    I have the Enya concert size, and I love it. The strings don't harm my fingers; it holds its tune, the projection is loud, and it is a beautiful uku

    I recently bought the Flight long neck soprano based on its many great reviews. I already had the Enya Concert which I absolutely loved. The Flight was very flat sounding with little volume. After a couple weeks I finally sent the Flight back. I just didn't see myself even playing it. Here in Nevada travel ukuleles make sense with our low humidity. This is a very nice comparison.

    I have two of those you show:
    First: a Flight long-neck soprano (blue one, so also it has the same top, and the same bright sound as your shown soprano) - I like the fretboard/neck profile more than many other ukuleles (it is not D, but "flat", and so it does not cause me thumb problems), and I like the sound. Surprisingly strong for to be such a little instrument. It has now served really well as a beginner instrument for my 17 years old male student. So, it is not too little. :) He plays it always with a strap, so the curved body is no problem either.
    The other one of those you show here is Enya concert size. Mine is orange. My friends in our summer theater gave it a nickname "Undulate" (after the bird) - and it suits well ;) It is so bright by the sound, and makes all happy. The sound is not an ukulele sound, but really nice in itself - I especially like to play ragtime with it. It has been also real fun to play as a trio with those - or the 2 others are Cacha Carbon fibers, which is the same Enya licensed instrument, but made in Poland (I guess?) because in EU it is a bit difficult to get "real" Enyas - so no problems of dynamic or tuning problems between the instruments. The only problem that is happened with it is the bag: the handle did not survive in my speed... All the material of the bag is something soft, so it did not stand as much pulling as it should. So I had to make some kind of "DIY-trick" there. Hopefully they make those parts also better in future.
    But the Kala Watermans can I not stand at all !!! In our library there are some of those for to be rent - they have been cheap to get and they look like an ukulele? I was suggested to get those for one beginner group of adults, who were not yet sure if they want to play ukulele or some other instruments instead of ukuleles. For to get to know what they are like I borrowed one for last summer. It is AWFULL!!! The sound is so plastic, and the playability is bad (in my mind) too. How to get people motivated to play it, if it sounds that??? The only reason why I would buy myself one, is for to be able to show the comparison: Do not buy this, for ex. the Flight is not much more expensive, and it is a real ukulele already. Not a toy. And maybe another reason: It might be nice to be able to explain the "anatomy" of the ukulele for students with it, because it is seen through. For schools or other use where there is needed to clean the instrument between players, I would suggest the Enyas/ Caschas.
    And - I also think your pineapple bambino is cute!

    I played my boyfriend's Waterman for a week on a roadtrip and we regularly take it with us for standup paddling. It's practical but a bit hard to play because the strings are a bit far from the fretboard. Also doesn't hold its tuning very well (although we replaced the strings).
    Currently I am on vacation with a Makala Shark in turquoise - I like ukuleles in fun colors :-) I'm very happy with it and also play it at home sometimes.

    This was a nice comparison video Katie.
    My main travel ukuleles are both Tenors. The Outdoor Carbon Tenor which lives under the driver seat of my car when I am not using it. It is my go to ukulele for hiking, beach trips, camping etc.
    It is very tough and does not need a case. It is strung left handed and low G. I also travel with my Kalena Lefty Tenor.
    It is made out of laminate Sapele so I don't have to be concerned with normal changes in humidity, etc. It is strung reentrant. I also like the cheap Vorson ABS concert ukuleles. Once the strings are replaced they are very nice for the price.
    One tip for people with plastic ukuleles that get real wet is to spray the geared tuners with WD40 when they are dried off.
    The W and D on WD40 stand for
    Water Displacement. It will dispel water from within the gears while lubricating them at the same time. For me I care more about traveling with an ukulele with that I really enjoy playing that I do not need to be too concerned about them trying to get a specific "travel" size or thickness.🙂

    I travel with my Enya concert, but after hearing the review by Got-A-Uke I changed out the strap buttons and tuners to black, then I put black fluorocarbon strings on it and named it Johnny Cash. Last trip I had many people ask me about it. I was playing softly, to myself, in New Orleans airport and a kid handed me $2. How cute was that?

    I love your honest opinions and enthusiasm in your reviews and in your tutorials. I’m a beginner; started in Nov 2021 and already have two UK’s, a concert & a tenor. Bought a used concert UK for travel but don’t like the sound quality (a bit too tinny) and action on strings make it harder to press on the strings. So I I’m looking for a new UK to travel with. Based on the UKES you reviewed im leaning towards the Enya or the Fight plastic UKES, though the journey UK is intriguing., I like the sound, the features, the cool gig bag. My comment about someone wanting a glow in the dark UK is it might be cool camping on a dark night at a camp fire. Thank you for making it fun. 👏🏼❤️😋

    I usually play a tenor uke (large hands) but for travelling I'll take along an el cheapo Makala Dolphin soprano: resin body with a wooden neck and priced at about $50 US, £40 UK, $60CND.
    "Takes a lickin', keeps on tickin'" it doesn't live in a case on camping or RV trips, has slept out in the rain, had beer slopped over it, swatted away bats around a campfire (now there's a tale!).
    The front is covered in stickers and the arched back has been used as a notepad, sketch pad, play list, itinerary (it's white with a light sparkle) - just use the right pen so it can be cleaned!
    Having said that, the tone on the Journey Instruments Sop . . . . mmmm.

