and when it gets on Tom Cruise, his face literally melts! Very cool design and great visual storytelling!

      @@jonathansiagian2729 A lot of chemical reactions go way faster when it's hotter so they can just perform every action faster.
      In the human body alone we need a lot of katalysts to even allow for certain bodily functions to not shut down due to the reactions not being feasible at body temperature without aid.

    Edge Of Tomorrow was derived from the Light Novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka - Despite some parts being wildly different I was pleasantly surprised when I watched the film at how well it adapted the Light Novel and the Manga.

      @@speziell1575blatantly false. The mimics here are nothing like the mimics in the light novel or manga at all. They may as well be different species due to how different they are.
      So yeah, he should concentrate on the filmmakers here, since the only thing they took out of the manga and ln mimics is the name and the time travel ability. Everything else is original work that the studio did.

    • @jgphantom6
      @jgphantom6 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      @randomdude3578 but the time travel ability is literally what sets the apart from other aliens in film... If All You Need Is Kill hadn't been written then this film wouldn't exist and that's a fact so I don't see how it's too much to ask to just at least name drop the original author to recognise that this story exists because of him.

    • @TheBlackEventorizon
      @TheBlackEventorizon ปีที่แล้ว +101

      @@randomdude3578 They changed the location from Japan to Europe but they kept the Exoskeletons, the male & female protagonists, the time mechanics and most of the solution to the invasion - The only major plot point they changed was the every ending between Keiji and Rita, because I doubt they felt they could get away with that and still feel like the film ended positively which would have left viewers feeling very unsatisfied.
      This is very similar to say The Lion King which is based on Hamlet, or She's the Man which is basically Twelfth Night in a modern setting. Yes, they restyled the mimics as they wouldn't have worked very well on screen, but besides that the core ideas are all still there.

    The mimics kicking up sand and dirt makes sense even from an in-universe perspective. They would have to push with a massive amount of force to move that quickly. And the way the tentacles dig into the ground, and how they shift their body weight, would account for why they don't skid when sharply changing direction. Just really, really good creature design.

    My favourite aspect of the Mimics is how their totally alien style of movement connects to their different relationship to space and time, their ability to control time makes their super fast alien movement seem all the more fitting. It was pretty nice how that tied into their ability to control time, Mimics were fast because they themselves had already been on that beach a thousand times and they were just hyper efficient at slaughtering resistance and mastering every scenario. What is better is that the audience doesn't need to be hand held to understand how powerful and planet destroying they are, it's just self evident. Fantastic monster design imho. It's iconic but it's also far more familiar, with a body shape that's similar to many primates (two legs, two "arms" and a tail) and a life cycle based on that of parasitoid wasps which are truly fascinating and horrifying creatures in their own right - they're examples of viral symbiosis, each wasp species carrying a unique polyDNA virus encoded in its own genome which is only expressed in the ovaries of the female wasp. Viral particles are produced to be injected into the host organism along with the egg, and the virus wipes out the host's immune system!

      I think it flopped because it was a boring movie. The only good thing about it were the visuals but they were just a bunch of ideas that werent connected to the narrative. • @graytonw5238

      Agreed on that. Not only was it visually unlike anything in other alien movies, but it was so unworldly that even its intentions were never really understood, if there were any. As for tanking at the box office, I think the movie was a little too cerebral for most people. When movies need non-stop action and simplistic plots to draw tons of people, movies like Annihilation get side-lined.

    In my opinion, the shape-shifting or shape-assimilating alien in Carpenter's "The Thing" is also a completely unique design. The fact that the alien can constantly change its shape, splitting off and reassimilating parts to create something completely new, and that you never know what it really looks like, makes it an equally unique and terrifying opponent that is in no way inferior to the Mimics.

