You guys post content so good that I have to double check if it's actually available for free, lol! I'm glad I've discovered your channel, since I always wanted to learn how to draw fashion illustrations, and I've been enjoying every single video I've watched so far. Hope you guys get waay more subs soon, you all clearly deserve it. xx
Hi there! Hope you're keeping safe and busy. Thanks so much for this comment. We were wondering if you might be happy to talk to us about potentially using this as a testimonial on our platforms? If so, we'd love to hear from you at francesca@patternlab.london. Thanks again.
Hi! This is a fantastic tutorial and it really helped me so much with adding seam allowance to my patterns. Question: do you have a tutorial on how to grade a pattern with seam allowance up and down sizes? Eg, I draft my patterns in size UK10/EU Medium according to my grade plan. I use the move tool, but I would love to see how you do it. Thanks!
We do have a tutorial on grading, but it doesn’t cover the full process. It mainly provides suggestions on how grading might be done using Adobe Illustrator. While the tutorial may be useful for understanding the tools and techniques in Illustrator, it doesn’t go into detail on the grading process itself or teach the necessary grading skills. You can check it out here: th-cam.com/video/9ck_aScUQiE/w-d-xo.html&lc=Ugy13mgYoAFG_KpzKYx4AaABAg Either way, it might be useful to you.
Is there a way to select only sections of lines to offset or will it treat line segments as objects? I'd like to have different seam allowances in different areas... like along a neckline.
Yes of course! We have a video tutorial for this: patternlab.london/home/project/add-different-seam-allowance-adobe-illustrator-pattern-making-project/
Great question! Cut your block (scissor tool) into the areas that you would like to add different seam allowance then use different "Offset" values. For example, If you would like to add 1cm to the neckline, cut the neckline from the block using the scissor tool. Next, select the neckline, open the offset path tool and add 0.5cm to the "offset" field input box. Similarly, add a different seam allowance to the side seam, by cutting the side seam from the rest of the block, open the offset path tool and add 2.5cm to the "offset" input box. Give it a try and let me know how you get on.
It shouldn't but you can always change the line thickness using the stroke tool. In the right menu, open the stroke tool dialogue box. Using the small selection tool (white arrow, left toolbar) select the lines you want to change. You can always hold down the shift key to queue up your selections. Once you have selected your lines, go to the stroke dialogue box and change the value of the stroke to either 1pt or 2pt. You can change the stroke width of all of your lines in this way. Hopefully this helps? Good luck with your project!
@@PatternLabLondon yes it did. First I had to cancel the fill and reduce the thickness. Then I used the direct selection tool to delete the inside lines, I only needed the bigger one for the allowance . Thank you super greatful that you were able to reply to this
Hi Jane. Learning new skills or embarking on big projects can be tough, especially when you've only just started. Just break it down into little pieces and work through it when you feel motivated. You'll be drafting digital patterns in no time at all! Good luck and enjoy it. It's exciting to learn a new skill.
Hi Nikki, Do you mean remove the seam allowance or add an inside line reducing the size of your pattern? If you wish to remove the seam allowance, simply select the seam allowance using the "small selection" tool (white arrow). Once selected, hit the backspace key on your keyboard a few times. This will delete the seam allowance leaving the actual pattern line.
@@PatternLabLondon Why everytime I click offset it’s applied on both outside and inline of the pattern? How can I get it only on the outside like yours?
Thank you for this! It's exactly what I was looking for.
WOW! Thanks for posting. I'm an independent learner but using an open source software, you have just saved me bags of time!
Glad I could help!

No worries. Thanks for the fantastic comment!
Thank you for the tutorial. I use Inkscape since it’s free but the same concepts apply. Excited to try this out

Are there tutorials that are not filmed in black?
Filmed in black?
Hi, I made my patterns with the seam allowance included. Is there a way to just make an inside line?

Put a negative before the offset distance number and it will draw the line inside your shape instead of outside.
