Gurudwara Rori Sahib is in Eminabad, an old town about 55 km north of Lahore and 15 km south of Gujranwala, Pakistan. Guru Nanak Dev Ji came here three times as his maternal grandparents lived in the nearby village of Dera Chahal. Bhai Lalo, a carpenter who lived in Eminabad, earned his living by honest work. One well-known account of Guru Nanak’s life tells of how, when he squeezed the chapatti or bread prepared at Bhai Lalo’s household, milk flowed, whilst blood flowed from the bread of an exploitative local official who had invited Guru Ji to a feast. Guru Ji highlighted that a virtuous mindset should underlie our worldly actions. The town of Eminabad was also violently attacked when the armies of Babur invaded the Punjab in 1521. These invasions had led to Babur overthrowing the Lodhi rulers of India and establishing the Mughal dynasty. Guru Nanak had been present during the attack on Eminabad, where he was captured and taken prisoner. Gurudwara Rori Sahib marks the place where Guru Nanak stayed with Bhai Lalo after the destruction of the town. He lay on a hard bed of stone and rubble, known in Punjabi as ‘ro-ree’. This period is alluded to in the writings of the enlightened Sikh disciple and scribe, Bhai Gurdas.
