    You think at first he's not going to go through with the break up - he collapses to his knees for her and it reveals her power over him, but she turns him into a weakened man which he cannot abide by, despite his aching love for her. But he can't even bear looking at her straight when he first does it. He can only face her through the mirror then he turns to the window. For the first time, he realises he's causing real pain. Sure, he's played the game before but it's never backfired like this. It's a devastating scene. He knows he's breaking up with her but he's also breaking up with his own heart, something he thought he had no use for.

    He was torn between his ego and the need for control and his true feelings for Tourvel and a deeper hidden need to love someone honestly. The Marquise de Merteuil saw that he loved this woman and she wanted to see how far he would go to deny his true self. He went all the way and the woman he loved about ended up dead because of it.

      It's more than that, Merteuil was planning to destroy his already tarnished reputation, especially given how he impregnated Cecile. Valmont, whose livelihood and confidence was built on his womanizing didn't want to be weakened by one person, so pride got in the way.

    IMO, "It's beyond my control" is a sentence that expresses more accurately what's going on in the story at that very moment than the original sentence "Ce n'est pas ma faute" (It's not my fault).
    The original one reveals one's character tendency to deflect blame toward someone else.
    Here, it reveals one's character unability to ward off mind games.

      @@syrnvalaekar Right! That's why he doesn't look at her at first. The sentence itself has so many layers. Not only was it originally from Mme de Merteuil, but it gains a new meaning every time he says it, tinted with Mme de Tourvel's reactions: the break-up is not in his control, the situation is no longer in his control, his feelings for her are not in his control, her reactions are no longer in his control, her feelings for him are no longer in his control, his reputation, pride, his relationship with Merteuil, nothing is in his control anymore at this point. Maybe is it even a boomerang line foreshadowing the demise of Mme de Merteuil at the end: the other people are not in her control anymore, and she suffers from her own pride and cruelty, not having an "honorable" death like Valmont's, but having a worse sentence still: shame.

    • @kextrz
      @kextrz ปีที่แล้ว

      I slightly disagree with "beyond my control" being a nicer way of saying "I can't help it".
      The latter suggests a vague/and or complex mental situation the character doesn't really understand.
      The former suggests a situation in which he's well aware he has been manipulated by someone else, and realize too late the harm he has done.

    • @lepetitchat123
      @lepetitchat123 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @kextrz maybe, in the context of the situation on the video. It's said by someone who clearly knows the harm he is inflicting. But in general, I don't know. You seldom hear people say "it's beyond my control".
