    Having a seizure. Talk calm, soft, pet. & don’t hold or restrict movement. When it passes still keep calm & quiet. Could take up to an hour to recover completely. May also be very thirsty, or not thirsty or hungry for many hours & usually wants to sleep after.

    Dogs can still hear and understand you while they are having a seizure, and it is good to talk to them and provide comfort while it’s happening.
    Edit: There are different types of dog seizures and not all are unconscious during the episode. While the brain is misfiring motor function, it does not always impair sensory perception. In fact, it has been shown in studies that comforting your dog during seizures can decrease the length they occur. This information was confirmed by my vet. 🙂

      @BobStoneBoi ปีที่แล้ว +656

      No they can't. Best to stay quiet and calm and dont touch them. Taking and touching will stimulate their nerves and can make the seizure longer. Even after it's over they are often confused and may bite if you pet them. Get a blanket for a pillow and one for any bowel movements it's all you can do.

    I see this and it makes me cry. I had a dog that suffered with this for about 5 years. She passed away last year. I would just hold her and sing to her until it finally passed. Even with her taking the meds this still happened. Lord I miss that dog so much!!!!

    • @Magmon
      @Magmon 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Was wondering about how well the meds work. I never went to a vet with my Mini Fox Terrier. Here is our story....
      He started having seizures when he was about 15, the first 3 were terribly unsettling,..
      Then one day I just picked him up held him close to my chest and took him to a flowing creek right behind my dwelling. I submerged him into the cool flowing water which seemed to bring him out of it sooner. It was summer...as autumn and winter came along it was not an option anymore, so one day by the grace of the holy spirit I mixed some water in a small glass with half a teaspoon or less of bicarb soda, pulled it up in a seringe (20ml) and just squirted it in his mouth that was wide open. Low and behold he came out of it very quickly! I kept doing that and by watching him closely I learners the pr-seizure signs like fidgeting and restlessness. I had a seringe ready to go freshly made every day! When I noticed the signs that one would come on I gave him the full thing. It actually prevented it!!! He calmed down and went to have a rest. He even learners to ask for it! I did this for two years. He only had two in that time as I missed the clues. If I had to work I gave him one in advance. TRUTH
      Bicarb is very alkaline, so I put the seizures down to acidic foods, toxins in the environment. I had to put him to sleep with 17 years due to old age. My discovery has given him better quality of life and he was active to the last day!
      I share this here as seeing this dog and so many stories in the comments tell of much suffering!!
      Don't tell the vet, they might just make a pill of it and charge you the earth! Please just share it with regular people that want to help their pets, It worked for us and it's cheap and harmless.❤

    If this ever happens to you, try not to panic. Often times they can still hear you and are mostly conscious still. If you assure them and comfort them with your presence. It can make the whole event a whole lot less scary for them. Also be sure to keep their head from bumping the ground. Afterwards call or take them to the vet.

      But humans can't hear during their seizures, I have epilepsy but don't hear during my grand mal seizures, which is like what the dog I happening, I don't remember them at all which is normal, I'll just be standing there then feel like I'm being electrocuted for a second then I wake up on a stretcher with people in an ambulance asking me who the president is, stuff like that is usually what happens, people say I was on the ground seizing but I have no memory of it ever, and my doctor says that's normal, because during a seizure there's not much oxygen to the brain so we don't actually know what's going on during a seizure, not conscious

    • @Grace-nt8el
      @Grace-nt8el 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      For generalized seizures the person is completely unaware of what's going on, but the brain is still absorbing stimulus so when we 'come to' our brains have to reboot and it's an incredibly frustrating, stressful, and can even be scary/violent situation. That truly is heart-stopping. My parents used to have a miniature schnauser, who started having seizures. First time it happened, I was frantic. She was up on the couch and just seized and fell to the floor. My heart dropped, and I ran to her, but there's not much you can do but try to comfort them.

      Anyone who has female miniature schnauzers needs to be aware of this. Happened to mine too :( it was such a heart drop picking up her limp body. They come back out of it and walk around like nothing happened but in reality their little heart’s sinus rhythm is on the Fritz and they’re not getting enough oxygen to their brain.

