Sharing the stage with Sting... man that must be something, so happy for you Tom! My band opened for Sting a couple of years ago and it was definitely one of life's highlights.
John Hiatt is also one of my all-time favorites. So great that you get to hang out with all these amazing people. All the hard work over the years paying dividends. Glad you are able to enjoy all these great times as a result. You can put me in the "freak out mentally and physically" category when trying to play fast. LOL. It's a work in progress. Awesome lesson with some great takeaways! Thanks!
Thanks much again. Never cease to amaze with knowledge, talent and wisdom. In this lesson, you have vindicated what I learned taking classical guitar class in college that I have always tried to apply to my meager playing - one finger per fret, and do not ignore the pinky.
Congrats Buko on the gig with Sting! That’s amazing. Really happy for you man! It’s a wonderful thing when you meat a hero and they turn out to be as cool as you imagined in your head. Like when I met Carlton Fisk the first time in 1978. Or when I met this Uncle Larry cat behind the loading dock of the Cabot Theater in Beverly MA. ;)
Had the privilege of watching Vince last night in Ottawa from the side of the stage (with the rest of the birds..) before my load out roadie gig.. surreal to see them all just feet away from me. Will watch for you on the tribute show! Thanks for the lesson.. my pinkie is my weak link for sure
Uncle Larry, the intro jam here was so gnarly and refined as well, I love this style, thank you for embodying it and teaching us. Your journey is inspiring! Dispatch master is a great one, learnt about it after you named it 'the best reverb pedal' in one of your old videos...thanks for the advice, amazing as always
Of all that is good & green on this earth. You really know how to rally the spirit while making me think through the approach to the whole thing over. You’ve been a gem & a little guiding light since I started watching in 2020. Thank you for the videos man

I knew you had a Dave Cobb connection (sold him a guitar, according to his Rig Rundown) but having Chris hang out at your house back in the day ... holy crap. He's like Zeus of the song writers. Anecdotes very welcome. Or you can save them for the Session Man biography we all want to buy some day. A wonderful run of videos since Germany. Just a joy. Thanks so much.
Tom, I saw Sting last week in upstate NY. I gotta go back there and find my jaw which is still there on the floor somewhere. He’s a master, a genius. And man did he bring it. Killer band too of course.
Just got back from my Nashville trip. Sends shivers down my spine there was THAT (Vince) gig in the town while I was there. Would give a liver to see that.

Learning guitar by myself, I gradually noticed the practicality of the 4 fingers / 4 frets rule you mentioned, but it is reassuring to hear you mention it Tom! Thanks so much for the tips.
A good friend of mine who studied classical guitar and who taught me guitar - in one of my first lessons - said, "every horse has its stable" - teaching exactly what Jaco and Uncle Larry were discussing. Great stuff here for sure.
One of the things i love about your channel is the passion you have for music in general. All kinds of music. Its contagious.Your appreciation and kind words for the blue grass guys was genuine... they kicked ass.. keep it comming Tom...
I remember jamming with you and Andy Lee on Tampa Drive years ago. You are still an amazing player. I would love to see you again sometime if I get back to Nashville. So good to see and hear you again.
Tempus Fugit is probably my favorite Yes song. The imagery created by the lyrics and rhyme scheme. How everything feeds into the theme of time flying. It's brilliant!
A million people have now heard Tom play that intro and can now sit down with it and play it after a bit. Only a few of those people can actually hear something like that first and bring it into the world. That's what the true gift is. That's what makes certain session players who can find a 'part' so valuable.

