      You hit it on the nail mate; to make something you want from something that's being dumped. That's exactly what was happening with the table leg. As soon as I saw it upside down I knew what I could do with it and chucked in the back of the car!
      And yes, you're right. Pie was one of the family for seventeen good years. She was a thoroughly professional mouser and kept the workshop rodent free for years just by strutting around in there. She knew her trade alright. Thanks for your kind words. Cheers mate.

    Great Job Mark! I’ve always liked lighthouse’s! Your table leg idea was brilliant 👍👀👍 …. I’ll never look at a discarded table leg the same way! Soooooo coooool 👍😎👍 Thanks!

      Thanks so much Kev! Yes, this one seems to have been very appealing to a lot of folks. Perhaps I should start looking through my big junk pile with an imaginative eye and try another objet-trouvé project. In the meantime thanks for always looking in mate.

    What a perfectly lovely lighthouse! I've always been enamored of them myself and have been to visit several up and down the coast of Washington and Oregon in the USA. Thank you for sharing. You are wonderfully talented!

      Thank you Cindy, and thanks to looking in, I honestly appreciate it. I'm beginning to realise that our affection for lighthouse is actually fairly common if not universal! I wonder what it is that we all find so calming and reassuring...
      I don't know that I'm a talented or able person - I just keep blundering along until the job looks finished. My reason for sharing my project s on YT is that if I can do it anyone can and to encourage everyone to try. Thanks again for looking in, I hope you'll take a look at some of my other vids, I think they'll make you smile.

      Thanks Gøran, I can't express how much I value your support. Yes, this was a very enjoyable build, no awkward problems or design flaws! The only problem I encountered was the solar powered lights which I cobbled together from an old garden lamp and some fairy lights - it took me a while to remember that the D in LED is diode and that it matters which way you connect them across the voltage. All that education wasn't wasted on me mate, I can tell you. Cheers Gøran and thanks again. Love to you both.

    A lovely project Mark. We also have a fondness for lighthouses. i think your use of bits and bobs from plastic tub of miscellaneous is great. Herself saw the video and I may be under pressure to create another all the way down under, Cheers keep on keeping on.

      It's becoming clear to me Bernie that the popularity of lighthouses is a greater and more widespread than I knew. Our cabinetmaker neighbour even commented on ours and he's hard to impress! Now his wife wants one too. I think I may have started something here... Thanks for looking in Bernie, I always appreciate it. See you over at Clint Rose's channel next time he posts.

      Thanks so much Harold, and thanks for always looking in, it's a real encouragement. You know, we've just been looking at the lighthouse this morning and the very wet weather we've had this Autumn has really bashed it, and much worse than I expected. I might be making another one sooner than I thought! Thanks again Harold.

    Hi Mark, I don't know how I missed this one... well, actually, I do. When you posted this I decided to keep it until I was less busy and then had a load of family medical stuff here and a funeral in Cork so it kinda slipped my mind... which is extremely easy to do. That lighthouse looks great and was a lovely project to watch with some tidy turning it it! I'm sorry to learn about your little mate but you gave her a good life and she worked well for you so you both won.
    Love and Best Wishes to you both,
    Brendan.

      Brendan, thanks for looking in mate. I know what you mean about setting things aside for late and then life gets in the way - I mean how difficult could it be for us to find a mutual lunch date! I'd no idea I was such a busy person! Did you see the carcass of the lighthouse when we ate at Eddie's? I've got indoors for the winter now - it needs a lot more waterproofing than I thought it would... And yes, I miss Pie a lot more than I thought I would. That's life. Cheers mate, love to Rosie and let's eat early in the New Year.

      Thank you so much for looking in sir! And for your very kind words. I'm afraid that the tiny parts did not work out as neatly as I'd hoped but the job was getting later and later so I had to compromise a little. Sometimes the painting is very enjoyable but eventually it becomes, as you so wisely say, laborious! Thanks again, I really appreciate you always looking in!

