Spitfire emotional 'Victory Roll' fly past, East Grinstead, VE Day, May 8th 2020.

  • Spitfire on UK tour circles and 'victory roll' over East Grinstead's Eastcourt and the nearby Queen Victoria Hospital, famous for the wartime surgeon Sir Archibald McIndoe and his 'Guinea Pigs', the men, mainly pilots from many nations suffering burns in conflict were treated there. Adding to the Emotion of the flypast, Covid 19 Virus was taking it's toll, the hospitals under severe pressure and 'lockdown' was place, this the first time people came out for any event in about seven weeks and maintaining the 2 meter distance rules to help stop the spread of infection. Apologies for the focus issues, due to a camera fault which caused it to die just after this!

What an incredible plane. Even young people are amazed by a plane originally designed in 1935-6. The sound of the Merlin engine is mesmerising and iconic. It sounds like a Lion’s roar.

That was terrific, many thanks. I'm down here in Sydney and it was just as emotional as you all experienced. I lived and worked in south London and East Sussex between 1988 and 2010 (my parents were £10 pound Poms to Oz in 1949). I loved my time in UK, it has so much to offer, especially its many facets of its amazing history which one can explore. I was a frequent visitor to the Shuttleworth Collection in Bedfordshire, its collection of aircraft is a must if you have not seen the collection in the air. One memory I have of my time in London is when I was living in Streatham Common in the 90s, one summers day I was out in our lovely backyard and I soon heard an approaching roar and on looking up the BoB Lancaster roared VERY low over the roof tops, starboard wing low as it made a right turn, what a sight and more importantly the sound! Prior to the demise of the BA Concord service, they used to come over where we lived in Streatham and make their turn to go into Heathrow. I have many memories of them on their approach into west London in the early evenings, especially on clear wintery sunny days when we down on earth were in a purple gloom, yet above in the clear sunny skies these white paper darts were bathed golden against a blue backdrop accompanied by an amazing sound of the RR Olympus engines - I knew then I was seeing something pretty special.

Thanks for the feedback Stephen, taken on board. I had used that camera for several years and noticed the focusing glitch, but not as bad as on that day. It is apparently a generic fault on that camera model which for a relatively cheap one has great zoom. It was frustrating knowing that I could have got beautiful closeups of the pilot without the auto focus slipping out. Maybe I will get a Christmas surprise, who knows!
