We (Irish!) grew up learning all about Ellis Island, there’s a very famous song - Isle of hope, Isle of tears - give it a listen! A lot of our ancestors travelled over to the island, the first immigrant was Annie Moore from Co. Cork. The famine (Gorta Mor - meaning great hunger) is estimated to have caused around 1 million deaths due to starvation and another 1 million fled Ireland. Between 1845-55 another 2 million fled. Blight affected the potato crops in Ireland as we relied on potatoes as the main food source. But as we were under English occupation and forced to ship out all other food supplies we grew (land owners were the British) like grain.. essentially forcing the Irish to starve. I think it’s why we have always had such a large emigration - many still leave to go to America, Australia ect but we can still feel at home given that out ancestors would’ve travelled to these countries already.
It was great to see you visit the island and appreciate it, it was also nice to see the respect shown. We spend so much of our school years learning about it and it’s always a bit of a shock to me that it isn’t often discussed in British schools! Thank you for the vlog, it was lovely to watch! 💚 x

Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Your correct it is a shame we don’t learn enough about Irish history in English schools. ☺️
