    Yes, we use military time but it is not very common and it is used in a formal context. To use it just make the rule Hour+Minutes plural, and make sure you learn the numbers from 12 (doce) to 24 (veinticuatro) to give the hour.
    Sería, por ejemplo: Son la trece horas, quince minutos (Es la una y cuarto). Son las veintidós horas, veinte minutos (Son las diez veinte), and so on.

    When you tell time on the plus side of the minutes, i.e. 1 to 29, you are adding the minutes. Therefore, 3:05 am /pm is "Son las tres y cinco de la
    mañana OR de la tarde." In other words, you need to use the "y" in between the hour and the minutes.

      @@ronarce771 Yes, I used to live on the Mexican border and Spanish speakers there omitted the "y" unless using media or cuarto but did not use "y" with the minutes. I also never heard the use of "menos" like they teach in Spanish classes in the US: Son las siete menos diez was not used but like the teacher said - Son diez para las siete or faltan diez para las siete or son las seis cincuenta.

      These are the different ways to say that time:
      Son las doce y cuarenta (It's 12:40)
      Son veinte para la una (It's 20 to 1)
      Son veinte minutos para la una (It's 20 minutes to 1)
      Es la una menos veinte [ It's 1 minus 20 minutes] [Round to the next hour & take away the minutes] ; This approach is no longer used I believe, but only works for the the left side of the clock dealing with above 30 minutes]
      ** You would say UNA because we are referring to the hour (la hora= the hour [ singular] & it's a feminine noun).
      You would only say "para LAS _____" if the hour that follows it is 2-12, or the plural hours.

    In Spain we say the time quite different than that. I don't know in Latin American countries, but here we don't use 9:00am or 9:00pm. We say 9:00 (in the morning) and 21:00 (in the evening/night). And also, we don't say 9:45 the way it's said here. We say 9:35 (Diez menos veinticinco), 9:40 (Diez menos veinte), 9:45 (Nueve menos cuarto), 9:50 (Diez menos 10) and 9:55 (Diez menos cinco).

    I'm traveling in Costa Rica right now. Yesterday sitting in the water on a surf board, one of the local surfers asked me in English for the time. I decided I would reply in Spanish and how I learnt it was "son las once menos veinte". It is a correct way. However he giggled and gave me a fist bump. "Mi buen amigo, en Costa Rica puedes decir 'veinte para las once" : just like it's being taught in this video. I had to come home to check Butterfly to see how it is being taught. It's not until you travel do you learn more about the real everyday Spanish; if you don't mind reading: here's another example: I was sitting having lunch and this man asked for a "frio", I watched the waitress bring back a tin of fanta. I thought strange then that night, I was ordering some food when she asked me "que frio quiere": forgetting that I had heard that phrase earlier today, I was eh? How cold do I want?, "Como?" "que frio quiere" and she pointed to the fridge. Ah which soda would I like. This is taking my enjoyment of Spanish to a new level and I am more enthusiastic to keep learning more and more. Every day is a School Day. Pura Vida

    • @MiguelGirard
      @MiguelGirard 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I disagree. One cannot speak Spanish using the argument "in English we say" it like this. Otherwise we'd be putting adjectives before nouns too.

    • @aslsm9736
      @aslsm9736 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely agree; they are different languages and it would be incorrect to argue grammar based on another language. I've also noticed that some things are similar across languages while other things are very different which is why it's less surprising that "Son las dos diez" is one of multiple ways to communicate time.

    • @MiguelGirard
      @MiguelGirard 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hahaha... Being trilingual myself, I often think in Spanish when speaking French. Fortunately, both languages share a common root and with some exceptions, they can be superimposed. However, when attempting that with French/English, or Spanish/English, the results can range from comical to downright disastrous. Having said this, I don't want to discourage anyone from learning. The videos are indeed very helpful.

      ...and vice versa, if it is 12:45, is it son quarto para una or with es ... ?

    • @carlosd.a.9257
      @carlosd.a.9257 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Peebles
      In Spanish:
      - 1: 40. The hour 1 is una. Always. If it is the hour "1" or "13", we say una.
      But minutes is uno.
      It is our way.
      - 2:01. Las dos y uno. Las dos y un minuto.
      - 13:59. Las dos menos uno. Las dos menos un minuto. La una y 59. La una y 59 minutos.
      The way to say "what time is it" when the minutes are past the first 30 ones:
      We do it as we do because is the way we learned in early stages of our Math classes.
      30 - 1. We say 30 menos uno.
      So... 20:48 can be: Las 9 menos 12. Las 9 menos 12 minutos.
      CUARTO.
      In terms of minutes: 15 = cuarto. 30 = media.
      We say 1/4 = un (1) cuarto (/4).
      1 x (1/4) = un cuarto.
      60 minutes / 15 = 4. So, there are 4 cuartos in 1 hour. 4 x (1/4) = 1.
      - 5:45. Son las 6 menos cuarto.
      We don't say "las 6 menos un cuarto".
      Nor "las 6 menos cuarto minutos".
      "6 menos cuarto" comes from:
      6 - 1/4. Overriding the word "un".
      MEDIA.
      1/2. We say un medio.
      1 x (1/2) = un medio. Uno por un medio es (=) un medio.
      Then why we say media to explain 30 minutes?
      Because "hour" is femenin for us. Media hora. Your "half an hour" = our "media hora".
      We think "media hora" but we say only... "media". Las 5 y media. 5:30.
      That is our logic inside our language.
      "Logic" cannot be compared between 2 languages.
      You can compare logic within your language, only.
      Because there is not a reference in terms of languages.
      And when we are compairing things... we need a reference.
      So... English cannot be compaired with Spanish. Nor Spanish with English.
      Each language has its own logic.
      We always say hours and then minutes... not minutes to hours.
      In other kind of conversations, yes.
      You can say in Spanish:
      "Hurry up, John! 6 minutes left to..." (08:54).
      The one and only case we say minutes before the hour.
      "¡Corre, Juan! Faltan 6 minutos para...".
      But, in terms of "what time is it"...
      First the hours and 2nd, the minutes. Always.

    12: 10 ...Son las doce y diez....you are missing the "y" Never heard anyone say son las doce diez. It's grammatically incorrect.

    • @intlbrian4369
      @intlbrian4369 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Atleast here in Mexico City, it's without "y".

    • @georgezee5173
      @georgezee5173 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I was surprised at that too. In fact, at least in Spain, we use that "y" to sometimes shorten the expression to just saying "son y cinco", "son y veinte", etcetera, if it's impliedthe person who asks already knows the hour (obviously, it depends totally on the context).

    • @Maria63641
      @Maria63641 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Intl Brian but it is still incorrect and if you are going to teach proper Spanish , which is the type of Spanish teachers should teach the “y” should be used . Have a good day

      @@Maria63641 On the street and in real life, grammatically correctness doesn't exist. It's like English teachers confusing their poor ESL students with the importance of 'who' versus 'whom'. Even native English speakers don't bother, and that kind of grammatical nitpicking destroys the confidence of ESL students.
      Even worse, no one speaks that way except in language teacher circles. I'd get laughed at for telling time that way in Mexico City. They would understand me, but give me a weird look, and if we were friends, might even correct me by saying "guey... nada más di 'son las doce diez' sin la 'y', es más común" (translation: "dude... just say it's twelve ten without the 'and', it's more common").
