How to Paint Emotional Distress Using Color and Directional Brush Strokes in Acrylics

  • Using art to express feelings can be very cathartic. Although we usually avoid painting images with strong negative emotions, science shows that releasing negative feelings on canvas can be helpful and have a positive effect on lifting our mood.
In this Van Gogh-style painting, we have a crashing ocean wave encroaching on the shore, with a man sitting out on a patio who's about to be overwhelmed by sudden doom, yet he calmly sits there awaiting his fate. This painting will tell a different story to each viewer, from negative feelings about global warming to a subconscious feeling of impending disaster.
While not a great subject for a Christmas card, this painting will be a conversation starter to those who dare to paint it.

Ginger, this is the type of painting I usually stand in front of at a museum for the longest time, soaking in the emotions the artist is conveying. Yours is very emotional and thought provoking. I am in love with your little field mouse, he is just adorable, can’t wait to see him posted. I’ve been really enjoying seeing all your recent paintings you have been doing, especially the color schemes and the backgrounds, the palette knife work is great too, gives the paintings new dimensions to it. As always, thank you and Jon and your stuffy staff for all the great work you do for us.💗💗💗

Wow Ginger! Thank you for painting this. No unsub here… I love it! It’s recording the times and emotions of our surroundings at this time… Isn’t that what some art is about & for?? History.
Recordings to change our thinking of the harder times… And seeing a future in a better place.
I love how you see and paint the under layers of color as you paint.

See? I didn’t view this as negative, but rather a reminder that not everyone lives in a happy place all the time. I saw a man who is all alone and is going through some very difficult things in life, but is staying calm on the outside even though life is raging with pain.
I saw it as positive because we all go through events, and also a reminder to love all even in those times.

I enjoyed watching you paint this, I love watching you paint everything but I really miss your ODG paintings you used to do. Seems it is a lot of AI and pallet knife paintings, but I get that is what the younger crowd is in to right now. I do love what is coming up for red members. We have a lot of the Old master works for our red and purple members on the website. Lots of our wave and water are ODGs too. We just do not get many views for these on TH-cam as people percieve them to be too difficult. Also I have done most of the "easy ones " I could find. but as a red member you can sure pick an ODG on your own and send it in for help and personal art coaching. www.paintingwithginger.com and here is where you find listings for the ODGs. www.acrylicpaintingwithgingercook.com/old-masters-odg-subcategory-list/

Each half could be painted on seperate canvases and displayed together.

Andrew Solomon once said "half the purpose of art is to describe such iconic states." He further said Emily Dickinson was able to convey it in language and Francisco Goya in his Black Paintings where he illustrated his empty outlook on mortals. Art in any form would be useless if it didn't speak to anyone. You are a Master Artist Ginger! You have touched so many subjects in life from joy to sadness! Your Art has given me a voice!
