I totally get what you're saying about many guitarists struggling to give authentic voice to playing blues. Phrasing, lyricism, and personalizing it make all the difference in the world to me. There are a few rock guitarists that play the blues very well and they all put their own stylistic twist on it. The first one I would mention is Roy Buchanan who played some of the most haunting and resonant blues guitar I've ever heard. Then there's Duane Allman with his infectious, soulful slide. Jeff Beck is another brilliant player that on his best work incorporated elements of jazz and fusion into his blues playing creating a style that is at once cerebally stimulating and emotionally charged. Lastly, and this is one who's often overlooked because he's more known for hard rock and neoclassical but Ritchie Blackmore is also a phenomenal blues player in his own right. His lyrical phrasing and melodic sensibility are superb and he incorporates elements of medieval and renaissance ballads and dirges this ads a poetic minstrel quality to the playing and elevates dramatic and emotional intensity. Live performances of Mistreated, Catch the Rainbow, Temple of the King, Son of Alerik and Wasted Sunset are all good examples of this as is his diatinct slide imfused solo on Stargazer. All of these guitarists also have unique styles and sounds and are instantly recognizable.Their personality and voice come through in the notes. Like Rodney says you have to make it your own and express authentic style and emotion. There are so many skilled guitarists out there, in all genres, that seem to struggle with developing this. I think to a certain extent phrasing is more art than science and must be cultivated... There is a dearth of unique players across all musical genres these days and far too much homegenization. Keep fighting the good fight!
