    We grow numerous named varieties of H. paniculata in our Southern Ohio garden and we prune in late winter (did it today March 4, 2018). I think I've looked at just about every Hp pruning video on the internet and this is by far my favorite. I replay it each year on the morning before I go out to prune. Instructs are clear and concise. Thank you very much Brad - much appreciated!

    Thank you, this is very helpful. We have a beautiful one, but I have never known how to prune it. Your explanations and showing what you are doing at the same time are great. I now feel very confident about pruning this fabulous bush.

    Thank you for this great video. I learned a lot about pruning this type of shrub. Quick question. Can this shrub be pruned early spring as well. So, let's say, you don't prune it in the fall and you leave all the flowers on it until the spring. is this a problem at all? What are the consequences for waiting until the spring to prune the shrub? Thanks!

      +Linda Brokopp Great question. I actually prefer to prune panicle Hydrangeas in the Spring. We tend to do all our pruning in the fall at the nursery because we have time to do it in the fall, and spring is so busy. There are no "con's" do pruning in the spring. In fact, there is a benefit: You only touch the plant once, reducing maintenance. If you prune in fall, often there will be additional die back that you need to tidy up in Spring. If you wait until spring, you can take care of all the deadheads, prune for good structure and also remove any die-back all in one fell swoop. I hope that answers your question! -Brad

      Awesome. Thanks for responding. I will trim my hydrangeas today because I waited. I'm glad that I did.

    Great instructions.
    When is the time to purn it in Zone 8? Some people say right after Thanksgiving. Some say Feb-Mar.

    I know this is An old video but was hoping to get your guidance on pruning my very young little lime hydrangea tree? The stems so spindly and all bending to one side. Any advice would be much appreciated! :)

    Wow, you're fast! tee hee. I'm in Harwich on the mainland. Do you ever remove entire old branches right down to the ground to allow light to the base and to spur new main stems?

    Hi there, i just have a question. Why do you prune your hydrangea in autumn? Has it any influence on the growing of the next year? Because they look marvellous during winter time when unpruned.

    • @SurfingHydrangeanurseryinc
      @SurfingHydrangeanurseryinc  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there. Great question. It so happens that we have available man power at the nursery this time of year, so it makes sense for us to do our dormant pruning leading into winter. There is absolutely no harm to the plant if it is left unpruned until spring. In fact, many gardeners prefer to do pruning in spring, when the plant is just waking up. If you prefer to enjoy the spent flower heads over the winter, by all means leave them standing until spring. Thanks! Brad

      Well, that makes sense to me. Thanks for your reply. I just asked because I bought one recently for my garden. Its called Magical Himalaya, a wonderful plant.

    great video, thanks! how old is this plant? and does it get full sun?

    • @SurfingHydrangeanurseryinc
      @SurfingHydrangeanurseryinc  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carolina, these plants have been in the ground at least 10 years. There were at the nursery before I started seven years ago. They are planted in full sun, as you say. Panicle Hydrangeas do very well in full sun. If grown in shade, they tend to get floppy.