    The Mimics in the Edge of Tomorrow and the White Spikes from The Tomorrow War are my favourite modern movie aliens. They are perfectly portrayed as relentless and unstoppable civilization ending invaders. Makes me yearn for a Xenomorph movie shot with the same grand battles instead of the usual trope of a whole hive chasing a handful of stricken space miners down some corridors.
    I also like the invaders from Battle: Los Angeles but they don't have the primal animalistic viciousness of the Mimics and White Spikes. They're just the updated version of the humanoid alien invaders with guns.

    This movie is actually based on a manga called "All you need is kill". In it, the mimics are spheres with huge creepy human mouths that send out stabbing spikes from everywhere on their bodies at will. The problem would be those don't look very compelling. The mouths are hugely unsettling, but they wouldn't translate well to the big screen.
    Also, you really labor the point of requiring time resets and time loops to defeat them and that's the only way, but it's the other way around. We're the infinitely adaptable, incredibly versatile, and totally unpredictable monsters, and these alien invaders required time resets to defeat US.

Yes, there's a lot of metaphysical thought tied up in this movie like the TRUE DIFFICULTY trying to establish communication with an intelligent galaxy traversing race. Also their ability to write being completely independent of their ability to "speak". Yes, Arrival is not a shoot 'em up movie but you were asking about totally nonhuman aliens.

    These Mimics remind me a lot of the game Prey, the way they move and look, their almost random nature with the twisting organic parts, this movie came out before the game so it may have taken inspiration from this, and if so, that is really cool!

    I think the best portrayal of an alien in any media is the colour from „the color out of space“ by H.P. Lovecraft. Its a thing that is alive, but can not be grasped by humans in any way, and even science, the tool that so far, has explained almost everything to us, cant explain it either

    I'm STILL hoping for a second movie. Evidently, it would be more a 'Prequel' with the story of how/when/where these aliens first came and how it developed from there with more of 'Rita's first encounter and experiences with her time reset abilities. IF it's made as well as the first, it would be as great as the first movie was (shame though that it didn't do as well as hoped in the cinemas). I loved this film! 👍

    I remember watching this movie like a year or two after it came out and honestly I was thoroughly impressed with it and surprised that I never even heard of it before seeing it. I actually found it by accident because my dad had it randomly downloaded and I decided to watch it. Very good movie and do recommend.

    I very much enjoyed this film. I also enjoyed 'Arrival' and the protagonists of the alien species, Abbott and Costello. A very interesting concept of communication between us and the alien species who are not here to eat us or appropriate our resources.

    One of my favorite movies! I never read the novel it was based on but I did read the manga adaptation of the novel before watching the movie. The mimics are pretty different in both, as in the manga you cant kill them besides with a special piston spike weapon (or a giant anime axe lol), and their designs are very diffeent, looking more spherical.
    Honestly I like what they did with the movie mimics more, theyre much easier to kill but that movement is mesmerizing, its so unique. The movie kept the basic concept and had similar character dynamic between the leads but the ending is very different and the two leads have rather diffeent personalities in the manga.
    Also, the character in the movie being Cage is almost certainly taken from "Killer Cage" the name Keiji gets at the end of the manga. Idk how it is in the novel but while the movie is pretty different, taking a more grounded approach, I love both

    most unique in a stretch, def one of the most slept on sci fi films of the 2000's but most unique is pretty wild, i thought in terms of niche uniqueness the arrival aliens were pretty new and something i hadnt seen, as well as annihilation

    This and few other unique aliens in cinemas such as from Nope, Annihilation, and the Thing is what makes "alien" become a different term for space creature aside from simply being humanoid or human-like in my opinion
    Another unique alien I'd like to point out is the ELS (Extraterrestrial Living-metal Shape-shifter) from animated movie Gundam 00 Awakening of the Trailblazer and Coral from the game Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon. These are unique on their own

    I think Annihilation (2018) with Natalie Portman got another great example of how otherworldy aliens can be, in the movie the environment and people within it were physically changing and going crazy by merely existing in the entity's area of effect really cements how dangerous and unpredictable the universe can be and all the things in it.
