    We finally found a bird that MaryCarl didn't have- BEFORE- a Screech Owl. That will handle your mouse and rat problem but you are going to have to keep netting over the chicken and duckling yards because that little guy will pick them off one at a time.
    Peaches called. She said that she wants you to be sure to freeze-dried persimmon chips for her so that she can have a Winter Supply. She said that, now that you have two persimmon trees, she just cannot eat them all in one sitting.

    I'm in a freeze dryer facebook group. Tons of experienced people that have tried freeze drying just about anything you can imagine! My boss purchased a Harvest Right 2 years ago and we have an arrangement: I'm in charge of freeze drying what he buys for his long-term food storage, and in return I get to use it for my own food storage.

    • @rhondaalbrecht

      That's a service I'm going to offer people at the local Farmer's Market... freeze-dry their excess produce, or freeze dry my own and sell it that way, as 'survival food' products, grown locally and organically. It'll pay for itself in no time. Even hubby is now getting excited because he's been watching all of these homesteader videos with folks with the Harvest Right machines. He sees the potential.

    I hope the owl doesn't eat the poisoned rats or mice!Take up the poison & let the owl take care of them & earn her keep! As long as she's in the barn, you'll be rodent free. She sure is sweet! I love using my dehydrator, but I hadn't heard of a home freeze dryer. Now I want one!!! God bless y'all!!!🦉❤🍓

    • @rhondaalbrecht
      @rhondaalbrecht 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've got mine being built now. Contact Harvest Right (be sure to use Cog Hill's promo code), put one on layaway... you pay down the first $1,000 in payments you can afford, spread out over time, and when you hit that threshold, they'll start building it. It will take 10-12 weeks, they're so backlogged right now because the demand has shot through the roof to get one, in today's market instability, for them to build one, and you can pay the balance off over that time period so that when they're finished building it, you've got it paid off. Free shipping going on, too. It includes the mylar bags, the oxygen absorbers, and the sealer in the cost of the machine. You get to pick the type of vacuum pump (there's 3 of them... you'll pay extra for the 2nd and 3rd tier pumps). There is SOOOO much potential with these machines, and you'll find that you'll be using it more than the dehydrator, simply because you're not using as much energy cost, not losing as much nutrition, and it looks better than the dehydrated results.

    Years ago I bought a farmhouse on 4 acres. In the weeds I found an old abandoned strawberry bed about 75ft X 10ft. So I ran a piece of fencing to close it in and bought 4 baby geese. When they were big enough, we turned them out into the old bed, they cleaned out all the weeds, and fertilized. When berries appeared, we put them in a different pen. We enjoyed the biggest, sweetest strawberries I've ever had. I picked 2 quarts of berries and took them to the lady that had owned and planted that strawberry bed (two owners between). She was absolutely thrilled.

Occasionally she'd give us one of the little hershy bar squares then share the rest next time we were there. We we Tennessee Mt. Hillbillies. I am still! Oh the stories from Grandma's house! You can afford the small one... do it on layaway... a payment plan that accumulates until you get to the threshold of $1,000, and they'll start building it. It'll be 10-12 weeks before they get it finished, because of the backlog they've got, they're that far behind on assembly. They build them on demand, not to have in inventory sitting, tying up resources. In the time period of the construction of the machine, you can pay off the balance of the machine. Then, you can work with the kids, or even offer to freeze-dry for your neighbors, friends, in exchange for cash, or for a share of the product produced. It'll pay for itself very, very quickly, you'll find out.

    Fun tip about Hosta. You can eat them, right in spring when there growing but still rolled up and close to the ground can cut them off and cook like asparagus. Fun yard food!

    Our favorite thing to freeze-dry is meat. We put the meat in ball jars with dried peas carrot cubes ect for stew.

    Two duck eggs, strawberry feastings, a barn owl, and a freeze drying machine all in one video. Around here, strawberries don't last long. you slice the strawberries then put a light coat of cream cheese icing on top and the optional chocolate. Ten chill maybe.

    I saw a recipe for freeze dried veggies where they freeze-dried peas, carrots, etc mixed together and then the put them in a mason jar with an oxygen absorber and just closed the lid- didn’t have to seal it. Then whenever they wanted to make soup over the winter, they just dumped the jar in their broth. Super cool.
    Also I’ve seen freeze dried veggies as crunchy salad toppers.

    You can blitz the strawberries up to powder in a blender or food processor. Strawberry powder is amazing in baked goods.

    You may want to check out videos at Living Traditions Homestead about the freeze dryer. They did several about eggs, snacks, meat, lots of veggies. She cans a lot too. They plan to do long-term packaging too for when their gardens are smaller.

    Scramble a dozen raw eggs, you'll have a dozen fresh eggs for cooking or eating in the winter and for things like camping. Freeze dry fresh meat, vacuum seal it and it won't need to be kept frozen to remain fresh. Just add water and throw it on the grill to cook. Dehydrate your collared greens for cornbread and have it out of season too. Leftover meals can become portion sized and stored for quick meals. And they don't need a lot of electricity to run a batch. Freezing your foods ahead of time will take the dehydrator less time to finish.

    Just a tip to try, we both have kitchen garden on a slope, and as you know with heavy rain the top layer are flushed down to the bottom part or even out of the garden. Just before the next rain try to layer some hay/straw/leaves on top of the soil on a few m2 as a test, and just watch the huge difference. It stops erosion so you would not believe it, and the soil are not compacted in the rain. Just try out on a little part and see the difference for yourself. Seeing is believing. :o) You can collect and compost it between the green before you till the soil, so it does not tie up the nitrogen while it compost in the soil. I know you love experimenting and testing out new stuff, and my experience is that straw is a game changer.