    My sons pup passed from siezures, sweet pup, was deft but a bundle of pure love. My son was 40 at the time, called me crying that morning, said Rue, an Austraulian Sheperd, red and white, had just sezed and died.
    I came to his house right away, poor pup, she bit thru her toung a few places, some blood but she was now at peace .. for ever.
    I was 65 years old at the time, retired city firefighter, saw a lot of bad stuff but this made me cry like a baby. I miss Rue as much as my son does.

      @@ConspirHerSee so for her it’s not like epilepsy with like flashing lights or anything like that. She can cause herself a seizure is she over works herself, especially now she has a heart murmur, or if she gets bumped in the head. I have a 2year old son and he hit her in the head with an object one day and it instantly caused her a seizure but overall She thankfully doesn’t have them all that often. Usually once every couple months but slightly more often when it’s hot.
      She had 3 in one week once and I was very afraid we’d lose her but that was probably a year ago. She was shortly after diagnosed with the very early stages of a heart murmur.
      We recently took her to the vet for dental surgery so they did blood tests and surprisingly she is perfectly healthy for her age.

    My golden retriever started having seizures in 2021. After that, she would have one at least once a month. A year later, it seemed like it was once a week. In mid-December, i believe she had a stroke. Her head tilted, she couldn't walk on her own anymore. Then she passed on December 31st, at 15. The seizures are always so hard to deal with. You never get used to them. I'm just happy she can finally rest.

    I lost my 11 year old Maltese, Jake, about a year ago. He was basically healthy with no history of seizures. It was the middle of the night and I was asleep on the sofa. I woke to the sound of him bumping the floor violently shaking. He had come to me, I’m sure, because he realized something was wrong. It scared me so bad. He wet himself and was violently shaking, head thrown back, just like this poor baby in the video.
    After he seemed to calm down, I wrapped him in a blanket, picked him up and held him close to me. He actually cried (in the way dogs do) for a little while but wasn’t the same after that. I took him to my vet the next morning. He told me the seizure caused brain damage. I had to let Jake go because I could see he was suffering. And I swear, I knew he was scared, kinda in shock. I believe all dogs go to heaven and I’ll see him again one day. It still hurts though and I’m crying just writing this. My Maltipoo Chloe and I sure do miss him. ❤️

      Watched my dog die of heat stroke bc he got out while we were out and couldn’t get back into the back yard to get to his water. Probably should have gone to a mental institute to help with that instead of handling it myself. Now that I’ve gone back to “normal” it’s interesting explaining to people how I can turn off my empathy whenever I want. Idk. Whenever this happens be calm, be collected, be comforting. They’ve lost control of their bodies, but are still aware of everything. You being an island of security in an ocean of terror will bring them back faster. Eventually it will take them, but you can still have many happy healthy years with them. I have a rescue dog who suffers from seizures. Best thing to do is to put your hand under there head on the floor so it doesn't smash onto the hard surface. gently pet them and speak to them calmly. be sure to time the event; anything over 2 minutes you should notify your vet. (assuming your vet already know your dog has them) your dog will most likely be shaky and confused after be sure to comfort them but give them space to breath. some medications can be prescribed to reduce the amount and severity of seizures.

    My girl sought me out to hold her when she would have seizures. Unfortunately she suffered from them on and off the last 10 years of her life. Towards the end, especially during the pandemic she would want me to hold her and my mom to be in her line of sight and us to just softly reassure her it was okay. I miss her like crazy. She was so so special and I hate that these things happen to any living thing but especially creatures that don’t understand what is going on. That kills me.

    My Golden Retriever used to have'em. She'd always come up to me and collapse right at my feet before they'd start. First time scared the crap out of me, and I was a paramedic, too. After that, I'd just comfort her, and keep her from hurting herself.
    As she got older, around age 12, the seizures turned into mini strokes...and when she was 14, she finally had one she didn't recover from. She was an amazing and beautiful dog.

      Hey man, it’s a hard choice to make but sometimes it’s better to go with dignity than be kept alive just to wither away.
