    hi richard
    don't forget to fill the tubes with sand, otherwise vermin will get in, the kingfisher will make a corridor in d4 tube to make a nest. in the autumn you can then clean the pipes and fill them with sand again. you then cover the tube opening with a cap, which you remove again in the spring so that the kingfisher can make its nest in it again. good luck with your project.👍

      Thanks very much for watching and for the additional tips. We've since filled one of the tunnels partially and put some mud in the entrance hole to make it more effective. Lets hope we get a visit or two! Cheers Richard 👍

      the best filler for the pipes is sand with loam, or at least sand that sticks together a bit. good luck with your kingfisher project

      @@RichardBirchett A bird working group is active in our region where I live. years ago they placed a swallow wall along the river. it's nice that kingfishers also use it. you have to clean the tubes in the autumn after the birds have left and fill them again with sticky Sand.

    Great video. Very clear and instructive. I built a similar artificial habitat for kingfishers using a fruit juice barrel on a pole. A couple of thoughts. I'd have filled the tunnels with a substrate myself - v. weak lean mix or similar - so the kingfisher can carry out its natural activity and dig its way inside. Second, I'd have installed a somewhat wider board to keep the entrance holes further away from those vertical posts. I'm thinking of how agile predators can be when they're trying to get at something. Best they stretch themselves too far and drop off into the water. Anyway, great stuff all round, nonetheless. I hope your video inspires others so the know how can evolve and develop.

    That's a real labour of love project Richard, did you have to get permission or do you already have the license? Either way I'm looking forward to the future videos on how this develops. I see your rocking the beard now, this in preparation for Canada. I see lot's more photographer's getting involved with conservation work and that's a good thing, only wish more of us were so inclined. Our gardens been developing for years now, nest boxes, bat boxes, dozen feeders, hedgehog house and feeder. We even put the hair from our three maincoons out for the birds to use in their nests. Half our grass is now seeded for wild flowers this year, ulterior motive of course, help the bee's etc and hopefully get some macro shots. 🙂

      Thanks very much, it's a great little project with lots more to come before I head off to Canada! I've not got a licence for Kingfishers and will unlikely get one this year. I will photograph the Kingfishers but well away from the nest. It's great to see people doing that, lets face it the Natural world needs a little helping hand as so much is against them. I just love to be able to make a small difference, just a much of a buzz as is getting a dream shot! Lovely that you are providing habitat too, I do that with the hair from our pets, plus fluff from the tumble dryer, lol.. I'm not a hairy type of chap so growing any sort of facial hair isn't easy, lol... Thought I'd give it a go, probably shave it off when it gets warmer. Thanks for watching, Cheers Rich

    This is a great project, hopefully the ponds will be alive with Kingfishers in a few years. I built 4 nest boxes for a small wooded area in my kids school a month back, they’re up but I haven’t gone back to see if anything has taken a fancy to them yet. We as photographers/nature lovers should take the time to help birds/animals, especially hole nesting birds as the old trees with natural holes are disappearing fast. If we don’t do it, who will ??

    Awesome job Sir, looking forward to positive results to your hard work. You probably have thought about it but my concern was that the predators, mink and the like may be able to climb up the left post and gain access to the nest by stretching across. I hope I don't offend.

      Thanks very much Lindsey, it would be so good if they used it but never any certainty, but it was great fun doing it and to help Nature gives me a real Buzz.. Nice video Richard, I have been watching a Kingfisher on a small river near me. I've heard if you put in a perch they will not be able to resist landing on it. Any tips on where about to put in the perch? There is a small water drop point there and it's slightly deeper. Would this be a good location to put it in? Cheers Lee 📸

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lee, thanks for watching. I've put up several perches at varying heights. Some in the middle of the ponds and some in sheltered spots. The optimum height for the Kingfishers to dive from is around 6-8 feet which works well and allows you to capture that diving shot. Find an area with a nice bit of deep water, pools etc, too shallow and they won't use it. I hope that helps. I did a video on them if you've not watched it. Thanks again Richth-cam.com/video/IKrj9McKuO0/w-d-xo.html