You talking about playoff g behind Sting, and the experience, I’ve been backstage many many times with these amazing artists, and damn, I have so many pinch me moments. Hi Tom, Good to hear you reference the Jaco video. I still have copy and accompanying book and still work through it as part of my practice routine for bass. Home Skoolin is awesome.
Great tips Tom. I remember early on how to play soft and quiet by holding the guitar tight against my body and softly relaxing to allow the sound to grow and use the edge of my elbow to tip the guitar away from me so the back would be free and only bottom edge touching my hip for full sound. It's amazing how that idea applies to all types of guitars, it doesn't matter whether it's acoustic, electric, hollow, semi-hollow, even resonators. Of course you notice it more on an acoustic, but a good sounding electric really rings in the open air.👌 That short clip at the end is a cool memory Tom, the distinct vocal pitch change as you were playing was awesome!🤙
I've seen all your videos, and each one is great for one or more reasons: your humor, your skill, your behind-the-scenes stories, your humility, your focus on techniques that aren't commonly discussed, your love for your heroes, etc. This video was great for ALL those reasons. This is one I'd show to folks new to the channel. Thank you!
Dude. You killed it all night at the Irsay thing, but “Stairway” was outta control. It was a joy to watch you have so much fun (while goofing with your son, no less) while being the coolest cat in the room. Weird gig, but you were the shit.
YES! I love my Dispatch master! What a great recommendation for Chris. I would love to hear what he would come up with, you know it would be amazing!!!
Thanx again Tom for the amazing videos you put out! And congratulations on the Sting thing! I used to dream that wasp would appear at my house and play a show in my room when i was a kid. Dude that pinky always catches my eye and mezmerizes me like one of those cobras in the baskets...also keep thinking it was the stunt finger for e.t. back in the day...tehehee...
Wow that's amazing that you played with Sting! Incredible. That guy won life I think. What a legend. I use all my fingers when I play and I don't shy away from the pinkie. But I break the one finger to a fret rule sometimes to get hard grabs that are super musical and I would otherwise not be able to play. I'm impatient to get the music out and I'll take "short cuts" to get there. But I'm working on it, always a finger to a fret when practicing.
Hi Tom, I like these rhythm and technique breakdowns a lot. Also, your explanation of chord extensions is very helpful (talking about the recent James Honeyman-Scott) when coming up with chord progressions. Thanks again!
This is one of the richest videos you have done Uncle Larry, don't even know where to star. Your gratitude for your life is humbling. There is hope for me yet as a finger per fret guy, insights into acoustic playing, hearing Sting and you chatting....LOVE your ability to hold music and football in the same time, man, today's infusion of the Buko is so good!
It’s funny you mention the 4 finger thing. For years I was an SRV wannabe clone. But recently I started practicing my scales with my pinky. Then I sprained my pinky really bad on a staircase railing. It’s healing now in a way where I have more dexterity but my muscle memory is shot. This video reiterates that I can’t stop practicing with my pinky. Especially using and learning the major scale. Which I didn’t do for 20 years. I know sad right. Anyway… thank you!!!
once upon a time I deep dived trying to get great tone out of acoustics. Your thoughts reminded me of that... the big difference I found was plywood guitars don't care as much but a solid wood guitar - the back vibrates as much as the front. You've got to get your belly off of it and they make these stick on arm rests for the front to keep your arm off the front so the guitar can 'sing'. Then you go through a bunch of strings to find what THAT guitar really likes... and then you sell it and go back to a Fender combo and realize you'll never be Leo Kottke.

You are making my heart very happy playing that lick. Going to have to go crank that song up now for a listen! I'll go ahead and inject that my very first record album was Genesis Duke, as recommended by Brion Lefttwich who was in Counterpoint. Helluva guitarist himself in KC. I bow to my mentors. Started playing when I was 13. So, 50yrs now. I’m self taught(tight?). I recall thinking, “Okay, this guitar thing looks like it’s a very logical thing.” Yep. 4-fingers, 4-frets. At 13yrs old, the word “logic” became my weapon of choice. JJZ…(°¿.°`)
Too many cool things to comment on today. But as a Guitar player and teacher for close to fifty years, all I can say Tom is, much respect Uncle Larry...
Ditto on the 'guitar in space'....I noticed when I saw Hedges play how he let Barbara just hang on its strap, out away from his body. Makes total tonal sense.
Uncle Larry, thank you for calling out a few weeks back that no one reads your notes posted to each video. In All honesty I didn’t even know they were there. I now always read the notes !
Thom always plays that exact same guitar when Radiohead plays Bloom live. Therefore it is an extremely sick guitar. Congratulations on owning one, too, Mr. Bukovac. 🕶
Love Jazzmasters!! I had this very guitar but had the pickguard removed and vinyl wrapped so mine is white on white. Of course it doesn't sound like THIS when I feebly play it... Sadly my cable package doesn't include CMT so I won't get to see it.
Rumour has it that Sting is telling everybody that he played with that uncle Larry last night
😂😂
Yes. He mentioned that while he was having a bunless avocado burger with Brett this morning.
Sting should be honored 👍

20 9 8 19 25 12 15 8 (VH chalkboard HFT alpha backwards) You go Uncle Larry! From one Sag to another, Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your incredible experiences with the class. This is magical!🤘🎸🐝🍻
love the lesson videos! so practical and improve my playing tremendously..your guitar secrets are priceless, thank you for all that you share
Another great lesson Tom! Thanks!!!
that's really good Tommy!!

Too many cool things to comment on today. But as a Guitar player and teacher for close to fifty years, all I can say Tom is, much respect Uncle Larry...
Brilliant.
Ditto on the 'guitar in space'....I noticed when I saw Hedges play how he let Barbara just hang on its strap, out away from his body. Makes total tonal sense.
Got your “ears lowered “…ay..?.. and CONGRATS on the Sting Thing..!!! You deserve it.! Paid your dues..✊🏼
Bukovac. 🕶
I think you should call that intro tune ‘Al Anderson takes Bill Frisell for Ice Cream’….
Uncle Larry thought you liked Fall, sounds like surfing tune's got that Vic Flirth vibe! Man of Bond James Bond
Love Jazzmasters!! I had this very guitar but had the pickguard removed and vinyl wrapped so mine is white on white. Of course it doesn't sound like THIS when I feebly play it... Sadly my cable package doesn't include CMT so I won't get to see it.