    I lead a uke club in Austin. One meeting is a flash beginner class teaching up to 4 chord songs in C. I switched from Malala loaners to Enya Nova U sopranos. They, like some Malala models have a thinner body making it easier to carry 10-12 loaners (I also have some Enya Nova concerts).
    I like that I could sanitize them Enyas. I think they sound better and have better action, playability.
    I noticed a white concert Enya Nova was scratched. Apparently they all start black and the other colors are painted on.
    I was slightly disappointed as I assumed the color of the plastic determined the color. But I am sure the black plastic is consistently more durable than some colors of plastic would be. They would also have to charge more to use different colored plastics. Personally I would pay more for that but most of the market would not respond well to that slight improvement that raised the price.

    I have an enya nova acoustic plus, but since it has electronics I would be scared to take it anywhere with water...I am going to the beach this summer and decided to pick up one of the transparent Waterman's. They are super cute! The sound isn't bad for what it is in my opinion, and I won't be scared to get a little sand on it, which will be inevitable. The only thing that worried me is having it sit for long periods of time in hot temperatures, as I have heard they can have bowing issues, but I figured if I can keep it out of direct sunlight it will be ok!

    Yes, I'm interested in a travel ukulele, important considerations include:
    Good intonation, weather-proof, rattling around in the car-proof, doesn't pull apart or separate where the neck meets the body, frets dont wear off/down in a few months.
    Edited to say not worried about the fret paint wearing off, the actual fret.
    Also I love the gear style tuners.

    I I have a Kala SSTU, solid spruce travel UK (tenor) that I really like the sound of stringed low G. But recently in last few month purchased a Outdoor Instruments (tenor) travel UK. Which is not the cheapest at $175 but it’s well constructed out of carbon/glass fiber polycarbonate that look like it can handle any drops , mishandling or extreme weather temps. Comes in three colors blue, carbon, & a translucent color called moonshine. I have the moonshine but wish I got the blue instead. The moonshine with its translucent color & fluorocarbon strings it makes it hard for me to see the fretboard & strings in lower light conditions. As a novice player I want to be able to see my finger placement. Has larger fret board & wider nut making easier for larger hands. I like the tones & sounds it produces in low G. Have you done a review on this one? Thank you for all your tutorials, I have learned a lot from you & had fun as well

    Where was this video a year ago before I had to buy my own small collection & do my own shootout? =P I too featured the Ohana & Lanikai, but also included the Kala travel (not Waterman) which actually had the nicest finish. Got my curiosity piqued for an Enya concert, does it also have the echo & reverb effects like the Lava?

  • @dominicsedillo1980
    @dominicsedillo1980 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Waterman is a really cool one! I have one and it has a certain chorus effect the way it reverberates (at least on mine). That Kala one is my favorite for sheer travel and not caring who touches it or what happens to it (within reason).
    I bought the first wave of Enya Nova-U Soprano and I DISLIKED it very much! Mine would not (and still does not) stay in tune consistently, it has a weaker sound (compared to the Concert---probably because it lacks the extra sound hole) AND the First Wave didn't come with strap buttons, which the news ones do and I feel kinda gipped honestly. :/

    Mine is the Ovation soprano uke (made in Korea before they moved production to China) and it has a 1-knob preamp that DOESN’T need a battery. Good video nevertheless. 😇. I still own my first soprano uke (Makala) that is unamplified heaven.

    I have a Lava U and it just doesn't hold tune...and very out of tune down the neck, (even just a couple of frets down). Put a capo on and it's crazy out of tune.
    I don't know if there's any way to fix this...???

    • @ericsinchina

    as english isn't my mother tongue, what's the difference between the fluorescent and the glow-in-the-dark waterman? does the fluorescent one not glow in the dark? I'm confused...

    • @OneMusicSchool
      @OneMusicSchool  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, and thanks so much for watching 😀. The fluorescent ukulele is just another way to describe the very bright color. The glow in the dark refers to a specific material that something is made out of that when the material is exposed to light, it takes that energy and can shine or glow like a lamp in the dark. I hope that helps.

    Many elementary music teachers use black light and instruments that glow or are fluorescent for their shows. Maybe that is the reason for that ukulele.

    Can you spray WD-40 on the metal parts to prevent rust or would it ruin it from staying tuned?

    • @OneMusicSchool
      @OneMusicSchool  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm, I'm not sure. WD 40 would definitely lubricate the gears on the tuning pegs, but I don't know if it would "prevent" rusting.

    The Kala Waterman ukes sounds like a cheap kids toy, intonation is bad, and you can't adjust things to fix that.
    Soprano is a good travel size uke.
    The Makala Dolphin/Shark ukes at $30usd are a great cheap affordable travel uke. Left mine outside in a light shower, it filled up with couple mm of water, it survived even though it had a plywood top, wood neck and wood fretboard.
    Have you seen flight ukulele cases?
    I thought neck profile was the thickness and shape of an instrument not nut width.