      It's always so good to hear from you Al, thanks so much for looking in. Glad to hear you enjoyed this one. Kath had the idea years ago but it took stumbling on the table leg for the thing to happen. Is that what they call serendipity? Or per laziness? I'll let you decide.
      Yes, I'll miss Pie a lot, even though she did have a predilection for running under your feet. This is the first time in thirty two years we haven't had a cat. Luckily Pie's nemesis, a handsome big lad nicknamed Black Jake, still prowls about from time to time so we're fixed for a rodent deterrent, temporarily anyway. Needless to say I hope everything is going swimmingly for you. All our love and God's greatest blessings.

Love the box of bits ,we all have those to sort out for the "Ah just what I want"moment Superb job on transforming an old leg into a light house that lights up and boy, does it look great placed in its new home with its idylic scenic backdrop.Sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved Pie ,its always hard when we lose a much loved pet. My Dad had a half dozen of those biscuit tins full of bolts and brackets and as a kid I always thought they were junk. Now I think ot them as treasure chests - there's nearly always something in there that'll get you out of a hole, temporarily anyway.
      I'm fascinated to hear about the model boat - can you send me a picture?
      And you're right about pets; they're part of the family too and sometimes just as hard to lose. Nearly seventeen years leaves an impression. Thanks for understanding. Cheers mate and love to you both. Stay healthy.

      Thank you Lizzie, coming from someone of your ability and imagination that's most valuable praise and I appreciate it greatly. Actually I wish I'd spent a lot more time on the details; my Mum bought a new big wifi telly over the weekend and we watched this vid when Kath and I called this afternoon. I hadn't seen it on anything bigger than my phone (I edit with a tiny editing window) and was appalled at how shabby those wee arched windows look! Oh well, it'll drive me to try harder next time. Thanks again.

      Thanks so much Huw - it's nice to know that someone actually reads the description! Thanks Val, I can't tell you how much I appreciate those kind words. We've had lots of cats over the thirty two years that Kath and I have lived here but Pie was our Pest Control Officer for just over half that time and she'll be greatly missed. I would never think of myself as a cat owner - cats own people if you ask me - but she was a workshop colleague and family member. Still, she had a good long life and will be fondly recalled. It'll be quite a few months before we think of replacing her. Thanks again and thanks so much for always looking in.

    I love those Irwin pump clamps (are they called pump clamps?) they're so handy. I love this idea mate and you pulled it off so well, really suits that part of the garden. Just gotta make a few little ships now!

    • @MarkMcCluney
      @MarkMcCluney  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When I first saw them I thought they'd be a weak-as-water novelty sort of thing but after ten years of using them almost daily I couldn't function without speed clamps now. Screw clamps definitely produce more squeezing force but these are convenient and easy to handle and have plenty of grip. (I hope Irwin are reading all this...)
      Yeah, wee boats! That's a terrific idea! Cheers Clint and thanks for looking in mate. I really appreciate it.

    Another fantastic project Mark, lighthouse looks really cool! You did well with that paint too, 1991?! Surprised it hadn't sprouted legs and wandered off in that time! A very enjoyable watch mate, thanks for sharing. So sorry for your loss, went through the same this time last year with my moggy who was nearly 19 years old, sad times. Take care!

    • @MarkMcCluney
      @MarkMcCluney  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks so much Tim. Yeah, back everyone painted their house Magnolia and for some reason we complied. I was glad when it was repainting time so I could get rid of it. Anyway the paint came in handy as undercoat for a splosh of white over the top. The weather hasn't been kind to it though so the whole thing is back in the workshop again for a much needed tidy up. So much for the 'weather-proof' masonry paint!
      And pets definitely become family members. Their passing is almost as bad as people. Thanks again mate.

      Thanks Tom, that's a very kind remark and I really appreciate it. As to how long it took, well Kath's been asking me for years so I guess I'd have to admit to that long! Once I found that big table leg and got the time to work on it I'd guess about a week or two. The main structure and turning part was done in a day but all the little details were dreadfully time-consuming. Thanks again for your comment and always looking in, I genuinely appreciate it.
