It takes a special kind of talent to be able to improve on a perfect guitar solo. Those string-skipping arpeggios at the end are unbelievable, and still completely fitting for the song. Great stuff.
I love this video. I’ve been a fan of Phil X only because I heard “Sunny Days” on Drumeo on TH-cam. I never searched it further. I just watched the Drumeo vid whenever I wanted to hear that song. Then, randomly watching a doc on session musicians on Netflix and there is Phil X doing Sunny Days. I’m loving Phil X. Great break into Hotel California.
WoOow! The tone is cra-hay-zee!!! That Roppoli with the P90 is unbelievable. Literally brought a smile to my face without even realizing! Can't wait for this guy's pickups to come out! Now if only I could buy his fingers...
The effect on the Hotel California solo is a Yamaha SPX990 running the stereo delay patch. Delay times are around 275ms and 480ms with the return channels panned hard left and right.
Phil, Your guitar playing is AMAZING. You have the feel, the tone , and the ability. Something special. Not sure how famous you are, but your day will come, along with the BIG money MILLIONS Nice job.
Who were the tools who disliked this vid? Ok it mite not be your kind of music (what's wrong with you??) but credit where credits due, a supertight band and in Philx probably the most underrated guitarist in the business. Love the way he slips some humour into the solos. Think I'll just hang up my axe and watch in awe!:-)
The only thing we have in common Is my name.....This guy deserves greatness......makes me want to play again. ..smiling all the way original one off! :-)
@MikeysBlues24 1. the switch activates the tone control so when i'm singing, i can just hit the sweet spot by flicking instead of turning. 2. Draximus the purple gargoyle
I like the cartoon effect a lot; I feel like I'm watching Waking Life haha. I was there, I didn't think the crowd was that great. Most seemed more interested in drinking than dancing.
@BillyTalentguitar1 Not sure about the first one, but it sounds familiar. If you're talking about that descending lick at 5:43, it is from 'Entrance of the Gladiators' by Julius Fucik.
Everything you are hearing in this video was performed and recorded LIVE with no overdubs or re-recording of parts whatsoever. Yes it was recorded 24 track and mixed at a later date. All of the pro concert DVD's you see are done this way. Actually, a lot of them re-record parts that they screwed up live which makes these performances all that much better, knowing that what you are hearing when you press play is a purely unaltered live performance of what was coming off the stage that night.
@MrTheStrangeOne That's not an SG. It's a Yamaha. He didn't dig a hole in it, he just removed the neck pickup and moved the pickup selector switch down to the lower bout after removing the neck volume and tone pots.
@helptheunderdog they were great, man. you can't hear them because this was a multi-track recording with no audience mics. also.... zombie's is a good word 'cause they're mostly in awe. hahahahaha. i can't believe i just wrote that.
@rockynashfilms ive checked out the trailer. maybe youre right, if you added some onomatopeia text like "whaaam!" or something in funky colors it wouldve been way cooler along with that effect :)
@Gaspeful it´s a yamaha... don´t know the nme cause are 2 ltters and digits.... with a p90... or a px90 which is a p90 that phil design with a calfornia company
@Olpaj Ya its interesting to experiment with on live footage but its best application would be in a scripted music video that was shot on a set with the style in mind, with comic strip style storyboard & text. Check out the movie, "A Scanner Darkly".
A tight 3 piece band, excellent sound. Watching Phil X never gets old. Hey , Phil X ! never get old man !
not only he's a badass guitarist but he also can sing...talented dude.
From The Drills to Hall and Oates, Motley Crue, The Eagles, and back to The Drills? Well Done Sir, Well Done ! ! ! !
My God that hotel California solo just kills me...never heard it played like that before.Damn. intense.
The grand pause in the middle of the Hotel California solo is purely orgasmic.
It's been 10 years. Still sounds great. AWESOME .
The rythm section is just badass!!! Phil is a genius.!
It takes a special kind of talent to be able to improve on a perfect guitar solo. Those string-skipping arpeggios at the end are unbelievable, and still completely fitting for the song. Great stuff.

The effect on the Hotel California solo is a Yamaha SPX990 running the stereo delay patch. Delay times are around 275ms and 480ms with the return channels panned hard left and right.
I'm not a professional. I just listen and watch. I felt at the concert.

@MikeysBlues24 1. the switch activates the tone control so when i'm singing, i can just hit the sweet spot by flicking instead of turning. 2. Draximus the purple gargoyle

The mouth/guitar harmony at 5:00 was a touch of class.
that jam was nuts man, philx is god
Bad Ass, ripped Hotel Cali... Arrrrrgh!!!
It might be like a watercolor effect but it is actually a cartoon effect like the movie "A Scanner Darkly".
@RevolveMusicc Sunny Days is an original by Phil X and The Drills.
Phil has great fills
@Gaspeful its a yamaha sg1820 with neck pickup taken out.. soon to be phil x sig guit

@Bastion71 Exually it is an Yamaha sg also named sbg if I'm not mistaken.
Hey desGsicht thanks for the question He is playing 2 of my Roppoli Heads.
@MrTheStrangeOne That's not an SG. It's a Yamaha. He didn't dig a hole in it, he just removed the neck pickup and moved the pickup selector switch down to the lower bout after removing the neck volume and tone pots.
PHILX!! Where you perfoming next?
@helptheunderdog they were great, man. you can't hear them because this was a multi-track recording with
no audience mics. also.... zombie's is a good word 'cause they're mostly in awe. hahahahaha. i can't believe i just wrote that.
Why thank you and thanks for watching the videos
WHOOOOOOOOO!!!
P-90 he has Phil X signature P-90, if you are interested, go for it on the drills website (:
Kickass!
two questions, though.
why'd he keep the pickup selector if he only has one pickup left?
and, what is that thing in the neck pickup cavity?
@rockynashfilms ive checked out the trailer. maybe youre right, if you added some onomatopeia text like "whaaam!" or something in funky colors it wouldve been way cooler along with that effect :)
I LOVE THESE GUYS! \m/ THEY F***ING RULE! \m/ xD
makes me want to practice more, wish I had more time to.

@Gaspeful
it´s a yamaha... don´t know the nme cause are 2 ltters and digits.... with a p90... or a px90 which is a p90 that phil design with a calfornia company
@philx1111 Ohhh, that's what the one at 3:43 is. I've heard it but I never knew what is was called, now it's stuck in my head haha
If you haven’t worked it out 13 years later it’s man eater by Hall & Oates 😂
wow!! thats alll....oB
Final Cut Pro effects and Red Giant Plug ins
Holy shit.
@Olpaj Ya its interesting to experiment with on live footage but its best application would be in a scripted music video that was shot on a set with the style in mind, with comic strip style storyboard & text. Check out the movie, "A Scanner Darkly".
New bass player? This guy is good but man could that older guy you had rock!
anytime
@emanx101 nope, it's not. the drummer here is paul hoffman.
@philx1111 cool. so, like the configuration of an esquire?
Not my favorite FCP filter, but not the worst you could have chosen :P
i want info abot those amps, where can i get it. i don't know i think roppoli is a friend of phil right? does he sell those amps outside the USA?
I think we motherfucking can't leave this vid :D
@rockynashfilms can't hear them, and when the camera turns they're frozen like icebergs staring at nowhere.
@helptheunderdog No no, they were a good crowd. That town knows how to rock. Lots of hardcore fans too. You just can't hear them much.
right thats it, i NEED a guitar with a px90 in it!!
