  • DUNSTER is a charming village nestled in the heart of Somerset, England, within the Exmoor National Park. Famous for it's castle and yarn market, it boasts a rich history dating back to the Iron Age, evident in the hillforts around the area. With a population of just over 800, Dunster exudes a quintessential English village atmosphere, complete with cobbled streets, thatched cottages, and a magnificent castle overlooking it all.
Dunster Castle: The village's crown jewel is undoubtedly Dunster Castle, an 11th-century fortress originally built by William the Conqueror. Today, it's managed by the National Trust and open to the public, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside and Bristol Channel.
Yarn Market: Dunster's historic yarn market, dating back to the 17th century, is a unique sight. This arcaded building with its distinctive clock tower was once a vital center for the Exmoor wool trade. Now, it houses various shops and cafes, adding to the village's charm.
St. George's Church: This beautiful 15th-century church is known for its impressive carillon of bells, which chime melodious tunes throughout the village. The church's architecture is also worth admiring, showcasing Perpendicular Gothic style.
Exmoor National Park: Dunster sits on the edge of this stunning national park, offering easy access to its diverse landscapes, from rolling hills and moorland to woodlands and dramatic cliffs along the Bristol Channel. Whether you're an avid hiker, cyclist, or simply enjoy breathtaking scenery, Exmoor has something for everyone.
Dunster Water Mill: A historic working watermill dating back to the 12th century, offering demonstrations and insights into traditional milling techniques.
Dunster Tithe Barn: A 14th-century barn now serving as a community venue for events and exhibitions.
Dunster Steep: A winding cobbled lane lined with picturesque shops and cafes, leading up to the castle.
Dunster Beach: A pebble beach just a short drive away, offering stunning coastal views and opportunities for swimming, kayaking, and other water activities.
Whether you're seeking a historical escape, a nature retreat, or simply a charming village experience, Dunster has something to offer everyone. With its rich history, picturesque setting, and abundance of attractions, this Somerset gem is sure to leave a lasting impression.

    Dunster is my ancestral home.
I am descended from the Australian side of the Luttrell family who owned the castle, and surrounding countryside.
I fulfilled a life time dream of staying there in 2012, on a 39 day holiday to the UK, and stuck a £2 coin in the gap of one of the beams of the Yarn Market, which I hope to recover one day 🤞🏻.
    Bringing back wonderful memories.

I was hoping you were going to go down Park street with thatched cottages and the gallox bridge and Mill Lane with the working water mill. But you did a lovely video of Dunster , it was lovely to watch. It’s one of my favourite places but not been for a while. I enjoyed your other Dunster video you did as well…thank you so much.😊

Lovely video! I adore Dunster. Castle Coffee House which you showed in the video near the castle does amazing home made donuts on a Saturday, often themed to the season, like toffee apple donuts for bonfire night. I love the variety old buildings here and their characters. The yarn market is stunning. I have never looked at the inside so closely so really enjoyed looking at it through your lens.

Oh, you missed so many beautiful bits of the village! Medieval Gallox Bridge, the iconic thatched cottages on Park Street, Dunster Mill, Dunster Castle, Tithe Barn, the medieval Dovecote, Conygar Tower and views towards the village and the castle from Conygar Hill! Perhaps come again in the summer time? :)

Good video but I prefer them without the background music. It's hard to find walks without music and it's one of the reasons I liked your videos so much.
