    One of the best ever. I saw Dinosaur jr on the Henry Rollins show and everyone is bald or grey. I can't believe how fast time goes by. It seems like yesterday to me. I turned 40 this year and my son wants to play guitar. I'm glad to be able to show the great music of this era to him. The 90's!

      Hey Ken, your comment’s nearly a decade old now! And we’re nearly a decade older 😅 How’s your boy and that guitar coming along? Are you aware that the 90s/early 00s style, aesthetic, and music has been coming back around into fashion for the “cool”/“artsy” young folks?

    My wife still drags me to Dinosaur Jr. And J. Mascis concerts..
    2 years ago in Newtown in Sydney, I left the Men's toilet and there he was, purple shoes, Grey beard and all.. I ran into the crowd where my wife was watching the support act and I just reefed her from the front row barrier and ran her down towards the men's toilet. Her dream was to meet J Mascis and she was within arms reach of him. He was talking with some of the stage crew.. She could have hugged him, called out his name, tapped in on the shoulder or whatever, but she didn't.. She was just frozen in shock and missed the opportunity.
    I wish I'd done something to get his attention, but it was all so fast and then he vanished behind a curtain..
    The show was awesome. It was just him and his guitar.

      A friend and I saw J standing across the street from CBGB after he played one of the last shows there. He was holding two guitar cases, waiting for a ride I guess. J is not the gregarious, outgoing, conversationalist type, we came to find out.

      Saw J playing an acoustic show at a place called the Met Cafe in Providence RI in the mid 90s. My buddy saw J in the bathroom and had the balls to ask him for an autograph. J happily obliged with a black sharpie "J" on my buddy's hand. Great memory.

    One day in the early 1990's I was driving along on the LA freeways doing my messenger job, and I realized that there was all this cool new music coming out and thought I should get into some of it, so I decided to go buy a cassette of something I heard on the radio that day. The song I heard that struck me was feel The Pain. I put Without A Sound in my car stereo and let it auto-reverse over and over again for weeks, and became a lifelong fan. Henry Rollins says that they don't have a bad album, and he's right. One of the striking things about this song that is so different from modern music is how the tempo changes, it definitely gives it a human feel, definitely not the way everything is locked to a grid and auto-tuned nowadays.

    • @12inchvertical
      @12inchvertical 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Ethan Plante not sure about the leopard print hat and jacket.. sounds pretty sweet. he was in his major label days here and probably felt obliged to spend a tiny fraction of 1% of his income on clothes. I get the feeling J keeps a pretty tight budget for everything other than musical gear. he still lived with his parents when he cut where u been

      It was Letterman. Back then he had a rule about bands, I can't remember how it worked but he wouldn't let whole bands on. When the Pixies played I think it was just Charles and Joey, Kim and the drummer were there but they weren't playing. I think. It's been a while. I think the drummer might have had a tamborine or something. That was from Trompe Le Monde, which came out in 91 or around then.
      It was a weird rule so I wonder if that's why there's no bassist here?

    Not really Dinosaur Jr is it? It's J Mascis and 2 other random blokes! Great song though!

      Yeah, this era is still great and still sounds exactly like Dinosaur Jr. to me. I think it's pretty clear at this point that J is THE creative force behind the band. He writes literally everything. Lou wrote the songs he does lead vocals on, so like, what, eight songs total over their entire career? Two from living all over me and two from each of the three most recent albums. Murph hasn't written anything afaik. Not trying to shit on murph and lou, but let's be real, they are pretty replaceable, lol.
